Marc Bolan, real name Mark Field, was born in Homerton, London, in 1947. He founded Tyrannosaurus Rex in the summer of 1967. Bolan was both lead vocalist and lead guitarist with the band.

On September 16th, 1977, Marc Bolan was a passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend, and fellow band member, Gloria Jones. The car hit a tree in Barnes, London and Bolan was pronounced dead at the scene. He was just 29 years old, and his death also meant the end for T. Rex, despite later attempts by former band members to resurrect the name.
