Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the Manchester United and Wales footballing legend who was born in Cardiff on 29th November 1973?

Answer: Ryan Giggs

"Giggsy" has always been very proud of his Cardiff roots, despite the fact that he moved to Manchester as a youngster when his dad, Danny Wilson, moved there to play professional rugby league for Swinton.

Bobby Charlton is English, George Best was from Northern Ireland, and Eric Cantona is French - all Manchester United legends as well!
2. Formerly known as the Cardiff Arms Park, this ground was redeveloped in time to host the 1999 World Rugby Cup Final. It has hosted Welsh football internationals, as well as a number of English domestic cup finals. What is the massive stadium in the middle of Cardiff called?

Answer: The Millennium Stadium

The "Millstad" as it's known locally holds 73,000 people. It has a fully retractable roof, and when it's full, and the roof is on, and Wales are playing at home - it's utterly awe inspiring! Built in time for the 1999 World Cup rugby Final, it hosted a number of FA Cup finals early in the 21st Century as Wembley, in London, was being redeveloped.

It is literally right in the middle of Cardiff city centre - therefore very easy to get to, with great facilities on its doorstep.
3. Paulo Radmilovic is a famous Cardiffian, who made quite a splash with his record breaking feats at the Olympics. Where did "Raddy" win his four Olympic Gold Medals?

Answer: In a pool

Paulo won Gold in the 1908 London Olympics in both the 4 x 200m relay and as part of the Water Polo team. Further Water Polo Golds followed in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, and the 1920 Games in Antwerp. In all, he competed in 5 consecutive games from 1908 to 1928 - it would undoubtedly have been 6 games if the 1916 event hadn't been cancelled due to World War I.

In 1967, a year before he died at the grand old age of 92, Paulo Radmilovic was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Florida - only the second Briton to be given the honour. The first was Captain Matthew Webb - honoured for being the first man to swim the English Channel.
4. What is the name of the ground that Cardiff City moved to in 1910? It was named after the son of a Marquess.

Answer: Ninian Park

Named after Ninian Stuart, the son of the Third Marquess of Bute, Cardiff City moved to Ninian Park in 1910. Prior to that, they had played at Sophia Gardens, near the Glamorgan Cricket Ground. It has been the site of many famous victories for the club, none more so than the 1-0 defeat of Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners Cup in 1971.
5. Which of these sports is NOT played regularly at international level in the temperate city of Cardiff?

Answer: Ice Hockey

Although Cardiff enjoys playing host to British Elite Hockey League side Cardiff Devils, Wales doesn't have it's own "national" ice hockey side. The Wales soccer team regularly plays matches at the Millennium Stadium, whilst Glamorgan's SWALEC Stadium at Sophia Gardens has been staging international cricket matches since the 1990s.

British Baseball is a slight variation on the North American version - the main difference being in the scoring, and the way the innings are configured. It is played almost exclusively in the ports of Cardiff and Newport in Wales, and in Liverpool. Every year, a Wales v England international takes place - in South Wales (usually in Cardiff) and on Merseyside alternatively.
6. Which of these European Tour Golf professionals is from Church Village, near Cardiff? His dad was a famous rugby international.

Answer: Sion Bebb

Sion Bebb was born in Church Village, before moving to Brynsadler, near Pontypridd. He is the son of former Wales and British Lions rugby union legend, Dewi Bebb. You can find out more about Sion on his website - www.sionbebb.com - where he keeps a regular blog about his life as a pro golfer, and all round sports fan!

Garry Houston is from North Wales, Ian Woosnam from Oswestry, and Colin Montgomerie is from Scotland - though he does have a course at the Celtic Manor (near Newport, and home of the 2010 Ryder Cup) named after him.
7. Born in Cardiff in February 1967, this 110m hurdler reached four consecutive Olympic finals from 1988 to 2000, winning the silver medal in 1988. He won the gold medal at the 1993 and 1999 World Championships. Who is he?

Answer: Colin Jackson

Colin Jackson's Athletics CV is impressive. As well as the Olympics and World Championship medals, he was also Commonwealth Games champion twice, and set ae world record of 12.91 seconds in 1993. This was finally beaten by Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang in 2006. After retiring from Athletics in 2003, Colin joined the BBC as an athletics pundit.
8. Born in Cardiff in 1906, Maurice Turnbull was an allround sportsman who represented his country at three different sports. A successful sports administrator as well, Turnbull was killed in action in Normandy in August 1944. At which of these sports did he NOT earn international honours? Please don't make a racket if you get this one wrong!

Answer: Squash

Turnbull was a Major in the Welsh Guards when he was killed by a sniper's bullet in Montauban, Normandy. He played 9 cricket tests for England, gained 2 Welsh caps at rugby, and also represented Wales at hockey. Although he was South Wales squash champion, he never represented his country at this sport.
9. Born in Cardiff in July 1969, this lady won 11 gold medals, three silver and a bronze at the Paralympics, as well as winning the London Marathon on 6 occasions. Who is this successful Welsh athlete?

Answer: Tanni Grey-Thompson

4 Golds in Barcelona (1992), 1 in Atlanta (1996), 4 more in Sydney (2000) and another 2 in Athens (2004). At distances between 100m and 800m - but also a Marathon specialist, as her record in London over the same period proves. A remarkable athlete, and a great personality, as anyone who's been lucky to witness her being the life and soul of a party will testify! After she retired she became a TV presenter across a broad range of programmes.
10. Which of these world renowned sportsmen have called Cardiff "home" at some point in their sporting careers?

Answer: All three of them

West Indies cricket legend Sir Viv played for Glamorgan from 1990-1993, playing a huge part in their Sunday League triumph in 1993. South African Jacques Kallis also played for Glamorgan, having a very successful season with them in 1999.

Jonah Lomu, the All Black rugby player, appeared 10 times in the Cardiff Blues jersey in the 2005-06 season, sadly breaking his ankle in the last of these games. That was to prove to be his last ever competitive first class rugby match.
