Connie Mack named the team Athletics after the Philadelphia team in the old National Association which played in the 1870s. He got to name the team because he was to be the first manager. Connie Mack was the Athletics manager for 50 years. He, along with Ben Shibe owned a part of the team.
2. When was the very first Philadelphia Athletics game played?

Answer: April 26, 1901

This game was played on April 26, 1901 after the first two games were rained out. This game was played at Columbia Park. The Athletics finished the 1901 season with a 74-62 record. The Athletics stayed at Columbia Park untill the end of the 1908 season.
3. Who did the Athletics play in their very first game in Philadelphia?

Answer: Washington Senators

The Senators won the game 5-1. The Senators unded up finishing in sixth place in 1901, while the Athletics finished fourth. The attendance for this game was 16,000.
4. When did the Athletics win their very first pennant?

Answer: 1902

The Athletics won the American League Pennant in 1902, but there was no World Series that year. The World Series has been played in 1901, and from 1903 onward. The Pittsburgh Pirates won the 1902 National League Pennant.
5. When was Shibe Park opened?

Answer: 1909

Shibe Park was the first modern ballpark, it was for baseball only. In 1953, the name was changed to Connie Mack Stadium. After the 1954 season, the Athletics were moved to Kansas City by Arnold Johnson.
