"The Andy Griffith Show": Food, Drink and Spirits Quiz

I grew up watching this great sitcom and could most definitely relate to the small town goings on. That's because I grew up in a place very similar to Mayberry. Note: All the questions in this quiz come from the first five seasons.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the very first episode, "The New Housekeeper", we learned about Opie's cooking prowess and discover what his breakfast specialty was. What dish was it that he made for Andy?

Answer: Forty-five minute hard boiled eggs

Opie got up extra early to make breakfast for his pa in an effort to show him that the two bachelors could get along fine without Aunt Bee. The only housekeeper Opie had ever known, Rose, had gotten married and gone to live with her new husband. Opie was devastated and vowed he wouldn't love no one 'sides Rose and didn't want any other woman in their lives. So he ended up cooking the eggs for 45 minutes (adding water several times because it kept boiling away) until Andy finally awoke and found Opie in the kitchen.
2. Andy was concerned that all the housework was too much for Aunt Bee what with her also taking care of Opie and himself. So Andy arranged for an English chap named Malcolm Merriweather to lend her a hand. One day he fixed lunch for Andy and Barney then delivered it to the courthouse. What dish did he prepare for them?

Answer: Cornish pastie

In this episode titled "Andy's English Valet", Malcolm was on holiday bicycling around America when he happened upon the quaint village of Mayberry. While riding his bike through town he caused a traffic accident and needed to pay $40 in damages. Andy arranged for him to work the debt off by helping Aunt Bee cook and clean around the house.

The Cornish pastie is corned beef and potatoes at one end with plum pudding in the other all wrapped in pastry crust and baked.
3. Barney got himself kicked out of Ms. Mendelbright's boarding house because he cooked in his room! (gasp) Afterwards he was sad because he had such pleasant memories of he and Ms. Mendelbright sitting on her front porch at night in the summer enjoying a glass of what?

Answer: Sweet cider

This was revealed to Andy by Barney because he missed his old room and wanted to go home. While telling this to Andy he was also drinking some of the cider that he had left over from last summer and it seemed that the cider had turned hard so Barney got a little buzzed! This episode was called "Up in Barney's Room".
4. In season one, a stranger got off the bus in Mayberry and headed straight for Floyd's Barbershop. The stranger entered and seemed to know everyone inside and even details about their personal lives. The spooky thing was that no one in town knows who he was or anything about him! Barney was very suspicious of all this and tried in vain to find out something about him. Andy (in teasing Barney) remarked, "Lawwwwwww-eee! You don't reckon he's come down here to steal our recipe for - "? What food finishes Andy's teasing?

Answer: Fried chicken and Johnnycake

It turned out that the newcomer's name was Ed Sawyer and he had come to Mayberry to try and purchase George Safferly's gas station. Appropriately titled "Stranger in Town", it featured William Lanteau as Ed Sawyer. This was also the first appearance of Floyd the barber and the only episode starring Walter Baldwin as Floyd. Subsequent episodes featured Howard McNear in the barber role.

Incidentally, Johnnycake is a flatbread made with either yellow or white cornmeal, milk, salt and a bit of sugar (if desired). It is also known as Johnny bread or hoecakes.
5. The Darling clan rolled into Mayberry and Andy invited them over to have supper. Aunt Bee fixed a lovely meal and everyone enjoyed it. It seemed that neither Mr. Darling nor the boys were very good cooks so Bee made sure everyone got plenty. She then asked Briscoe if he liked a particular item that she had served that night because he didn't have any on his plate. He replied, "Oh - they plumb twang my buds, ma'am!" What food item was he referring to?

Answer: Pearly onions

While Mr. Darling did mention an affinity for white beans in another episode, it was the little pearly onions that set his buds to dancin'! They were served with Aunt Bee's pot roast along with potatoes and carrots. The episode was called "Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee" and was the first show in season four. Denver Pyle played Mr. Darling and the four Darling boys were members of "The Dillards" musical group - Rodney Dillard, Doug Dillard, Mitchell Jayne and Dean Webb.
6. The Morrison Sisters, Jennifer and Clarabelle, may soon need to go into the witness protection program as they squealed on both Ben Sewell and Rube Sloan. Based on the tip from the sisters, Sheriff Taylor arrested these two men and threw them both into the Mayberry slammer. What crime did they commit that got them incarcerated for 48 hours?

Answer: Making moonshine

In this wonderful episode, "Alcohol and Old Lace", the sisters had at least one selfish reason for wanting Ben and Rube's stills put out of action. They were making their own 'elixir' in their hothouse to sell for 'special occasions'. By the way, it seems to me that Ben Sewell must be a separated-at-birth twin because he is the spitting image of Rafe Hollister! I am surprised that Barney with his keen detective skills did not notice this since he did book both of them as prisoners at one time or another?
7. In the fourth episode of season one, "Runaway Kid", which kind of sandwich did Opie NOT make for George 'Tex' Foley to take on his runaway journey to Texas?

Answer: Peanut butter and jelly

He also made one that was peanut butter and liverwurst? Yuck!
The premise of this story was a runaway boy, George Foley, from nearby Eastmont, showed up in Mayberry and was befriended by Opie. Andy finally convinced Tex to head on back home by telling him he'd have to take along at least 600 sandwiches to last him until he reached Texas. Then Sheriff Taylor asked Tex how he was going to carry that many sandwiches and Tex said in his wagon.

Andy shook his head and said he'd never seen a cowboy pulling a wagon load of sandwiches - that just wasn't something cowboys were known to do.
8. Barney took a few well-deserved days off and stayed at a hotel in Raleigh. He wrote Andy a letter telling him that he was having a swell time and that his head hadn't hit the hotel pillow before 11:15 pm. He also mentioned the terrific breakfast the hotel served for only 35 cents. Which of the following items was not part of the 35 cent breakfast?

Answer: Grits

The breakfast did not include grits but did come with juice and coffee. That was a real bargain but Barney also mentioned that it was served at that price only between 5 am - 6 am. This was from the episode "Goober Takes a Car Apart".
9. In the same episode where we learned Aunt Bee just does not have a green thumb for making pickles, we also found out there is one other homemade item she does not have the knack for. What is it?

Answer: Marmalade

In this episode entitled "The Pickle Story", Andy came up with a perfect solution for the 'kerosene cucumbers' that Aunt Bee continued to make. He got store-bought pickles and switched them while she was out of the house. The plan backfired however when she tried one of 'her' pickles and discovered how delicious it was.

She then decided to enter them at the county fair. Andy knew that Clara Johnson won the pickle blue ribbon every year and also that she absolutely lived for that contest. Long story short - they had to eat up all of the store-bought pickles so that Bee would be forced to make a new batch if she wanted to have an entry.

As for the marmalade, Andy and Barney were sitting at the kitchen table and Barney smelled something and asked Andy if he'd been painting.

It turned out Bee made a batch of marmalade that smelled as if she used ammonia as one of the ingredients.
10. In the episode "Three Wishes for Opie", what was the name of the 200 year-old spirit that Barney tried to evoke while trying out his fortune-telling kit?

Answer: Count Istvan Telecky

Barney evidently loved going to the police surplus auctions in Mt. Pilot which was where he purchased the kit. In another episode he bought a motorcycle at one of those auctions. The fortune-telling kit contained an Aladdin-like oil lamp, a deck of cards, magic powder (used to evoke the Count's spirit) and the instruction manual to explain how it all works.

In trying out his purchase he was granted one wish, using it to ask for a new fingerprint kit. Amazingly, that wish was granted. Then, to prove further that the Count's powers were for real he persuaded Opie to try it out. Opie was granted three wishes and they all came true!
