Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reporter, John Cameron Swayze, was the front for this product brand for many, many years. Can you name it?

Answer: Timex

Back when commercials were done live, Timex attached one of their watches to an outboard motor set in a clear tank of water. Swayze extolled the virtues of the watch as the motor churned. When it stopped, not only was the watch not working, it had disappeared completely - not on the motor nor floating in the tank. Sawyze, the consummate professional, simply stated "Had the Timex watch stayed attached to the motor it would still be ticking."
2. Bucky Beaver was the animated huckster who sold what well-known brand?

Answer: Ipana

Because he had big, beaver teeth, Ipana was a part of Bucky's daily regimen. The toothpaste grew less popular when fluoride hit the market in the form of Crest. (Look, Ma, no cavities!)
3. What company sponsored "Sky King"?

Answer: Nabisco

Nabisco was the sponsor of this show about a pilot, his plane, the Songbird, and his niece, Penny. Their ranch was out in the boonies but every week they became involved in a rescue, capture or some other adventure. You'd think they'd move.
4. This well-known ventriloquist and children's performer created Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smith. He also fronted for Tootsie Rolls and many other fine products. Can you name him?

Answer: Paul Winchell

Winchell was incredibly inventive and must have had terrific fine motor skills because in his life he patented several surgical instruments that are still in widespread use today. (With a tip of the hat to richicago for setting me straight. Drat his photographic memory.)
5. Which brewski was known as "the dry beer"?

Answer: Rheingold

"My beer is Rheingold, the dry beer. Think of Rheingold whenever you buy beer. It's not bitter, not sweet, it's the extra dry treat, won't you try, won't you buy Rheingold beer." Rheingold also sponsored an annual "Miss Rheingold" competition in which beer drinkers could vote their preference at the local tavern or liquor store.
6. This product's theme song actually made it onto the record charts with an advertising campaign based on the line "No Matter What Shape Your Stomach Is In". What was the product?

Answer: Alka-Seltzer

The tune was catchy, played over shots of various people's bellies, ending with one old guy poking another in his ample front end.
7. Picture it: a tiny Conestoga wagon pulled by a team of tiny horses and driven by a tiny man with a tiny whip charges across the floor of the archetypal suburban home. A shaggy dog, seeing the apparition, chases after it but the wagon disappears into a kitchen cabinet. What was the product?

Answer: Chuck Wagon

This campaign ran for years. Of course, the horses are all in horse heaven but the tiny driver now works as a pixie.
8. "Does she or doesn't she?" Nothing subtle about this risque slogan. Which product made this line famous?

Answer: Clairol

"Only her hairdresser knows for sure." What, that she dyes her hair?
9. A man, wearing a business suit, slowly falls out of the sky into the seat of a convertable doing 60 mph. What company ran this campaign for several years?

Answer: Hertz

"Hertz puts you in the driver's seat." These commercials were spoofed on every variety show at the time with the driver crashing through the roof, missing the car, landing on his head, etc.
10. Finally, what product did "Choo-Choo Charlie" front for?

Answer: Good 'n' Plenty

"Once upon a time there was an engineer, Choo-Choo Charlie was his name we hear, he had an engine and it sure was fun, he used Good 'n' Plenty candy to make his train run. Charlie says, 'Love my Good 'n' Plenty', Charlie says 'They really ring the bell', Charlie says, 'Love my Good 'n' Plenty, there is no other candy that I love so well".
