1. Skiing - Tallinn - 1.4 million.

Answer: Estonia

The most northerly country of the new members. Estonia's capital is Tallinn. Population of Estonia is about 1.4 million. Estonia is the smallest of the Baltic states. It has good skiers, such as Veerpalu and Smigun. Finland and Sweden have been members of the EU since 1995.
2. Beer - Skoda - Karlovy Vary.

Answer: Czech Republic

It's a landlocked country, with the beautiful city of Prague as its capital. The Czech Republic has 10.2 million inhabitants. Skoda is a well-known car manufacturer in the Czech Republic. Karlovy Vary, better known by its German name, Karlsbad, is the most famous Bohemian spa. We all know how good Czech beer is. Romania will become an EU member on 1 January 2007.
3. Amber - Basketball - Sabonis.

Answer: Lithuania

Lithuania (capital Vilnius) is a country that borders the Baltic Sea, with a population of 3.5 million. This biggest Baltic state has a strong basketball tradition. Lithuania was the basketball champion of Europe in the 2003. Sabonis is the best Lithuanian basketball player ever. Lithuania is famous for its amber, which can be found on the shore of the Baltic Sea. Belgium was one of the first six members of the EU (called the European Economic Community at that time), formed in 1957.
4. Zakopane - 38.2 million - Zloty.

Answer: Poland

Poland is the biggest country of the new members (both in area and population). Poland's capital is Warsaw. It borders seven countries: Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany. Zakopane is the ski resort in south of Poland. Zloty is the currency of Poland. France has been a member of the EU since 1957.
5. Nicosia - island - 0.77 million.

Answer: Cyprus

Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, near the Turkish coast. Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus. The country is divided into two parts. Greeks live in the south of Cyprus, and the smaller northern area is called the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (not recognized by the international community). Iceland isn't a member of the EU. Crete is an island of another EU member - Greece.
6. The Alps - The Adriatic Sea - 1.9 million.

Answer: Slovenia

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia. Slovenia has a population of 1.9 million. Slovenia has a small coastline on the Adriatic Sea, with a couple of great resorts there, such as Koper, Portoroz and Piran. There is small spur of Alps in Slovenia. Austria joined the EU in 1995. As of May 2004, Bulgaria isn't a member, although it is a candidate.
7. 0.4 million - Lira - Valletta.

Answer: Malta

Malta lies in southern Europe, in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Sicily (Italy). Valletta is the capital of Malta. It is the EU smallest country (only 316 sq km). Malta is also the smallest country in terms of population - just 0.4 million inhabitants. The lira used to be the national currency, although it is now the Euro. Italy has been a member of the EU since 1957.
8. Ice hockey - Liepaja - Vaira Vike-Freiberga.

Answer: Latvia

Latvia is another country by the Baltic Sea. Latvia's population is 2.3 million. This Baltic state lies between Estonia and Lithuania. Mrs Vaira Vike-Freiberga has been the president of the country since 1999. Latvia's national sport is ice hockey. Liepaja is a seaport in the west of the country. Latvia has a beautiful landscape, just like the other two Baltic states. Denmark became EU member in 1973.
9. Forint - Debrecen - Balaton.

Answer: Hungary

Hungary's capital is Budapest. It lies on the Danube river. Hungary has 10 million inhabitants, and borders seven countries: Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia and Serbia & Montenegro. The forint is the Hungary's currency and Balaton is one of the biggest lakes in Europe. Debrecen is the second largest city of Hungary. Spain and Portugal are EU members since 1986.
10. Carpathians (Karpaty) - Ice hockey - Kosice.

Answer: Slovakia

Slovakia has a population of 5.4 million. Its capital is Bratislava and the second largest city in terms of population is Kosice. Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Slovakia. In 1918, the Slovaks joined the closely related Czechs to form Czechoslovakia.

The Slovaks separated from the Czechs on the 1st January 1993. As of May 2004, Turkey is a candidate for membership of the EU. The Netherlands has been a member since 1957, and Ireland joined in 1973.
