On 16th March 2025, Newcastle United played Liverpool in the League Cup Final (also known as the Cup). They had had a successful season under . Liverpool, under new manager , were top of the Premier League; at their last meeting with Newcastle, on 25th February, they had won 2-0. While Liverpool had one of the largest trophy hauls in English football, Newcastle had not won a domestic trophy since , when they won the FA Cup Final 3-1 vs. Manchester City. Their last trophy win of any kind had been the now defunct in , against Ujpesti Dosza, a Hungarian team.

In the League Cup Final the statuesque , later voted Man of the Match, scored Newcastle's first goal in the minute, while Sweden's got their second early in the second half. Although managed to nab a goal for Liverpool in the minute, it was small consolation for the Reds as Newcastle hung on to win the final 2-1.

Former Newcastle legend and Geordie singer were among the famous Newcastle fans who celebrated. Captain was moved to tears in his post-match interview, local boy drank beer from the trophy, and the team celebrated by drenching their manager with champagne.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Newcastle had been resurgent under Eddie Howe, appointed in November 2021, and were aspiring to a place in the UEFA Champions League. They had previously knocked out Wimbledon, Chelsea, Brentford and Arsenal (who they beat 4-0 on aggregate). Dan Burn, a local boy and childhood Newcastle fan, had been called up for England two days earlier by new manager Thomas Tuchel, and opened the scoring when he headed in Kieran Trippier's corner. Oscar Isak made it 2-0 and Newcastle held on, although the second half became nervier when Chiesa's goal, in stoppage time, was given after a long period of deliberation.

Wembley Stadium was a sea of black and white and 'The Blaydon Races', Newcastle's theme song, rang out after the match. Bruno Guimaraes said that it was one of the best days of his life, and the suspended Anthony Gordon joined in with the celebrations. One particularly passionate Newcastle fan opened a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale that a Liverpool fan had given him back in 1996; he had been storing it for 29 years, promising not to open it until Newcastle won a trophy!

Earlier in the week, Liverpool had been knocked out of the Champions League on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain, despite a heroic performance by goalkeeper Alisson in the first leg. However, although the Reds lost the League Cup Final, they won the 2024-25 Premier League title at a gallop, with the title officially confirmed on 27th April, when they thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield.
