quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who developed a motorcycle/pyrotechnic stunt team called "The League of Mental Men" with a dog and a half-blind guy?

Answer: Nick

From the episode "Breakable". Unfortunately, both Nick (Kris Marshall) and an innocent cow bystander were injured during the performance. "The crowd loved it!" Nick grinningly reports from hospital.

Kris Marshall's acting resume includes Colin Frissell in 2003's "Love Actually", the T.V. series "Murder City" (2004-2006), and "Sold".
2. Who, while spicing up his relationship with his girlfriend, swallows the key to the handcuffs?

Answer: Jeff

In "The Freckle, the Key and the Couple Who Weren't", Jeff (Richard Coyle) forgets he's dressed in a very bizarre black leather mask and shows up at the pub to question Steve about his problem. When he remembers how he's dressed, Jeff realizes why the chemist gave him a free bag of laxatives.

In addition to "Coupling", Richard Coyle has appeared in "Cracker", "The Libertine" (movie), and as Mr. Coxe in "Wives and Daughters" on "Masterpiece Theatre".
3. Who had strange convulsions whenever he heard the voice of a certain female broadcaster?

Answer: Kramer

The voice of broadcaster Mary Hart was not a good thing for poor Kramer (Michael Richards), but it was an hilarious episode ("Good Samaritan") and it's easy to see Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) and Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) barely keeping straight faces in one scene in which 'The K Man' gets particularly fitful!
4. Who accidently saw his girlfriend's roommate nude, causing some discomfort and friction?

Answer: Kramer

From the episode "The Truth". While dating Elaine's roommate, Tina (Siobhan Fallon), Kramer sees Elaine as she comes out of the shower.

A very similar situation happened on "Coupling", but between Steve (Jack Davenport) and Sally (Kate Isitt).
5. "Holy water is very expensive! It contains the urine of seven virgins!" "It's just tap water." "I asked you to do ONE thing!" Which two characters had this conversation?

Answer: Nick and Michael

In "Ghosts", Nick, now carrying a business card that says 'exorcist' on one side and 'male swimsuit model' on the other, enlists the help of his younger brother, Michael (Gabriel Thomson), to exorcise the Harper home of evil spirits. Their dad, Ben (Robert Lindsay), who unwillingly (and by surprise) is 'exorcised', is decidedly NOT happy about it (but then, he's not happy about lots of things...). One of the funniest scenes from any sitcom, ever (in my opinion).

Robert Lindsay is a veteran actor who's won many awards, including BAFTAs and a Tony. Most Americans will recognize him as Captain/Admiral Pellew in the Horatio Hornblower movie series originally aired on A&E.
6. Whose apartment had an 'owl infestation'?

Answer: Nick

In "The Great Escape", Nick has moved into a tiny, squalid apartment. When Ben visits to avoid his visiting mother-in-law, he hides in the bathroom to avoid seeing his wife Susan (Zoe Wanamaker). The stench is so bad, he keeps making pitiful noises that Nick explains by telling Susan "I've got owls" and later tells his grandmother (Rosemary Leach) it's an owl infestation.
7. Who had imaginary 'friends' called 'Captain Subtext' and 'Melty Man' to help explain certain situations?

Answer: Jeff

Jeff lacks nothing in the imagination department explaining touchy social situations to his mates. Women are quite another thing. He often blurts out women's bodies parts or says he collects women's ears in jars when faced with trying to chat up a beautiful woman.

"Coupling" aired on the BBC from 2000-2004. NBC tried its own version of the series, but it mercifully disappeared after one or two episodes.
8. Who would rather celebrate 'Festivus' than Christmas?

Answer: None of these

This was actually George's (Jason Alexander) dad, Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller). Festivus festivities featured a metal pole and included 'The Airing of Grievances' and 'Feats of Strength'. "Festivus for the Rest of Us!"

"Festivus" originated from the writer of the episode "The Strike","Dan O'Keefe" who, according to Wikipedia, celebrated this holiday in February 1966 with his wife to celebrate their first date. According to Frank Costanza, "Festivus" is celebrated December 23. There are books available all about the holiday.
9. What two friends get a rare opportunity to watch major surgery and later wonder if they're the catalyst of a miracle cure?

Answer: Kramer and Jerry

In the episode of the same name, "The Junior Mint" ("They're very refreshing!") accidently gets tossed into the insides of Elaine's boyfriend, whose original prognosis isn't so good. To his doctor's amazement, he makes a complete recovery.

And they call it "a show about nothing"! "Seinfeld" aired from 1989 to 1998.
10. Who gets held in the El Al terminal after running after a girl he liked yelling the Hebrew word for "breasts"?

Answer: Jeff

From "The Girl With Two Breasts". Poor Jeff. We never know her real name, but she thinks that's what Jeff means when he points to his chest and says "Jeff" (she speaks no English). Once he thinks he's learned her name, he shares it, loudly, with Steve in the crowded pub.
11. Who, with help, dug up a parrot in a pet cemetery after dark?

Answer: Kramer and Jerry

From the episode "The Strong Box". The parrot had swallowed Kramer's lock box key after he'd hidden it in the bird's food dish. The grieving parrot's owners catch them in the act.

Oliver (Richard Mylan) replaced Jeff's character in the final "Coupling" series. Abi (Siobhan Hayes) was Ben's cousin's daughter who moved in with the Harpers after their daughter, Janey (Daniela Denby-Ashe) left for university.
12. Who got the role of the adult Jesus in a Christmas play?

Answer: Nick

Nick got the part after agreeing to take his mom, Susan, to the auditions. Susan's thespian hopes are dashed when she only receives the part of 'shepherd number two' (which, to the director's annoyance, she continuously tries to 'beef up'). From "The Second Greatest Story Ever Told".

Zoe Wanamaker ("Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone") is the daughter of actor Sam Wanamaker ("The Two Mrs. Grenvilles", "Private Benjamin") who was instrumental in the rebuilding of The Globe Theatre in London.
13. "The Prickles, the Blurts and the Head Laugh." Who uses this to explain signs that people are dealing with an awkward situation?

Answer: Jeff

From "Her Best Friend's Bottom". Jeff has an answer for everything, usually hilarious ones!

Jeff's character left "Coupling" at the end of the third series, but the character (not the actor) paid a visit in series four, after he'd had a sex change while visiting the Isle of Lesbos.
14. Who held various jobs as a taxi driver, wrap artist (artistically wrapping everything, including his family), male stripper and professional mourner?

Answer: Nick

Nick, a loveable layabout, tried many jobs including gorilla grams, cross-dressing, handware store clerk, Christmas tree seller and a grocery store clerk, which culminated in Ben being arrested for shoplifting (by Nick).

"My Family" is a highly popular British sitcom that first aired in 2000. Kris Marshall left the series after four years to avoid being typecast.
15. Who imagined his mother emasculating him with a tiny guillotine because he may have used his tongue when kissing a woman?

Answer: Jeff

Jeff had an interesting relationship with his disapproving mother. At the end of this episode, "Naked", Jeff's mother catches him stripping blindfolded for his new girlfriend at what he didn't realize was his surprise 30th birthday party. Most of his work mates were there, too...
