Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which city was Ago born? It's the same city where the Mille Miglia classic and vintage cars race starts from.

Answer: Brescia

He was born in 1942. He's always lived in Lovere, on Lake Iseo.
2. Ago started in 190 Grand Prix races. How many of them did he win?

Answer: 123

The first win was in 1965, the last in 1976. Some sources say 122. It is an absolute record. In 1968, 1969 and 1970 he won all the races in the 350 and 500cc Grand Prix Championship.
3. The young Ago needed his father signature to be allowed to race. How did he get it?

Answer: The father believed it was signing for a bicycle race.

Actually, his father was completely against his son's passion, but asked a friend for advice: his friend was a bit deaf, so he understood it was about a bicycle race and told Ago's father to sign because "a bit of sport is healthful".
4. Which motorbike did Ago ride when he won the Italian Juniores Speed 175 cc Championship in 1963?

Answer: Morini

In the same year he won also the Campionato Italiano di Velocità in Salita, or Mountain Speed Championship and raced in the 250cc Grand Prix Championship with Morini.
5. In 1965, Ago started racing in the World Grand Prix Championship, in the 350cc and 500cc classes. For nine consecutive years, he raced on an Italian bike in both classes. Which one?

Answer: MV Agusta

He won 13 Championships with MV Agusta and two with Yamaha. In 1976 he raced again with MV for one year.
6. Which prestigious American race did Ago win in 1974?

Answer: Daytona 200

Before the race he was nicknamed "Ago the Dago" by American press, but the soubriquet didn't stick. It was his first race with Yamaha, and he made his debut beating the local idol Kenny Roberts. 1974 can be considered a "lean" year for the champ, since he won "only" the 350cc championship.
7. In 1970, Ago won 19 races. This is a record, that he shares with which other great biker, a legendary Briton?

Answer: Mike Hailwood

Formerly teammates, Ago and Mike became great rivals, especially at the in Tourist Trophy in the Isle of Man. Mike won 14 times, Ago 10.
8. Tourist Trophy: how did Ago perform on the Isle Man in 1973?

Answer: He refused to race.

After the death of his friend, the Italian rider Gilberto Parlotti, Ago announced that he would never race again at the TT, because it was too dangerous. Highly spectacular, the race is very unsafe indeed, having claimed more than 250 lives so far. Since 1977, the race is not part of the Grand Prix schedule. Thanks also to Ago.
9. Ago had another great rival, an Italian racer who tragically died in Monza in 1973. He had the same family name as a famous Italian film director, Renzo _____ .

Answer: Pasolini

May 20, 1973 was one of the saddest days in motorsport history. Ago had just beaten Pasolini in the 350 cc race. One hour later, Pasolini took part in the 250cc race. In the first lap, he fell and hit the guard-rail. His bike rebounded and hit the Finnish Jarno Saarinen. Both riders died.
10. Ago stopped competing on motorbikes in 1977, having won 15 Grand Prix Championships. After that, he tried his luck in other careers. In which one of these for did he *NOT* try his luck?

Answer: Singer

Ago competed in the European Formula 2 series and in the British F1 Championship in the late 1970s, with littles success. He was a successful team manager instead, for Cagiva, Yamaha and Honda. Being a good-looking man, with a large female fan-base, he starred also in four films: a documentary and three feature films, in which his character is always, of course, a pilot.
