Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was Adolf Hitler born?

Answer: 20 April 1889

Adolf Hitler was born at 6:30 p.m. on the evening of 20 April 1889 in Branau am Inn, Upper Austria, across the border from German Bavaria.
2. Hitler never knew who his grandfather was (paternal).

Answer: True

His paternal grandmother was Maria Anna Schicklgruber, but the identity of his grandfather was never known for sure (she was the mother of Alois Hitler, Adolf's father). It was suspected he was someone from the neighborhood or possibly a poor millworker named Johann Georg Hiedler.

There was also some speculation that Maria was impregnated by the 19-year-old son of the Jewish family she worked for, Frankenberger. However, Hitler never knew who his grandfather was.
3. What was the last name of Adolf's father, Alois, before he changed it to Hitler?

Answer: Schicklgruber

Alois Schicklgruber always used his mother's last name because he was not ashamed of being illegitimate in rural Austria. After he became successful in the civil service, his uncle encouraged him to change his name and continue the family name, Hiedler. This came to be misspelled as Hitler. (In the local dialect both spellings would have given the same pronunciation).
4. What was Hitler's nickname as a baby?

Answer: Adi

Hitler was called Adi as a baby by his mother. She had previously lost children at birth and lavished a lot of affection on little Hitler. They had a very close relationship.
5. How many siblings did Hitler have, not including those who died at birth?

Answer: four

Hitler had an older half brother named Alois Junior, an older half sister Angela, a little brother Edmund, and a little sister Paula. Alois Jr. ran away from home at age thirteen and Edmund died at age six.
6. What event allowed Hitler to drop out of high school?

Answer: his father died

Alois Hitler died at age 65 on January 3, 1903 in the town on Leonding, Austria. He died of a sudden lung hemorrhage when Hitler was only thirteen years old.
7. How old was Adolf when he dropped out of high school?

Hitler dropped out of high school and spent the next couple years deciding what to do with his life. He had no desire to get a job because he hated the idea of anyone having authority over him.
8. Who was his close childhood friend?

Answer: August Kubizek

August Kubizek wanted to be a musician and he and Hitler used to attend operas together. Hitler often gave long, dramatic speeches to his friend. Kubizek later described his childhood friend as "violent and highly strung."
9. What did his mother die of in 1907?

Answer: breast cancer

Klara Hitler died in 1907 at the age of 46 from malignant breast cancer. Adolf was 18-years-old at the time and was devastated by the loss of his mother. Klara was operated on and had a breast removed, but it was too late. Interestingly, the doctor who examined her was a Jewish man by the name of Eduard Bloch.
10. In what town was Adolf Hitler born?

Answer: Braunau am Inn

He was born in the small Austrian town of Braunau am Inn, although he would spend much of his childhood moving to new towns because of his father's work as a custom's official.
11. What was his mother's name before she got married?

Answer: Klara Pölzl

12. What career did Hitler briefly consider when he was a kid?

Answer: priest

Hitler attended school at a Catholic Benedictine monastery in Lambach that was covered in swastikas. He sang in the boy's choir and so admired the priests that he briefly considered being one.
13. Was Hitler ever homeless?

Answer: Yes

After his mother died, Hitler moved to Vienna in an attempt to train as an artist. The 18-year-old spent some time being homeless after he abruptly left the apartment he was sharing with his childhood friend, August Kubizek.
14. What was the name of his brother who died of measles at age six?

Answer: Edmund

Little brother Edmund died at the age of six from measles.
15. Reinhold Hanisch had what relationship with Adolf Hitler?

Answer: Agent to sell paintings

Reinhold Hanisch met Hitler at a home for poor men and became his agent, selling pictures that Adolf would copy from postcards of famous Vienna landmarks. Hitler later accused Hanisch of stealing his property and testified in court, getting Hanisch an 8 day sentence in jail. Hanisch was murdered in 1938 as an order from Hitler for talking about him to the press.
