Security and transportation are taxpayer supported.
7. What public event does the White House hold at Eastertime?

Answer: Easter egg roll

Reports of White House egg-rolling celebrations date back to President Abraham Lincoln's administration (1861 to 1865). Some members of Congress didn't like the idea of children trampling on the White House lawn, so in 1876 they passed the Turf Protection Law.

This law prohibited the grounds of the White House from being used as a playground and put an end to the Easter egg roll. Public outrage led to the reinstatement of the event by President Rutherford Hayes in 1878. The Easter egg roll, which takes place on the Monday following Easter, has been a popular White House tradition ever since.

9. On August 24, 1814, during the War of 1812, British troops set the White House on fire. What did the British troops do immediately beforehand?

Answer: Went inside and had dinner

The troops arrived just before a dinner for 40 people was to be served. The dining room was beautifully set for the elaborate dinner waiting in the kitchen. The rationed and weary soldiers simply couldn't resist! So, they took a little break to enjoy the meal before they went out and torched the White House. First Lady Dolley Madison, who was hosting the dinner, managed to escape only moments before the troops stormed in.

As she fled, Dolley Madison grabbed a full-length portrait of George Washington painted by Gilbert Stuart, thereby saving one of America's greatest treasures.

The famous painting is titled "Lansdowne Portrait" and it is on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. It is one of only three known items to have survived the fire of 1814.
