Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Speedway has always been a popular motorsport in Britain, ever since its beginnings many years ago. But do you know in which year the first ever speedway meeting was held in Britain?

Answer: 1928

High Beech raceway held a meeting in February of that year but the first race to resemble modern speedway was on March 3rd, 1928. The meeting was held at Audenshaw in Manchester.
2. The bikes that are raced today have changed very little since the start of speedway. They differ greatly from normal motorbikes in two fundamental ways. Which two parts are missing from a speedway bike?

Answer: Brakes and Gears

Yes, no brakes and no gears and 70mph sideways round corners ... that's why I love the sport so much. A rider uses his clutch to slow down and control the bike. A silencer is a mandatory piece on a bike and it is illegal to ride without one.
3. All speedway bikes have to conform to the governing body's, the FIM, rules. What engine size must all speedway bikes have?

Answer: 500cc

Although the mechanics, quality of parts and daringness of the rider, make the bike's speeds vary quite differently.
4. There were a select few pioneering riders who got speedway off the ground, touring the regions and entertaining the ever-swelling crowds. Which of these names was not one of these original speedway riders?

Answer: Racer Harris

Some of the other names, some sounding more like boxers than speedway riders, were Bronco Bianchi, Cyclone Smith, Hurricane Hampson and Sprouts Elder. Sprouts is one of the most famous of these originals along with Cyril Taft.
5. Speedway soon caught on and a league was established in 1929. Which of these Midlands cities did not have a team in this first league?

Answer: Wolverhampton

Wolves didn't ride in the league until 1951. Leicester finished 5th, Coventry 3rd and Birmingham 9th in the inaugural league.
6. The original season of speedway in 1929 had a northern and a southern league. Leeds were the winners of the northern league title but which team won the southern title?

Answer: Stamford Bridge

Their riders included Wat Phillips, Ernie Maine, Nick Nicol, Bert Bolt and Billy Bragg (no, not the singer).
7. The record crowd for a speedway meeting in Britain was for the 1938 World Final Championships held at Wembley. What was the crowd for this meeting?

Answer: 93,000

The attendance figures were often inflated by the promoters and so some figures are unreliable. But the Speedway News was the definitive paper for speedway then and reported accurate figures for world finals.
8. There are many famous names throughout the years. I will give you 4 of these names and you tell me the club that they all rode for. Cyril Maidment, Ove Fundin, Soren Sjosten and Ivan Mauger.

Answer: Belle Vue

Some of Belle Vue's more other famous riders include world champion, Peter Craven, world champion Peter Collins and Chris Morton (who incidentally, owned an off-licence at the end of our street.)
9. Speedway in Scotland thrived in the beginning with many races being held there. The first race being held at Celtic Park (yes the football ground). Which of these teams was NOT a real Scottish side?

Answer: Coatbridge Coyotes

The winner of that first ever event at Celtic Park was Drew McQueen in 1929. He won £100 in prize money.
10. There have been many pairings of brothers throughout the years. Which of these riders are not actually brothers?

Answer: Charlie and Alf Parker

Speedway is a very nepotistic sport and so generations continue in speFather Phil Crump and son Jason and Ales Dryml snr. and sons Ales jnr. and Lukas.
