A preliminary round in round-robin format was played at the London Olympics for the first time. Results were used to determine seeding for the knockout round. The two matches leading to the disqualifications involved four pairs that had already qualified for the knockout, and the players wanted to lose to get an easier matchup in the knockout round.

The scandal prompted the BWF to change the tournament rules to prevent players from anticipating their opponents in the knockout round.
