Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the maiden name of Paul's first wife, who was also in Wings?

Answer: Linda Eastman

Linda Eastman was born on September 24, 1941, in New York City, U.S. She married Paul McCartney on March 12, 1969, at Marylebone Town Hall in London. Linda was a vocalist and keyboard player in the band Paul McCartney formed in 1971 after The Beatles broke up.

Wings underwent several lineup changes between 1971 and 1981; however, Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine were the only original members who remained with the band throughout its existence. The band achieved success with songs such as "Silly Love Songs", "Let 'Em In", "Mull of Kintyre", and "Band on the Run", among others.

Linda McCartney was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995, and her health declined as the cancer spread to her liver. Linda died on April 17, 1998 (aged 56), in Tucson, Arizona, U.S.
2. Out of the choices given, which artist was NOT in the band Wings?

Answer: Denny Jones

Denny Jones was born on 12 March 1986 and is a British singer, songwriter, and musician, recognised as one of the lead vocalists and the principal guitarist for the pop-rock band McFly. Jones has never been a member of the band Wings. Wings broke up before Jones was born.

Denny Laine was a member from 1971 until 1981. Henry McCullough was a member from 1972 to 1973; Jimmy McCulloch was a member from 1974 until 1977.
3. Did Paul release his first solo album before the last Beatles album ("Let It Be") was released?

Answer: Yes

Paul McCartney launched his debut solo album, "McCartney", on April 17, 1970, about a month prior to the release of "Let It Be" (May 1970 in the UK). This solo album came out soon after he declared his exit from The Beatles, which essentially marked the dissolution of the band.
4. What was Wings' first album called?

Answer: Wild Life

"Wild Life" marks the first studio album released by the British-American rock band Wings. It was released on 7 December 1971. All the songs on the album were written by Paul and Linda except "Love is Strange", which was a joint effort between Mickey Baker, Sylvia Vanterpool, and Bo Diddley.

The album wasn't the best from McCartney as you would normally expect. The critics rejected the album, criticising it as hurried and insubstantial. The fans responded with indifference - it only reached number ten on the US albums chart and eleven on the UK albums chart.
5. What was Wings' biggest hit in the UK?

Answer: Mull of Kintyre

Wings' most renowned song is widely regarded as "Mull of Kintyre", which was released on 11 November 1977. The song achieved remarkable success in the UK, becoming the first single to surpass two million copies. "Mull of Kintyre", was written by Paul McCartney and Denny Laine.

Chart wise the song was an international hit topping the charts in several counties, although it struggled in the US.
6. Wings featured on the soundtrack for a "James Bond" film. What was the title of the song which was also the name of the film?

Answer: Live and Let Die

"Live and Let Die" was released on 1 June 1973. The song was composed by McCartney and his wife Linda. "Live and Let Die" was the first genuine rock and roll track to serve as the opening song for a Bond movie. It achieved significant success, reaching number nine on the UK charts and number two in the US, where it stayed for three weeks.

The song was nominated for an Academy Award but was ultimately beaten by "The Way We Were".
7. In 1973 Wings released their third studio album. The album had the songs "Helen Wheels", "Jet" and "Let Me Roll It". What was the name of this album?

Answer: Band on the Run

"Band on the Run" was released on 30 November 1973. All the songs on the album were written by Paul and Linda apart from the track "No Words", which was written by Paul and Denny Laine. On this album there were only three members in the band: Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, and Denny Laine. The drummer for the band, Denny Seiwell, and guitarist Henry McCullough had left the group.
8. In April 1981, Denny Laine said he was leaving the band. What was the reason Denny gave for his departure?

Answer: There were no plans for more tours

Brian Frederick Hines was born on 29 October 1944, although we know him by his professional name Denny Laine. Before Denny joined Wings, he was a member of the band The Moody Blues from 1964 to 1966. When Denny left The Moody Blues, he had short spells with the Electric String Band, a band called Balls which he formed with Trevor Burton, and also performed with the band Ginger Baker's Air Force in 1970.

Denny was a key member in the band Wings; he not only performed as the lead guitarist but also played the bass guitar, rhythm guitar, provided lead and backing vocals, and contributed on keyboards and woodwind instruments. Additionally, he participated in writing and co-writing several of the band's songs.

Paul McCartney said the reason why he no longer wanted to go on tour any more with Wings was because of the death of John Lennon. Paul and John were both in the band The Beatles. Following the assassination of John Lennon, Paul experienced a deep emotional impact, with various reports suggesting that it raised considerable security issues and reduced his inclination to engage in extensive public tours.
9. In 1976, Wings released a live album that featured the name of a country. What was the full title of the album starting with "Wings Over"?

Answer: Wings Over America

"Wings over America" is a three-disc live album released on 10 December 1976. The recordings were made during the band's American tour dates as part of their 1975-76 Wings Over the World tour.

Not only did band sing Wings songs, they also included a few of The Beatles hit songs like "Yesterday", "Lady Madonna", and "The Long and Winding Road". One thing that has puzzled me about this live album. McCartney's sound engineer reviewed 800 hours of recordings and picked the top five performances of each song from the 30-song line-up. McCartney then selected and mixed the final collection of tracks, primarily from the June 23 concert.

The live recordings subsequently underwent studio overdubs in October and November 1976. As stated by Wings drummer Joe English, it took an extensive amount of time to prepare the "Wings over America" tapes for the live album. "We needed to enter the studio to overdub the majority of the backing vocals."

So is this really a live album? In my opinion live should mean live and not reworked.
10. Is it true that the 1976 live album was the first triple album to reach the number one position in the US Billboard Top LPs chart?

Answer: yes

"Wings over America" reached the pinnacle of the Billboard 200 chart in the early months of 1977. It marked the band's fifth consecutive album to achieve the number-one position in the United States. In the UK the album stalled at number eight on the UK Albums Chart.

Over the years the album has seen several new and reworked releases. One of these was the reissue on 27 May 2013 as part of the Paul McCartney Archive Collection. The reissue coincided with the exclusive edition of the "Maybe I'm Amazed" EP for Record Store Day. Furthermore, "Rockshow" was released again, this time on DVD and Blu-ray, its audio remixed into 5.1, on 10 June 2013.

"Rockshow" is a concept film about the Wings tour between 1975 and 1976; it covers performances in Seattle, New York, and Los Angeles.
