James Burrows began his career on Broadway. He met Mary Tyler Moore while he was working as an assistant stage manager in 1967's "Holly Golightly". The Broadway play never made it past rehearsals. Years later, James wrote Mary a note asking if she had any work for him. James directed four episodes of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and eleven episodes of "The Bob Newhart Show", both under the MTM production label.
James won his first two Emmys directing episodes of "Taxi". He created the NBC series "Cheers" with the Charles brothers and directed 35 out of the 275 episodes. He won two more Emmys for directing "Cheers".
