Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Great Mosque of Djenné, the largest mud-brick building in the world, was rebuilt in 1906 by the French government of which African nation?

Answer: Mali

It's unknown when the original mosque was built, but is believed to have been built sometime between 1200 - 1300. It was in ruins when the French conquered Mali in the 1890s. The rebuilt mosque was designated a World Heritage Site in 1988.
2. Begun in 1468 in Munich, Germany, the Frauenkirche was nearly destroyed during World War II. One legendary object, known as "Der schwarze Tritt", survived the war. By what English name is the floor tile known?

Answer: Devil's Footprint

There are two legends surrounding the Devil's Footprint. One claims the architect made a deal with the Devil to complete the cathedral in record time, but tricked the Devil by not putting in windows, thereby leaving it unfinished. The Devil then left his footprint in the stone in anger, as he could not claim the soul he had been promised.
3. Called the largest religious monument in the world, this temple complex in Cambodia was built as the earthly home of the god Vishnu. What is the site's modern name?

Answer: Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, built during the 1100s, was originally called "Vrah Viṣṇuloka", meaning the sacred dwelling place of Vishnu. Gradually, the temple complex shifted from Hinduism to Buddhism, and became a pilgrimage location. Angkor Wat was designated a World Heritage Site in 1992.
4. Located in the city of Brasilia, itself considered a World Heritage Site, is this building, more suited to a sci-fi movie set than a modern city. What is housed in this futuristic building?

Answer: National Congress of Brazil

The Brazilian National Congress is a modernist-style building designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The city of Brasilia itself was a planned city, built to house the Brazilian government. Completed in 1960, the entire city took about 42 months to complete.
5. True or false? L'Anse aux Meadows was recently determined to have been settled by the same people who were responsible for the infamous "Vinland Map".

Answer: False

Completely false. The "Vinland Map" has been conclusively proven to be a fake, and has nothing to do with the settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows. The archaeological site was discovered in 1960 at the northern tip of Newfoundland, in Canada. The site is believed to date from around the year 1000, and is currently the only verified Norse settlement in North America.
6. Despite its name, this Indian building was used as a palace during the Mughal Dynasty. Located near New Delhi, it was build during the reign of Shah Jahan in the mid-1600s.

Answer: Red Fort

The Red Fort was built around 1639, and functioned as Shah Jahan's palace. The palace's name comes from the red sandstone used to build the outer walls. Today, it remains as one of the symbols of the Mughal dynasty, though much less famous than Shah Jahan's Taj Mahal.
7. This ancient city, located in Iran, functioned as the winter capital and residence of Persian kings such as Darius I and Xerxes.

Answer: Susa

Now mostly ruins, this famous city was destroyed at least three times over it's history. A capital of several ancient empires, it survived until the late 1500s, by which time the population had mostly moved to the neighboring town of Shush.
8. This ruined city was once the capital of one of the largest African kingdoms, lasting nearly 500 years. A hint to its location would only give away the answer.

Answer: Great Zimbabwe

Great Zimbabwe was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. Construction is believed to have begun sometime during the 11th century, and the city was inhabited until the mid-1400s, when a possible lack of natural resources forced its abandonment.
9. Long believed to be merely a legend, this famed city was finally unearthed in 1875. The city had been built and rebuilt many times, and the current archaeological site contains nine separate "cities", named I through IX.

Answer: Troy

Long believed to be a legend from Homer's 'Iliad', Heinrich Schliemann discovered Troy in 1875, and further excavations have uncovered much of the fabled city of Troy. Although the excavations were first performed by Schliemann, the site was first surveyed by Frank Calvert, brother of an American consul
10. Located in the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, is this familiar building. Probably best known for appearing in an Indiana Jones movie, what is the building's English name?

Answer: The Treasury

While most people recognize the façade of the treasury building, Petra actually contains more than 25 excavated ruins, including burial chambers, temples, and even an old crusader fort.
