dsimpy, I've heard only good things about Belfast Zoo but fate interferes whenever I've tried to visit. I've been to Edinburgh Zoo (loved it) where there's a bit of a climb to the farthest enclosures too, as I recall (as I recall I didn't make it all the way, lol!) but there was a fabulous penguin collection at the bottom of the hill that I was happy to stay with.

Dublin Zoo used to have Prairie Dogs, they always seemed to be invisible. Maybe burrowing animals are difficult to keep in one place? :D

Athlone.... doesn't have a zoo.

Disappointed to hear that about Athlone. What are we supposed to do over a long wet weekend now?? :-(

Apparently Viking Mike runs a tour (long)boat from Athlone Castle to Lough Ree ... so (zoo or not) we could be in for some excitement yet!! ;-)

Apparently a whole bunch of world leaders and their pals are wandering around Ireland at the moment. Anyone spot any of them yet? 5 points for a sighting, 10 if you manage to throow an egg at one.

What's the offical name for a group of world leaders anyway? A flock? A pack? A gaggle?

Sorry. You'll need to get used to typos from me, by the way. But they make for an authentic air of "pub barfly", don't they!!?

I graced(!) Dublin yesterday with a brief visit on the way home from Athlone ... but failed to spot Michelle and children despite lurking suspiciously down Pearse Street, chatting to a few Guards about parking restrictions, and sauntering up and down Grafton and Dawson streets.

Actually my priorities were (a) escorting my daughters in search of summer wear (apparently Belfast doesn't have an A/wear whereas Dublin has two!) and (b) succumbing foolishly to the extravagance of buying whiskey I could probably buy cheaper online!

I went firstly to Mitchell & Sons, who abandoned their delightful historic shop in Kildare Street a few years back to inhabit a boutique shop in the cavernous and empty-looking CHQ mall on the Quays. Unfortunately they were sold out of Yellow Spot. I'm pretty confident they had a small residual stash of it lurking out the back of the shop for favoured customers, but despite chatting and smiling affably with the manager for 10 minutes I couldn't elevate myself to that status, and had to settle for buying a bottle of Powers John's Lane. Then up to the Celtic Whiskey Shop in Dawson Street where I found a hard-to-get bottle of Redbreast Cask Strength, a bottle of Teeling and a bottle of Palace Bar. Alongside the bottle of Old Pulteney Scottish single malt one of my daughters gave me in Athlone for father's day, that left me groaning under the weight of new additions to my whiskey collection. I need a new cupboard now for the overspill!

We'd a very nice lunch in Pacino's in Suffolk Street - lovely food, friendly waiter. They really should provide disability-access toilets though - taking my daughter down steep stairs to a cramped cubicle in the men's toilets for a pee was less than ideal!!

We dashed home then to Belfast, but I think Barack had already left for Omagh. Really though, of them all, I'd like to see the Putin guy!

Overall a very enjoyable day. :)

Chavs: A zoo of world leaders?

With that particular bunch, I think the collective name for a group of crows is probably most apt ...

... A murder of world leaders!
