Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although "Lumpy Gravy" was mostly instrumental, several important Zappa songs (some had not yet been released!) are played here without lyrics. Which song was NOT played on "Lumpy Gravy"?

Answer: How Could I Be Such a Fool?

"Take Your Clothes Off" ends the record. "Oh No" occurs in several different places. "King Kong" would turn out to be one of Zappa's most recorded songs.
2. The album opens with someone saying, "The way I see it ________."

Answer: Barry

Barry is Barry Imhoff, partner with Howie [Solomon] who owned the Cafe au Go Go/Garrick Theatre N.Y. in 1967. It was typical of Zappa to use these short 14 syllables as a preamble to the happy, jumpy music which follows.
3. Motorhead's girlfriend "tore up the engine, and the trans, and her and a girlfriend they get in there and booze it up and tear up the seats. Just ripped the seats completely out." What kind of car was it?

Answer: '56 Olds

"... After the Olds, he got another pickup." Motorhead's monologue is fascinating in and of itself. Afficianados of 50's muscle cars will surely get a huge kick out of it. Zappa accompanies the rap with interesting musique concrète, which gradually gets louder.
4. One of the major "themes" of Lumpy Gravy is:

Answer: Pigs and Ponies

This alliterative phrase is discussed in full on this album. The humans inside the piano seem terrified of these animals, and their conversations about them gradually become more and more weird and intense.
5. Spider says: "Everything in the universe is made of one element." What is it?

Answer: A single note

"Atoms are really vibrations, you know, which are extensions of THE BIG NOTE, everything's one note. Everything, even the ponies. The note, however, is the ultimate power, but see, the pigs don't know that, the ponies don't know that. Right?" If you answered with "Stupidity" don't feel bad. You were close. Zappa once famously said, "The most abundant element in the universe is not Hydrogen; it's Stupidity." But he didn't say it on this album.
6. Louie the Turkey is explaining how he was attacked and had to "fight back" and do what?

Answer: Pick up sticks

"I fought so back, hard back." Louie the Turkey is one of the reasons people get so enamoured of this disc. His inadvertant wordplay is usually hilarious. Zappa used his crazy ramblings throughout the entire album, creating a Dada-like atmosphere at every turn.
7. On the cover of the Lumpy Gravy album, Frank wears a t-shirt that says:

Answer: Pipco

Zappa later re-produced the shirt as swag for the fans. PIPCO is a heat & air conditioning company in Baltimore, still in existence!
8. Although the CD eventually divided the music into sub-indexes, originally there were only TWO tracks listed for the entire album. They were:

Answer: Side One and Side Two

Although the CD was released after Zappa's death, he had previously given the sub-index titles. But until the CD was released in the 80's, these simple track titles were all the nomenclature Zappa provided.
9. What does Zappa call all the studio orchestral musicians on this album?

Answer: The Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra & Chorus

One of Frank's great talents was for making up interesting and unique names for things. He would use this same name several more times when he was involved with similar pick-up orchestras.
10. Zappa used this album as a basis for creating his final masterpiece before he passed away. Twenty-five years after "Lumpy Gravy" Frank released:

Answer: Civilization Phaze III

In interviews, Frank often declared that "Lumpy Gravy" was his favorite album. It is not surprising, therefore, to find that he used it as the basis for his last project before he passed away: "Civilization Phaze III" -- Zappa's final undisputed masterpiece. Most of the spoken-word sections of "Lumpy Gravy" are interwoven with new "piano-people" and the Synclavier.
