Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Its flat body is wider than it is high with short legs. It has a slightly upturned snout and a striped face.

Answer: Badger

Badgers are short mammals which are well known for being incredible diggers. They are also generally quite fearless. Some variants, such as the honey badger, have remarkably durable skin.
2. This large rodent has dark brown fur and a flat, hairless tail. It spends its lifetime in or around water.

Answer: Beaver

Beavers are considered rodents and have large incisor teeth grow throughout their lifetime. They are semiaquatic, capable of swimming at surprisingly high speeds which can top out as high as 5 miles per hour or 2.23 meters per second. They also have very large lungs which lets them hold their breath for as many as fifteen minutes underwater.
3. This is the most common of the wildcats. Its coat is a tawny tan color in the summer, and somewhat gray in winter. The legs have black horizontal bars.

Answer: Bobcat

Bobcats are carnivorous animals which tend to roam the forest or woods. They are known for being quite predatory and aggressive. However, they are typically not a threat to humans unless somehow threatened, and will generally tend to flee if actually approached.
4. This compact, chunky, short-legged animal has yellowish-white fur that is shaggy in winter, and shorter in the summer. Both sexes have a beard and horns.

Answer: Mountain goat

Mountain goats are notable for being good at climbing up steep surfaces, with strong legs and toes which help them assert traction and grip small surfaces like rocks. As the name indicates, they tend to live in mountains, where they can avoid their predators such as bears or wolves.
5. According to folklore, Ben Franklin thought this bird should have been favored over the chosen national symbol of the U.S.A.

Answer: Wild turkey

The wild turkey was officially labeled as so in 1758, and five different variations of it would be labeled over the ensuing roughly sixty years. They are big birds, with males weighing roughly around twenty pounds, or nine kilograms. Turkeys are generally thought to be some of the heaviest flying birds in the world.
6. This is a large warm water animal. Its body is grayish, and almost completely hairless. It has a broad, paddle-shaped tail.

Answer: Manatee

Manatees are some of the friendliest aquatic animals to humans in the world. Part of this is probably to do with the fact that they have no natural predators, and would not have to live with the stress that entails. They are known for being very curious creatures, and will amicably seek contact with humans. Because this is a highly protected species, people are often extremely limited in how they can legally interact with a manatee in return.
7. This is the largest member of the deer family.

Answer: Moose

Within North America, it's the state of Alaska where you are the likeliest to find a moose, as it has by far the most moose dense population. Incidentally, only male moose grow antlers, which are shed in the winter and regrown during the spring. The hollow hairs in their coats provide excellent insulation, key to their survival in cold climates such as Alaska.
8. Another large rodent which has a name derived from the French.

Answer: Porcupine

Porcupines are rodents which are well known for their spiky coverings. These are often referred to as 'quills'. And porcupines are built to last, as a single porcupine can potentially harbor up to 30,000 of them across its back, sides and tail. A quill is, in essence, a regular hair with keratin in it. Keratin is what human nails are made of, and the porcupine can hold thousands of them at once.
9. Famous as a national symbol, this animal was removed from the endangered species list in June 2007.

Answer: Bald eagle

The bald eagle is the only eagle species which is found solely in North America, which offers a sturdy rationale for it becoming the national emblem of the US. As alluded to in the question, this was once considered an endangered species as; in 1963, there were just an estimated 417 of them.

In the 21st century, and into the 2020s, this would grow into the hundred thousands, reaching as high as 400,000 of them. It was on June 28th, 2007 when it was officially no longer considered an endangered species.
10. This is a large ungainly bird, with a large amount of extra skin hanging under its bill.

Answer: Pelican

As mentioned in the question, pelicans have enormous throat pouches which can hold up to three gallons of water. It is a unique, but efficient, tool to hunt fish with because pelicans can hunt by diving into bodies of water and to gulp their prey out. They are also some of the oldest birds in existence, estimated to have inhabited the Earth for over 30 million years.
