Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scotland finished second behind the Czech Republic in their qualifying group for the 2000 UEFA European Championship. They then faced a two-legged play-off against which team?

Answer: England

Scotland lost the first leg 2-0, which was the first game played between the two nations at the newly rebuilt Hampden Stadium in Glasgow. Scotland went on to win the second leg 1-0, in the last game played between the two nations at the old Wembley Stadium before it was rebuilt.
2. Scotland finished third in their qualifying round for the 2002 FIFA World Cup behind Croatia and Belgium. They would have finished second had they won their home game against Croatia, however they had a late goal disallowed for the goalscorer being offside. Which player 'scored' that goal?

Answer: Billy Dodds

In the days before VAR Scotland had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside, which would have dramatically changed the final group standings. On a personal note, this was the first Scotland game I attended, and I was behind the goal where the 'goal' happened.
3. Scotland finished second in their qualifying group for the 2004 UEFA European Championship, behind Germany, and once again faced a play-off, where they would this time meet the Netherlands. Despite winning the home leg 1-0, they were eliminated after losing the second leg. What was the score in the second leg?

Answer: 6-0

In fairness, the Netherlands were always favourites to win the tie, but when Scotland won the first leg optimism was high. The second leg in Amsterdam is best forgotten. Ruud Van Nistelrooy scored a hat-trick during what can only be called a rout.

This particular qualifying campaign is also remembered by Scotland fans for the 2-2 draw away to part-timers the Faroe Islands, which saw Scotland 2-0 down after only 12 minutes. Perhaps more remarkably, during this time, Scotland were being managed by Berti Vogts who had won the UEFA European Championship in 1996 as manager of Germany.

As an aside, the Netherlands manager was Dick Advocaat who had managed Rangers in Scotland from 1998-2001, so he knew Scottish football. He would later go on to win the 2008 UEFA Cup final with Zenit St Petersburg, against Rangers.
4. Scotland finished third in their qualifying group for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, despite losing only three games. Which of the following teams did NOT beat Scotland during this campaign?

Answer: Slovenia

After taking just two points from their opening three games, Berti Vogts resigned as Scotland manager. He was eventually replaced by Walter Smith, who had previously led Rangers to nine successive league titles in Scotland. Although we finished third in the qualifying group, Scotland's performances improved dramatically, including a 1-1 home draw against Italy, who would go on to win the World Cup.
5. Scotland finished third in their qualifying group for the 2008 UEFA European Championship, behind Italy and France who were both finalists in the FIFA World Cup two years earlier. Which team, who were quarter-finalists in that tournament, were also in the qualifying group?

Answer: Ukraine

The draw for the 2008 European Championship took place on 27 January 2006, before the World Cup, which was played in June/July. Scotland could argue they were unlucky to be drawn in a group with the two finalists from the World Cup, as well as a losing quarter-finalist.

There were many positives, however, including two 1-0 victories at home and away to France, and a 1-1 home draw at home to World Champions Italy.
6. Scotland finished third in their qualifying group for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Which team topped their group?

Answer: Netherlands

By this time it was starting to become a trend that Scotland were facing tournament finalists. The Netherlands would go on to reach the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup where they lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time. Norway finished second in the group, while Macedonia finished in fourth and Iceland fifth.
7. Scotland finished third in their qualifying group for the 2012 UEFA European Championship behind Spain and the Czech Republic. The campaign will forever be remembered by Scotland fans for the 4-6-0 formation adopted for our away game against Czech Republic. Who was the Scotland manager who opted for this formation?

Answer: Craig Levein

Scotland had defeated the Czech Republic 1-0 in a friendly match in March 2010 so had every reason to believe they could get a result against them in the qualifying campaign. Enter manager Craig Levein, who took inspiration from Barcelona who had adopted a 4-6-0 formation and played without any recognised strikers. Unfortunately, Scotland were not as good as Barcelona and they lost the game 1-0. Spain would later go on to win the European Championship, their third major championship in a row, after the 2008 European Championship and 2010 World Cup.

The one glimmer of hope for Scotland was their home game against against Spain. Trailing 2-0, they came back and levelled the score at 2-2. They ultimately lost 3-2.
8. Scotland finished fourth in their qualifying group for the 2014 FIFA World cup. Which team did NOT finish above Scotland in this group?

Answer: Wales

The least said about this campaign the better. Belgium topped the group and would go on to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup. It was the start of a good run in tournament football for what was dubbed their 'golden generation', which included players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku.
9. Scotland finished fourth in their qualifying group for the 2016 UEFA European Championship, behind Germany, Poland and Republic of Ireland. Which team, making their debut in a qualifying campaign, were also in this group?

Answer: Gibraltar

The 2016 European Championship saw the total number of qualified teams increase from 16 to 24 for the first time, meaning the top two teams in each group qualified, with the third place teams entering into a play-off round. Scotland lost only three games, twice to group winners (and 2014 World Cup winners) Germany, and away to Georgia.

Unfortunately, they drew four games and because of this they finished fourth in the group. To add insult to injury, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would all go on to qualify for the tournament, meaning Scotland were the only 'home nation' not involved.
10. Scotland finished third in their qualifying group for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, behind England and Slovakia. Although England managed to go through the campaign undefeated, Scotland came within seconds of a win before Harry Kane salvaged a 2-2 draw. Which Scotland player scored two free kicks in three minutes to put Scotland 2-1 ahead?

Answer: Leigh Griffiths

Of the nine qualifying groups, eight runners-up progressed to the play-off round. Once matches against the group winners were disregarded, Slovakia were the ninth placed team, meaning they didn't make the play-offs. They had only beaten Scotland to second place on goal difference, and had Scotland finished second in the group they would have been the second ranked team of all runners-up, ahead of Italy, Denmark, Croatia and Sweden.
