Some pubs around went all out and spent thousands on a descent beer garden/smoking area and it really made a difference while I suppose others just couldn't afford to do that and they are the ones struggling to stay open. I don't know how my local is still open as no one really goes into it anymore. They never have any live music, only the music channels on the television. I am too young to remember the early Logan years. :) I only know his songs from the radio. My favourite Eurovision song is Katrina and the Waves (Love Shine a Light). I like Sweden's winning song from last year and this year I like Germany and Denmark. Eurovision is way too long, I prefer the voting part to the singing part. Reply #41. May 15 13, 5:36 PM |

Welcome to the pub, postcards. You qualify for full membership, rather than honorary, on the basis (at least) of celtic soul! Céad míle fáilte :) Reply #42. May 15 13, 5:42 PM |

*Santana finally toddles her way to this side of FT* Thanks Chavs, for the invite (& the link). Never having visited here before I appreciate the pointer! AND I back you up 100% over the smokey upper deck on the busses! Add in the vapour of a deckload of steaming wet coats and dreeping windows in the depths of winter and you're just about get and idea of what it was like  Now, I'll check back tonight and see what I can get up to here, as I have really only used the forum up to this ("is that really possible?!?!?!", I hear you all mutter, hehe). Cheers! Reply #48. May 16 13, 12:18 AM |

Oh yes, those were the days! :) As some of you will know, in West Belfast we have the 'black taxis' that are a form of communal transport. You flag one down and if there's room you pile into the back alongside any other passengers who happen to be there already. When you get as close as you can get to where you want to go, you rap the driver's window and get out. It's more regulated now than it used to be - i.e. no-smoking and only one passenger per seat - but in the good old 'unlicensed' days there could have been 7 or 8 squeezed into the back and two passengers on the front bucket seat, you'd find a total stranger sat on your knee ... if it was raining the steam off people's clothes would be class, some toddler would clearly need their nappy changed (!), there'd be at least one stocious drunk trying to be your mate, and a couple of passengers and the driver would be puffing away on their fags. Brilliant! ... And the conversations you'd hear passing between total strangers! ... I remember listening for 20 minutes to a gruesomely detailed account of someone's recent childbirth experience, and even for someone like me who's been at his own children's births it was a little too graphic! Oh those WERE the days! Reply #50. May 16 13, 5:03 AM |

Hi guys. Greetings from sunny Donegal! Well, at least I think it's the sun - it's been so long since I've seen it that I could be mistaken. I've only found this 'Pub' so I've just dropped in to say hello. I'll call back for a pint later. Joannie Reply #51. May 17 13, 7:15 AM |

Hi Chavs, thanks for the invite, great idea,I have to say when Dana won for Ireland in 1970, it was great, a nice catchy tune. Reply #52. May 17 13, 8:23 AM |

Greetings from a sunny Dublin. In reference to "the rise" in Belfast Dubliners have similar amusing names. For instance the statue "Anna Livia" is also known as "the floozy in the Jacuzzi" Reply #53. May 17 13, 8:32 AM |

The Falls black taxis started in the early 1970s. The buses kept getting withdrawn from the Falls Road because of the Troubles, and when that happened no-one could get moving (there were few cars back then) for groceries, appointments or whatever. Some bright spark came up with an idea, took the ferry across to England, came back with a battered old 'London cab', and started driving up and down the Falls as a community cab. Before long the idea had caught on, there was a Falls Taxi Association formed, and there were about 400 cabs operating throughout West Belfast. They're still going strong today! :) Reply #55. No I would not have voted for Dana for the President, she is a bit too straight laced for me, she was here in Tralee before the last election, I happened to be in town at that time, but a lot of people were shaking her hand. Reply #56. May 17 13, 12:13 PM |

I heard the same about next week's weather (so they'll have to shoot both of us) and tomorrow is supposed to be really wet. My nephew's first birthday party is tomorrow so trust the rain to come that day. Those old taxis with everyone and anyone in them, how would the fare work? I couldn't vote for Dana, she's just way too religious to listen to every day. Reply #58. May 17 13, 2:01 PM |
