Any favourites for the Rose of Tralee? I'm hoping for the New Orleans Rose. Not only a lovely girl but such a classic moment when her boyfriend proposed to her during the interview and she said "No..no!..NO..no no... No... NO..." (Eventually yes, allegedly|)

I just looked this up, having heard of the song, but not the festival. It seems this is much more than a beauty contest. Brains count! Not knowing anything about the contestants, I guess I'm rooting for the New York Rose, by default :-)

Postie, it's a strange contest, remarkably boring to watch, and very like The Lovely Girls in the 'Father Ted' comedy if you've ever seen that?

Instead of a swimsuit section they have a talent section, which can be anything, usually dancing, singing, saying a poem. And it's very centred on their mums and dads. In fact, when the winner is chosen, she's always walked down to her mum and dad in the audience. That's part of the prize.

The prize is a car, a week's holiday in Kerry, and a set of cutlery. The Rose also has to travel the world doing good wherever she goes for the next year. I mean, she HAS to. That's the price of success.

And yet... it's also probably the best of these types of competitions, I agree. You win for being a lovely person. Lovely girls.

Three mates and I drove down from Belfast once for Rose of Tralee Week. We sat in a bar (mostly the same one) drinking nonstop for four days from 12 noon to 2.00am, and missed the whole thing.

I think the Rose from Leeds called into the bar we were in for a flying visit (as she was sponsored by that bar), but apart from foggily spotting her sash through a miasma of drink I recall nothing either of her beauty or brains! :)

For all we saw of Tralee or the festival, I've never been quite sure why we went down there (though I'm sure it's great!). We could just have sat drinking for four days in Hoppy Dobbins (now Biddy Duffys) on the Andersonstown Road and saved ourselves the drive! :)

Quite obviously you were there to give the festival some je ne sais quoi! Ask not what the festival can do for you...

I'm happy to see the judges had the good sense to choose a Texas girl this year :)

Actually, "The Rose of Tralee" is probably not an Irish song at all. Local legends notwithstanding, the song appears to have been written around the middle of the 19th century by two Englishmen, C. Mourdant Spencer (lyrics) and Charles William Glover (music). They are the names appearing on the earliest sheet music.

Just like some Irish songs not being all they appear, it seems Haley O'Sullivan is only a recent Texas blow-in, and is actually a born and bred Arizona girl. :)

Thanks, Postie. It's a bit hit and miss but I've been trying to pick some different topics but add an Irish taste (else what's the point? :)).

Any suggestions or requests for special topics or favourite categories are gladly received!

Did you see the little storm in a teacup (well, mild squall in a thimble really) about it all being a fix? The cutlery had already been engraved with the O'Sullivan family crest, suggesting that they knew in advance who the winner would be (Miss O'Sullivan from Texas via Arizona). However, Newbridge Silver, proud makers of forks and tiaras and stuff, deny all prior knowledge saying the cutlery they showed on the night just had that crest on it coincidentally.

A likely story! ;)
