Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. RUGBY UNION: Which of these scoring methods would give a team an even number of points?

Answer: Conversion kick after a try

Both a drop goal and penalty kick score three points and a try is worth five. After a try is scored, a kick at goal can be taken to 'convert' the try. If successful, this adds a further two points (for a total of seven).
2. SNOOKER: Potting which colour ball from these options will add an even number of points to your score?

Answer: Brown

The game of snooker begins with 22 balls on the table - fifteen red, six colours and the white cue ball. Each red scores one point and potting a red means the player can try to pot a coloured ball. The colours (and their values) are yellow (two), green (three), brown (four), blue (five), pink (six) and black (seven).

The maximum break (points scored in a series of shots without missing any pots) is 147, achieved by potting all the reds, followed by a black each time, and then the coloured balls in order of their points value.
3. CRICKET: England's one day tournament, known originally as the Gillette Cup, was played over how many overs between 1964 and 1998 inclusive?

Answer: 60

In its inaugural season, the competition was played over 65 overs, but reduced to 60 the following year and remained at 60 until 1999 when it was reduced to 50. It stayed at 50 until the competition's final season in 2009, when it was replaced by a new 40 over per side tournament.

The competition was played between county sides, with Lancashire being the most successful, accumulating seven wins. Gillette were the first sponsors and Friends Provident the final one.
4. SHOWJUMPING: a penalty of four points is applied if a horse knocks down a fence or refuses to jump. What are these called?

Answer: Faults

The horse and rider are given four faults for knocking down a fence, or a pole forming part of it, for the horse putting part of its hoof in the water at a water jump or for a first refusal at a fence. If the horse refuses a second time, the rider is eliminated and a fall will also lead to elimination.

The only faults which can be non even are time faults, where the rider takes too long to finish the course. These vary depending upon how much over the allotted time the round takes.
5. FOOTBALL/SOCCER: At the end of of the match in the 1966 FIFA World Cup final, which team had scored an even number of goals?

Answer: Both teams

It may be a long time ago, but as it's the only time (up to 2020) that England has won the trophy, the event is still part of the UK's collective memory. At full time, 90 minutes, the scores were level at two goals each, thanks to an equalising goal scored by West Germany with a minute left.

After extra time, the score was 4-2 to England, with Geoff Hurst scoring two goals in this period to give him a hat trick in the match.
6. TENNIS: In 2019, Wimbledon introduced a final set tie-breaker. At which score in the final set is the tie-break played?

Answer: 12-12

Wimbledon, being a bastion of tradition, resisted final set tie-breaks for some time. Two matches effectively caused a change of heart. In 2010 the match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut took three days to finish with the final set eventually being won by Isner 70 games to 68.

In 2018 Isner was again involved with his semi-final match against Kevin Anderson being won by Anderson 26-24 in the final set. Anderson was unable to recover sufficiently and lost the final to Novak Djokovic. Tie-breaks are normally played at six games each, but Wimbledon has opted for 12-12 for the final set only.
7. FORMULA ONE RACING: In 2010 a new points scoring system was introduced for motor racing's F1 races. Excluding any bonus point for the fastest lap, finishing in which of these positions will gain an even number of points?

Answer: Second

The scoring system for Formula One has been changed several times, but the system adopted in 2010 set the points at 25 for a win, 18 for second, then 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and one for third to tenth place inclusive. Any driver can gain a bonus point if he sets the fastest lap during the race.

In 2019 Lewis Hamilton became world champion with a points tally of 413 with his team mate, Valtteri Bottas, finishing second with 326.
8. DARTS: on a standard dartboard the number twenty appears at the top of the board, or 12 o'clock. Which even number appears at 3 o'clock?

Answer: 6

The darts board is designed so that high scoring numbers are dispersed around the board with lower scoring numbers either side of them. Twenty is at the top, with the numbers five and one either side meaning that casual players are likely to hit one of these instead.

The professionals, of course, are much more skilful with the best scoring 180 points with three darts, the highest possible, regularly. Six appears on the right hand side of the board with eleven directly opposite at the 9 o'clock position.
9. GENERAL: In which of these sports is the maximum number of players allowed on the field of play for either team an even number?

Answer: Australian rules football

A field hockey team has eleven players - the goalkeeper and ten outfield players. Baseball has nine players and basketball has five. Australian rules has a team of 22 players, although only 18 of them can be on the field of play at any one time. It resembles rugby in many ways, with an oval ball being used and physical contact, but the field of play is much larger.

The ball is moved around by kicking and running with the object being to kick it through the goal posts for maximum points.
10. GOLF: A par score on a championship golf course is normally which of these?

Answer: 72

A par of 72 is by far the one you are most likely to come across. Championship courses tend to have mostly par-4 holes, meaning professional players should take that number of strokes from the tee to holing the ball. Four holes are likely to be par-five with a further four being par-three. A score under par is what every player wants, while hitting more than par is less welcome.
