Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The cities of Beverwijk and Neuiw Amsterdam were renamed Albany and New York by the British after which king, famous for his version of a very popular book?

Answer: King James I

Two of the titles held by King James I was Duke of Albany and Duke of York. The future King James II was, at the time the British took control of New Netherland, called Prince James, Duke of Albany.
2. After the British gained control of the colony of New Netherland in 1664, they required the Dutch to stop using the patronymic naming system and use surnames, like we do today.

Answer: False

There was never any law requiring this. As less people were speaking Dutch and following Dutch customs, more began following the British custom of using surnames. Population growth also forced this change, as increased urbanization meant it would have been impossible to figure out exactly who you were talking about.
3. After losing New Netherland to the English, the Dutch recaptured their former colony during the Third Anglo-Dutch War.

Answer: True

The war went badly for the English. After losing New Netherland and several naval battles, the English Parliament refused to let King Charles II continue the war. The Dutch gave the colony back to England in exchange for the colony of Suriname in 1674.
4. In 1777, on their way to Saratoga, the British had a capital idea and burned down the town of Kingston. Why was Kingston burned instead of just capturing it as was usual?

Answer: Kingston was the capital of New York.

Kingston was the first capital of the state of New York. After it was burned, the fledgling government relocated to Albany. The delay this caused the British prevented them from reinforcing their army at the Battle of Saratoga, contributing to their defeat at that battle.
5. One of the largest land transactions in New York occurred in 1707 when Johannes Hardenburgh bought a vast amount of land from local Indians for £60. Known as the "Hardenburgh Patent", just how vast was the purchase?

Answer: two million acres

The exact boundaries of the Hardenburgh Patent were never surveyed. By the time the United States was formed, ownership of the land had become a tangled mess which caused problems trying to settle the western part of the state just after the Revolution.
6. If you are researching ancestors from New York during the Revolution, you might come across Tryon County. Try as you might you won't find it on modern maps. Why did this county disappear after the Revolution?

Answer: It was named after a British governor of New York.

Tryon County was named for William Tryon, the British governor of New York just prior to and during the Revolution. After the Revolution, the name was changed to Montgomery County, in honor of an American general killed during the war.
7. Among the first permanent settlers in the Hudson Valley was a group of French Protestants known as Huguenots. What caused them to flee France during a period of religious upheaval?

Answer: Persecution by the Catholic monarchy

The Huguenots initially relocated to the area near Mannheim, Germany. As pressure continued to grow, they were forced to again flee. Some escaped to New Netherland, and founded the village of New Paltz, New York.
8. During the Revolution, most of the settlers living in the Mohawk River valley abandoned their farms and fled closer to the Hudson. What prompted the sudden flight?

Answer: The "Burning of the Valley".

After defeating the colonial militia, a force of British and Indians systematically burned the homesteads and farmland throughout the Mohawk Valley. This act, along with other various border disputes, made resettling the western part of New York very difficult after the Revolution.
9. The Reformed Church in America, often called the oldest established church in the USA still in existence, was the colonial off-shoot of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Netherlands. New Amsterdam saw the formation of the Reformed Church in what year?

Answer: 1628

The first church built in the New Netherland colony was built in 1628 in New Amsterdam. he church building that stands today on the corner of 5th Avenue and West 29th Street was built in 1851.
10. In 1783, while General Washington was at the town of Newburgh, an attempt was made to start a coup by the Continental Army. Condemning the lack of Congressional support at the time, as well as the lack of pay, letters were circulated through the camp calling for the overthrow of the Continental Congress. What name has been given to this failed coup attempt?

Answer: "Newburgh Conspiracy"

While the possibility of a coup actually occurring have been debated, General Washington was alarmed enough to give a speech to the army, called the "Newburgh Address", to try to ease the fears of the soldiers and exhort them to continue trusting him to make the proper course of action as they had throughout the Revolution.
