Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Between 1996 and 2005, the Jordan Formula One team was sponsored by which brand of cigarette?

Answer: Benson and Hedges

Eddie Jordan's team had a golden livery to match the packaging colour of Benson and Hedges, and with an advertising masterstroke, even managed to stick in the memory at races where tobacco advertising was banned, by using the Benson and Hedges typeface but changing the words. Slogans included "Bitten and Hisses" with a snake mascot, "Buzzin' Hornets" with a hornet mascot, "Bitten Heroes" with a shark mascot, or for me the cleverest one; "Be On Edge", which was Benson and Hedges with a few letters blacked out.
2. In 2004, which Olympic gold medal winner became the face of Baisha, the largest cigarette manufacturer in China?

Answer: Liu Xiang

In 2004, Liu Xiang became the first male athlete to have been World Record Holder, World Champion and Olympic Champion in the 110 metres hurdles. Upon signing the deal with Baisha, the company's president said, "Everyone likes Liu Xiang and hopes he will soar higher and faster and maintain his sunny, healthy, progressive image." Of the other possible answers, Takuma Sato is a Japenese driver and has raced in Formula One and Indy Car, Won Yun-jong is a South Korean bobsledder and Ryom Tae-ok is a figure skater from North Korea.
3. After being without a sponsor since 2003, snooker's Welsh Open was sponsored by betting firm Totesport.com in 2010. Which brand of cigarette had sponsored the competition since its inception in 1992?

Answer: Regal

Regal, from Imperial Tobacco, also sponsored snooker's Scottish Open and China International. Regal used to be made in Nottingham but in 2014 production was moved to Poland and Germany.
4. Between 2000 and 2002, Rothmans cigarettes sponsored one of the classic English horse races. Which race was it?

Answer: St. Leger

Rothmans also sponsored three other races at the Leger meeting, which were all branded as Rothmans Royals races. The cost to Rothmans was £450,000 over the course of the deal. Although the St. Leger has been running since 1776, Rothmans were the first tobacco company to sponsor it.
5. Allan Moffat drove the Mazda RX-7 to victory in the Australian Endurance Championships in both 1982 and 1984. Which cigarette brand was prominently displayed on the car?

Answer: Peter Stuyvesant

Moffat also drove the Peter Stuyvesant Mazda at the Daytona 24 Hour endurance race in USA, where although he qualified in a disappointing 40th place out of 79 entries, he managed to work his way up to ninth place, before a stone was sucked into the car's air intake. The damage caused by this required a pit stop of five hours and the car eventually finished in 24th place.
6. Between 1985 and 2001, Silk Cut cigarettes sponsored the Challenge Cup in which sport?

Answer: Rugby League

Silk Cut's sponsorship of Rugby League's most prestigious cup competition, was the longest sponsorship deal in the sport, lasting 16 years. Following Silk Cut's withdrawal ahead of the ban on cigarette advertising, the competition became the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Challenge Cup as the cereal giant took over for two years.
7. Baseball great Lou Gehrig advertised this cigarette brand, saying that they, "don't get your wind, and I can smoke as many as I please." Which brand did Gehrig sing the praises of?

Answer: Camel

Joe DiMaggio was another baseball player who advertised Camel's saying, "They're so mild, athletes smoke as many as they please", and the claimed benefits of Camel's wasn't restricted to baseball stars either as tennis player Bruce Barnes, Olympic diver, Harold Smith, three time Olympic champion swimmer, Helene Madison and Jim Bausch, who gold in the 1932 Olympic decathlon all sung the brand's praises.
8. Between 1993 and 2004, State Express 555 were the main sponsor of which team in the World Rally Championship?

Answer: Subaru

The Subaru Impreza with it's distinctive blue and yellow colour scheme, resembling a State Express 555 pack, won in 1995, 1996 and 1997. State Express 555 were also one of the major sponsors of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
9. In which sport have Alfred Dunhill managed to circumvent the rules on cigarette advertising by using their luxury goods arm "dunhill" as sponsor, rather than their cigarette manufacturing arm, "Dunhill"?

Answer: Golf

Tobacco sponsorship of all sporting events is banned by the European Union, yet the Dunhill Links Championship is a prestigious pro-am tournament that takes place annually at St. Andrews in Scotland. By using advertising with a lower case 'd', Alfred Dunhill are able to maintain that the sponsor is a manufacturer of luxury goods such as fragrances and cigarette lighters, but not a manufacturer of cigarettes, as that part of the company uses a capital 'D' in its name. Either way, the event attracts big stars each year: professional golfers such as Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie have all competed alongside celebrities such as Ruud Gullit, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Douglas.
10. Olympia cigarettes were the first brand to be designated "official cigarettes" of the Olympics. At which Olympics was this?

Answer: 1964 Tokyo

It seems almost beyond belief today that the Olympics would have an official cigarette sponsor and given the huge rise in cases of lung cancer in Japan following the games, maybe future generations will look back at the modern day sponsorship's by companies such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola and make a link to childhood obesity. Olympia's were a blend of Turkish and Greek tobacco and generated over $1 million in revenue for the Olympic organising committee which in 1964 was a fortune.

The last Olympics to have a tobacco sponsor was the 1984 Los Angeles games.
