Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first stop in our road trip is May of 1970, when "The Long and Winding Road" was first released. What final Beatles album, also including the songs "Two of Us" and "For You Blue", contained this song?

Answer: Let It Be

"Let it Be" was the last album the Beatles released before they disbanded. The idea of the album was to give it a simpler sound by recording them live and not adding in any extra sounds or effects later. However, this idea fell flat when producer Phil Spector entered the picture, adding an instrumental arrangement and choir to "The Long and Winding Road". Even still, this song was the Beatles' last number one single in the United States.
2. Next up is 1972, when a young black artist released her own version of "The Long and Winding Road". This artist died in August of 2018, but her songs, such as "Respect" and "Baby I Love You", live on. Who is this Queen?

Answer: Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin covered multiple Beatles songs. Paul McCartney actually gave her a demo of "Let It Be" before he released the song as a single. She liked to put her own twist on each song, changing "Eleanor Rigby" from third-person to first-person and giving "The Long and Winding Road" a gospel aspect.
3. In 1976, Olivia Newton-John released an album called "Come On Over". One of the songs in this album was "The Long and Winding Road". Another song in this album was also a version of a traditional song dating back to Henry VIII. What was this song?

Answer: Greensleeves

Olivia Newton-John covered multiple songs in her 1976 album including "Jolene", which was originally sang by Dolly Parton, and Roy Acuff's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain". The song "Greensleeves" is generally believed to have been written by Henry VIII about his future wife Anne Boleyn.
4. Peter Frampton also covered "The Long and Winding Road" as part of a movie soundtrack. This movie, released in 1978, was a musical full of Beatles songs about a musical group whose instruments were stolen. The name of the movie is also the name of what 1967 Beatles album?

Answer: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

This movie did not receive splendid reviews, receiving a 4/10 rating on IMDB and a 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some have claimed that this movie actually ruined the careers of the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. Other Beatles albums that are also movie titles, including "Yellow Submarine" and "Magical Mystery Tour", fared much better.
5. This song was again covered in 1995 by artist George Benson as part of an album called "(I Got No Kick Against) Modern ____." In this album, various artists such as Tom Scott, Dave Grusin, and Diana Krall covered Beatles songs like "The Long and Winding Road" in what music genre?

Answer: Jazz

"(I Got No Kick Against) Modern Jazz" describes itself as "A GRP Artists' Celebration of the Songs of the Beatles". This album featured a mixture of artists singing Beatles songs such as "Let It Be" by Nelson Rangell, "Eleanor Rigby" by Chick Corea, and "Blackbird" by Arturo Sandoval. As might be inferred from the title of the album, each piece was turned into jazz.
6. In 1999, George Michael gave a live performance of "The Long and Winding Road" at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This was part of a special concert known as the Concert for Linda for what reason?

Answer: The death of McCartney's wife

In 1998, Linda McCartney, wife of Paul McCartney, died of breast cancer. A year later, the Concert for Linda was held at the Royal Albert Hall. George Michael gave his first live performance in two years, covering the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and "The Long and Winding Road" as well as singing his own single, "Faith".
7. The Langley Schools Music Project was a chorus of sixty school-age children led by music teacher Hans Fenger. In 2001, they released an album which included "The Long and Winding Road". These children were from the city of Langley, a municipality in the province of British Columbia, in what country?

Answer: Canada

The Langley Schools Music Project was a pretty big success considering it was performed by nine to twelve year-olds and teacher Hans Fenger admitted he didn't really know much about teaching music. The recordings were never supposed to be widespread until they were discovered by Irwin Chusid, who arranged to sell them worldwide.
8. In 2001, Tom Jones released the album "Green, Green Grass of Home" that included "The Long and Winding Road". However, he had the opportunity to be the first artist to record the song. According to an interview with Tom Jones in 2012, Paul McCartney offered him the song on what condition (that he later refused)?

Answer: He had to make it his next single

In an interview with WalesOnline, Jones said that Paul McCartney wanted him to make "The Long and Winding Road" his next single, but Jones was already working on a song called "Without Love". Jones asked his record company if he could stop everything to record "The Long and Winding Road" but was told it would take too much time, so he turned down the offer.
9. In 2002, Will Young and Gareth Gates teamed up to cover "The Long and Winding Road". During the bridge, Gareth Gates had a short solo where he sang "Many times I've been alone, many times I've cried". Sticking to the original lyrics of the song, what part did Will Young sing after these words?

Answer: "Anyway, you'll never know the many ways I've tried"

This isn't the first time Will Young has been associated with Gareth Gates. Both of the singers were on the British television show "Pop Idol". Will Young actually won the show while Gareth Gates received runner-up, though they have both gone on to make many songs.
10. Paul McCartney never liked the original version of "The Long and Winding Road", so in 2003 a new album was released with that song and the others in its original album. These new songs did not have the technological sound effects added in the original album, which caused them to add what word to the new album's title?

Answer: Naked

"Let It Be... Naked" was truer to the band's original idea of the album "Let It Be". The band intended "Let It Be" to be a recording of their live sound without any additional tune-ups or effects added in later, but their producer had different ideas. "Let It Be... Naked" finally followed through on that idea of pure, unedited sound.
