Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Orcs from Minas Morgul cross the river Anduin

Answer: Osgiliath

The Battle of Osgiliath is the first battle depicted in the film. At the end of the previous film, "The Two Towers", we had left the valiant captain Faramir with his small band to await a brutal assault. Indeed, as the two hobbits, Frodo and Sam, are climbing the twisted steps of Cirith Ungol, at the entrance of Mordor, the gates of the fell city Minas Morgul open and an immense Orc army pours out. Later, we see them cross the river Anduin into the ruins of Osgiliath. Faramir and the garrison put on a determined stand, but, as one of the Captain's lieutenants bitterly says, while sporting a bleeding gash on his forehead, "We can't hold them.

The city is lost." Faramir orders a retreat and the decimated Men leave the ruins, save for the lieutenant, who gets separated from his Captain and gets run through with a spear, while lying on the stony ruins.
2. One of Faramir's lieutenants is killed by Orcs

Answer: Osgiliath

Pressed by the Orcs and, even worse, by the Nazgul, the undead servants of the Dark Lord Sauron who ride dragon-like beasts, Faramir has no choice but to retreat. His lieutenant, who had told him that Osgiliath is lost, gets separated from the remnants of the retreating band and falls down. Orcs surround him, including their chieftain.

The hopeless lieutenant looks above while the Orc chieftain seizes a spear from one of his minions, thrusting it through the man's body. The lieutenant utters a low-pitched grunt and dies.

As the glint of the sun is visible through the dark clouds that creep ahead Mordor's immense army, the Orc captain proudly exclaims that the age of Men is over and the time of the Orcs has come.
3. The forces of Gondor retreat to their capital

Answer: Osgiliath

The Orcs, due to sheer numerical advantage, succeed in capturing the city of Osgiliath and the west bank of the river Anduin, as Faramir tells Gandalf shortly afterwards. Although Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, had foreseen this doom, he did nothing to prevent it.

A few minutes later, Denethor, after blatantly admitting that he wished Faramir were dead and his older brother, Boromir, alive, orders him to recapture the overrun positions. Despite Gandalf's warning not to throw his life away, Faramir obeys.

The battle is revealed to be a slaughter and the men of Gondor perish by Orcish arrows, except for the badly-wounded Faramir. While Gondor's soldiers are sacrificed in this pointless move, Denethor is dining, while the Hobbit Peregrin Took sings a very moving song.

The tomato juice running down Denethor's chin looks red, like blood.
4. A gruesome "release" of prisoners is ordered by an Orc captain

Answer: Minas Tirith

After the Osgiliath debacle, the capital of Gondor, Minas Tirith, is now besieged. The Orcs, led by the Witch-King of Angmar and the Captain who won at Osgiliath, are laying their siege engines and are getting in formation to storm the city. After inspecting his troops, the Captain surmises that Minas Tirith is gripped by fear and then orders his minions to "release the prisoners". Immediately, decapitated human heads are catapulted inside Minas Tirith, in a testament of the evilness of Sauron's forces.
5. Rohan, led by Theoden King, arrives at the aid of Gondor

Answer: Minas Tirith

Since early in the film, the wizard Gandalf had the Hobbit Peregrin Took light a beacon fire that would alert the realm of Rohan of Gondor's needs for reinforcements. Theoden, King of Rohan, answered in the affirmative to that request and had his subordinates assemble all men able to fight. Yet, they are few in number and there is widespread fear that they are not enough to break through Sauron's siege of Minas Tirith.

However, they are determined to stand and not allow evil to conquer.
6. Eowyn slays the Witch-King of Angmar

Answer: Minas Tirith

Eowyn, the niece of Theoden, wished to participate in the battle from the start. Although her uncle ordered her to take up his own seat in the palace of Meduseld, she nonetheless puts armor on and, taking the Hobbit Meriadoc Brandybuck with her, accompanies Rohan's armies.

At some point in the battle, the Rohirrim are hard-pressed by Sauron's oliphaunt-riding allies, the Haradrim, as well as the Nazgul and their dragon-like steeds. While rallying his troops, Theoden is thrown off his horse, which falls on top of him.

The Witch-King of Angmar, Lord of the Nazgul and commander of Sauron's armies, orders his steed to feed with Theoden's flesh. Eowyn steps between the Nazgul and his prey, decapitating the beast and engaging the Witch-King in combat.

Although the Nazgul chief initially corners her, breaking her shield with his mace, Meriadoc Brandybuck stabs him from behind, making him stumble. Eowyn then removes her helmet, revealing her status as a woman, and drives her sword through his helmet, killing him, thus fulfilling the prophecy that "no man" would eliminate the Witch-King.
7. The Army of the Dead fulfills a millennia-old oath

Answer: Minas Tirith

As revealed to us mid-way through the film, the Army of the Dead is a deadly host of Men who had betrayed Isildur, King of Gondor, millennia before the events of the film when they broke his oaths to him. Isildur had cursed them never to find peace after death, until they fulfilled their oath. Aragorn, being the Heir of Isildur, is the only one who can course through the Paths of the Dead and call them to fulfil their oath. Aragorn does this and the Dead agree to fight for him.

They intercept the evil Corsairs of Umbar and, seizing their ships, they arrive near the besieged Minas Tirith at the nick of time, destroying the Orcish hosts. With the city relieved, Aragorn tells the Dead that they can now rest in peace.

Their leader bows his head in gratitude and a gust of wind blows through the ghostly army as they dissipate into thin air.
8. Aragorn orders this battle as a diversion

Answer: Black Gate

Although Sauron has suffered a crushing defeat, at least ten thousand Orcs lie in reserve inside his realm, Mordor. Their very presence means that the Ring-Bearer, Frodo Baggins, is in grave danger and might be unable to fulfil his mission of destroying the One Ring.

As a result, a diversion needs be made and Aragorn is determined to march against the Black Gate, although the odds are overwhelmingly against the forces of good.
9. Gimli the dwarf states he'd never imagined he would die side by side with an elf

Answer: Black Gate

As the combined forces of Gondor and Rohan stand against the Black Gate, Sauron's hordes are against them. In a moment high with tension and emotion, Gimli tells Legolas the elf that he could never imagine he would die beside an elf, since elves and dwarves have very turbulent and occasionally hostile relations. Legolas asks whether Gimli would prefer to make a last stand alongside a friend, signifying that the animosity between their races does not interfere with their personal friendship. Gimli answers in the affirmative.
10. Eagles attack the Nazguls' dragon-like steeds as the One Ring gets unmade

Answer: Black Gate

The destruction of the One Ring is the end of the Dark Lord Sauron. Once the Ring is unmade, the Orcish armies turn back, only to be swallowed by giant chasms. The Eagles attack and presumably destroy the beasts ridden by the Nazgul, which are presumably also eliminated. The defeat of Sauron puts an end to the Third Age of Middle-Earth and the days of peace start.
