10. You really wouldn't want to incur the wrath of this particular Khan. Born in the 12th century, he founded the Mongol Empire, and had several descendants who continued the conquest of Central Asia, including his son Ögedei Khan and his grandson Kublai Khan. His birth name was Temujin, but by which name is he better known?

Answer: Genghis Khan

In this instance, 'Khan' is a title rather than a surname; Genghis Khan was a Khagan, or Great Khan, on the level of an emperor. The Mongol Empire encompassed Siberia, the Caucasus Region and China, spreading as far as Iran, Iraq, Ukraine and India; after Khan's death, Mongol troops even attacked Poland and Korea. It is estimated that up to 40 million people were killed as a result of Khan's conquests. Khan himself has become a legendary figure, of whom very few, if any, accurate portraits exist.

Genghis Khan died in 1227, the cause of his death unknown; pneumonia and falling off his horse are but two of the possible causes suggested. He was succeeded by his third son, Ögedei Khan, in 1229.
