Dundee Hibs were formed by Pat Reilly, an Irishman, who wanted to create a club with Irish roots in Dundee. He formed Dundee Hibs in 1909, changing their name to Dundee United in 1923. Dundee United were voted into the Scottish League just one year after their formation.

Craig Brewster was a great hit at United in his time, but moved on to Greece to ply his trade, where he became a hero. The full time score was 1-0 to United against a very strong Rangers outfit, giving them their 1st Scottish Cup triumph in their 7th attempt. United were runners up in 1974, 1981, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1991.

United lost to Gothenburg in the final after defeating some very good opposition, including Barcelona home and away. It wasnt to be however as an away goal from Nillson of Gothenburg spoiled United's hopes of winning the competition. Gothenburg won the game in Sweden 1-0, with a 1-1 draw at Tannadice. In the 1983/84 season United reached the Semi Final of the European Cup.

Possibly the most skillful player to grace the Scottish game in years scored the only headed goal of his career for Rangers against United to clinch the league title for Rangers in the 1996/97 season. In this season United finished 3rd behind the Old Firm.

United are known as The Terrors. The club's supporters are known as The Arabs due to the fact they had to play on a pitch pretty much made of sand during a European fixture. The pitch was frozen and so they put sand on it to make it playable, therefore giving them their nickname, The Arabs.
