Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nohah and Noah are two names that look remarkably similar, but are two different people. According to 1 Chronicles 8:2, Nohah was a son of Benjamin and a grandson of Jacob and Rachel. Who was Noah?

Answer: The builder of the ark

I thought I would start with an easy one. Obviously, Noah was the builder of a gigantic ark in which he and his family took refuge when an enormous flood engulfed the entire world. Joining Noah on the ark was his unnamed wife and their three sons -- Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The unnamed wives of Noah's three sons also took refuge on the ark.

According to Scripture, the ark also accommodated a male and a female of every kind of animal and bird.

Details about Noah building the ark and the enormous flood engulfing the world can be found in Chapters 6, 7 and 8 of Genesis.
2. Two names easy to mix up are Eliadah and Eliada. Eliadah was the father of Rezon, an adversary God raised up against Solomon, according to 1 Kings 11:23. Two Bible characters are called Eliada, but one, according to 2 Chronicles 17:17, was perhaps more noteworthy than the other. Out of the four options below, what one describes Eliada?

Answer: A mighty Benjamite warrior

Eliada was a mighty Benjamite warrior in the days of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah. 2 Chronicles 17:17 describes Eliada as "a mighty man of valor" and with him were two hundred thousand men armed with bow and shield. However, little is known about him as he is mentioned only once in Scripture.

A second person known as Eliada was a son of David, as per 1 Chronicles 3:8 and 2 Samuel 5:16, However, in 1 Chronicles 14:7, he is known as Beeliada. No details are given about David's son and who his mother was. The name simply appears in a list of names of sons of the king of Israel.
3. Two Old Testament names remarkably similar are Eder and Eber. According to 1 Chronicles 24:30, Eder was a son of Mushi and a Levite. Who was Eber, as per Luke 3:35?

Answer: A name that appears in the genealogy of Jesus Christ

Eber is featured in the genealogy of Jesus Christ, as per Luke 3:35. In other words, Eber was a great-grandson of Noah's son Shem and the father of Peleg. The genealogy runs from Luke 3:23-38. Eber's name is also found in various places in the Old Testament, including Genesis 11:15-17 and 1 Chronicles 1:18-19.

Some other minor characters in the Old Testament are also called Eber, as per 1 Chronicles 8:12 and Nehemiah 12:20.
4. Bethul and Bethuel are two names easy to mix up as they are remarkably similar. Bethul was a descendant of Simeon and is mentioned once in Joshua 19:4. Who was Bethuel?

Answer: The father of Rebekah

Betheul was the father of Rebekah, as per Genesis 22:23. The same verse states he was the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother.

Scripture tells of Isaac, the son of Abraham and Sarah, taking Rebekah as his wife. Isaac and Rebekah would become the parents of the first set of documented twins in Scripture -- Jacob and Esau.
5. Josiah and Joshibiah are two more names that are similar. Joshibiah was a minor character who was a descendant of Simeon as per 2 Chronicles 4:35. Who was Josiah?

Answer: A king of Judah

Josiah was a king of Judah, ascending to the throne when he was only eight years old. He was the grandson of Manasseh, a brutal and wicked king, but Josiah is regarded as a king who did right in the eyes of the LORD. Scripture tells of Josiah taking decisive action to ensure true worship was practised in the land.

For details about Josiah's reign, see 2 Kings 22 and 23.
6. Two Old Testament names quite similar are Jedidiah and Jedaiah. 1 Chronicles 24 states Jedaiah was a priest in the days of King David. Who was Jedidiah, as per 2 Samuel 12:25?

Answer: Another name for Solomon

According to 2 Samuel 12:25, Solomon was to be called Jedidiah. The verse in the NKJV states, "....and because the LORD loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah." For whatever reason, the name Jedidiah didn't stick.

Meanwhile, Jedaiah was a priest of Israel during the reign of King David, the father of Solomon. Scripture states Jedaiah led the second of the twenty-four priestly divisions.

A second man called Jedaiah served as a priest in the days of Ezra and Nehemiah.
7. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had an army commander named Nebuzaradan.

Answer: True

Nebuchadnezzar is a well known king in the Old Testament but perhaps not so well known is the fact he had an army commander who had a similar name --Nebuzaradan.

2 Kings 25 and Jeremiah 39 tell of Nebuzaradan carrying away Jewish captives to Babylon after the capture of Jerusalem.
8. Ziph and Zuph are easy to mix up, although Ziph is not the name of a person. Instead, it is the name of a community in Judah, as per Genesis 15:24. Who, according to 1 Samuel 1:1, was Zuph?

Answer: An ancestor of Elkaneh, husband of Hannah

Zuph was an ancestor of Elkaneh, the husband of Hannah. Elkaneh became the father of Samuel after his once barren wife was miraculously able to conceive.

1 Samuel 1:1 states Elkanah was the son of Jeroham, who was the son of Elihu, who was the son of Tohu, who was the son of Zuph.
9. In today's English, Nathan and Nathanael would be seen as the same name with Nathan simply being a shortform of the latter. However, Nathan and Nathanael are two different individuals in Scripture, with one from the Old Testament and the other from the New Testament. Nathan was a prophet who rebuked David when he had an adulterous affair with Bathsheba and orchestrated the murder of her husband Uriah. Who was Nathanael?

Answer: One of the original twelve disciples

Nathanael was one of the original Twelve Disciples, with his name appearing in the Gospel of John. However, in the three other Gospels and in Acts, he is known as Bartholomew.

Among the disciples, Nathanael is often perceived as one of the quiet ones. This even though he was the first disciple to make the declaration that Jesus was the Son of God. Nathanael's famous declaration is found in John 1:49 and he made it months, possibly years before Peter.
10. Let's end our quiz with Saul and Paul, two names that not only sound alike but were both shared by a New Testament evangelist from Tarsus. Two men in the Old Testament were also called Saul. The first Saul was a king of Edom, as per Genesis 36:37. Who is the second Saul in the Old Testament?

Answer: The first king of Israel

Saul, the son of Kish, was the first king of Israel. Previously, Israel had been ruled by judges, with Samuel being the last judge before the coronation of Saul.

According to 1 Samuel 9:2, Saul was "choice and handsome". However, his reign was turbulent, with much of his energy devoted to attempting to kill David simply because of a severe case of jealousy. Scripture states Saul committed suicide after being seriously injured in battle.

According to Genesis 36:37, Saul, king of Edom, replaced Samlah after he died. When Saul died, Achbor reigned in his place.
