Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tora Ziyal

Answer: Cyia Batten

Tora Ziyal was a love child of Gul Dukat and Tora Naprem. During the Cardassian occupation, Dukat sent Ziyal and Naprem to Lissepia. However, their transport was shot down by the Breen and Naprem was killed. Ziyal was then sent to a Breen dilithium mine as a slave.

Years later, Dukat and Kira Nerys found out that Ziyal was still alive. They rescued her, and she chose to live on Cardassia with her father. However, life there was difficult, as she was shunned and Dukat's Cardassian family left him and he was demoted. Ziyal then moved to DS9. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Indiscretion")

During the Dominion War, she stayed on the station after it was re-occupied by the Cardassians/Dominion. She aided the resistance by helping Quark break Kira, Leeta, Rom, and Jake out of prison. Just as the Federation forces were coming to the station to regain control of it, Ziyal admitted her crimes to her father Dukat and told him goodbye. Overhearing this, Dukat's assistant, Damar, killed her on the spot. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Sacrifice of Angels")

Tora Ziyal was portrayed by three actresses in nine episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine": Cyia Batten (2 times), Tracy Middendorf (1 time), and Melanie Smith (6 times).
2. Sutra

Answer: Isa Briones

Sutra was a female Coppelius android and the twin sister of Jana. She was created by Doctors Bruce Maddox and Altan Soong at Coppelius Station. She had a similar appearance to two other "cousin" androids - Dahj and Soji - but had a gold tint to her skin instead of the human appearance of her cousins.

She sought to have her planet's synths protected from Romulans and Organics in general. She chose violent means, including murdering Sana, setting a Romulan operative, Narek, free, and holding Jean-Luc Picard in custody. When Dr. Soong discovered her deceptions, he deactivated her. ("Star Trek: Picard" episodes "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1" and "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2")
3. Mirasta Yale

Answer: Carolyn Seymour

Mirasta Yale was a Malcorian astronomer and scientist. She oversaw the Malcor III Space Bureau, which had just developed a warp drive that had not yet been tested. Starfleet observers, who had been established on Malcor III, were preparing to make first contact with the government once their warp drive was shown to be viable. But two situations were interfering with normal first contact procedures. First, other ministers were hesitant in developing interstellar travel so quickly. Second, Commander Riker was missing amongst the population. He had been liaising with the Starfleet observers, but suffered some sort of accidental injury and was taken to a hospital, where his alien-to-Malcorian-doctors physiology was discovered.

After Riker is found and his injuries healed, the Malcorian Chancellor Durken decides that Malcor III is not ready to join the galactic society. So, he halted funding for the warp drive project. Yale, who was disappointed in this decision, asked Picard if she could leave with the Enterprise. He agreed, and has quarters assigned to her. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "First Contact".)
4. Enina Tandro

Answer: Fionnula Flanagan

Enina Tandro was the wife of General Ardelon Tandro during the Klaestron Civil War. She was having an affair with Curzon Dax, a diplomat to Klaestron IV and friend of General Tandro. General Tandro was killed after rebels received classified information that compromised the government's forces.

Years later, after Curzon died and Dax was transferred to Jadzia, information came to light that General Tandro was killed because of leaked classified information. Evidence points to Curzon Dax as the one who passed on this information, and the Klaestron authorities wanted to prosecute Dax, no matter who its host was. However, at the time this data was transmitted, Curzon and Enina were together in their illicit affair. But Jadzia didn't want to ruin Enina's reputation and wouldn't dispute the charges. Finally, Enina, realizing her love for Dax, no matter its host, overrode her reputation, confessed that Curzon was with her and couldn't have sent the data. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Dax")
5. Mareel

Answer: Megan Gallagher

After Verad is caught and Dax is returned to Jadzia, Verad awakens very shaken up. His personality went back to his former meeker self, but with continued anxiety. Mareel's devotion to Verad returned, with her promising to never leave his side. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Invasive Procedures")
6. Trelane's Mother

Answer: Barbara Babcock

Trelane's Mother was, of course, the mother of Trelane. Trelane was a member of what we could come to believe was the Q continuum who was still in his young, immature phase. He was allowed by his parents to create a planet, Gothos, in order to interact with passing humanoids. However, he became abusive in "playing" with Captain Kirk. When it became apparent that he intended to kill Kirk, both of Trelane's parents intervened.

Trelane's parents appeared as translucent green blobs. They chastised Trelane, first his father by telling him that he was disobedient and cruel, then his mother told him that if he couldn't take proper care of his pets, he could not have them at all. Trelane started whining, to which his father said, "Stop that nonsense at once, or you will not be permitted to make any more planets!"

Trelane's parents sent Trelane away, then addressed Captain Kirk. They said he must forgive their child, and the fault was theirs in that they indulged him too much. They wouldn't have let Trelane intercept the Enterprise had they realized how vulnerable Humans really were. ("Star Trek" episode "The Squire of Gothos")
7. Nurse Garland

Answer: Megan Gallagher

Nurse Faith Garland was a US Army nurse. She was assigned to the team that were investigating three aliens who had crash-landed in Roswell, NM in 1947. At first, they could not communicate with the aliens. But one of them borrows a hairpin from her, and he uses it as a tool to reset their universal translators, which are implanted in the ear canals of the aliens.

The aliens turn out to be Quark, Rom, and Nog. They were travelling to Earth to deliver Nog to Starfleet Academy. The ship they were using was one that Quark's cousin Gaila owed him for a decade. Rom had checked it out to make sure it was of quality. But he didn't find any defects. However, Gaila had sabotaged the ship, making it stuck in warp drive. Rom figured he could use plasma to react with kemocite that Quark had intended to smuggle to Orion, and the reaction of the two would shut down the warp core. But it had an unfortunate side effect of creating a time warp back to Earth's 20th century.

Nurse Garland was sympathetic towards the Ferengi. She objected to the military higher-ups' treatment of the aliens, using truth serum (ineffectively) and threats of torture. She and her fiancé freed the Ferengi and helped them get back to their ship, where Rom could use the remaining kemocite and beta radiation from an atomic bomb test to return them to the 24th century. Garland later explained that the aliens used their mind-control powers to force her to help them. The general in charge of the team then amended their findings: they had simply found a crashed weather balloon. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Little Green Men")
8. Jaryn

Answer: Megan Gallagher

Lieutenant Jaryn was a Lokirrim female officer serving under Captain Ranek. Their race was at war with photonic beings, which included holograms of different designs. They attacked the Delta Flyer when they detected Voyager's EMH (The Doctor) on board. The other occupants were Harry Kim and Seven of Nine. To save the Doctor, Seven downloaded his program into her cortical implant. This gave The Doctor control of her body and allowed him to feel organic sensations for the first time.

The Doctor, in the body of Seven, tried to convince Jaryn that not all photonics are bad. His opportunity came when Ranek was injured, and The Doctor (returned to his mobile emitter) operated on Ranek and saved his life. This prompted Jaryn to reevaluate her opinions of holograms. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Body and Soul")
9. Juliana Tainer

Answer: Fionnula Flanagan

Juliana Tainer was an android built by Dr. Noonien Soong to take on the identity of his wife, Juliana Soong. Juliana Soong was gravely injured when she and Noonien fled from Omicron Theta colony when it was attacked by a crystalline entity.

The android Juliana was built on Terlina III, where Dr. Soong fled after the Omicron Theta attack. Upon activating the Juliana android, a recording of Noonien told Data, "she looked up at me and smiled. She recognized me. It had worked! Here was a life not two minutes old, and as far as she knew I was her husband. She'd just recovered from a terrible injury. It was incredible." Noonien kept her true nature a secret from the Juliana android. Though she loved Noonien just as the original Juliana, she left him when she realized his work was just as important to him as his marriage to her.

After leaving, she settled on Atrea IV, where she met and married scientist Pran Tainer. The two of them were assigned to the project of re-liquifying the core of Atrea IV. The USS Enterprise-D came to Atrea IV, where Data met Juliana for the first time, since his formative memories on Omicron Theta had been erased. She said she was Data's mother, in that she'd been Noonien Soong's partner in creating the Soong-type androids. In working with Juliana, Data suspected that she was an android. He noticed her blinking pattern was following the same mathematical formula that his blinking followed. Also, when they played a string instrument performance together, he noted that her performance was exactly like her practice.

When Data and Juliana were in a dangerous situation in a subterranean cavern on Atrea IV, they needed to jump down a large cliff. She hesitated, but he pushed her off, knowing that her body was not biological. However, she landed poorly, which exposed some of her internal workings. She was programmed to shut down if her true nature was exposed.

Examining her while she was shut down, LaForge found a chip with a holographic interface. Data played the hologram on the holodeck. It was of Dr. Noonien Soong, who explained Juliana's existence, that she was designed to appear fully human, including aging and dying. His wish was that she not be told the truth and allowed to live out a normal human lifespan. Data initially struggled with Soong's request, but he eventually agreed. He replaced the chip in Juliana and sealed up her exposed android parts. She awoke with no recollection of events after she fell down the cliff. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Inheritance")
10. V'Lar

Answer: Fionnula Flanagan

V'Lar was a female Vulcan ambassador. She had negotiated several treaties between Vulcan and Andoria. She was escorted from the planet Mazar where she was investigating corruption in the Mazarite government. She had been accused of crimes and was being returned to Vulcan. ("Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Fallen Hero")
11. Taris

Answer: Carolyn Seymour

Taris was a Romulan sub-commander in the 24th century. She was in command of the warbird Haakona when her ship discovered the USS Yamato, a sister ship to the USS Enterprise-D, inside the Neutral Zone. The Yamato's captain, Donald Varley, was following clues to the location of a fabled planet called Iconia. After the Yamato found Iconia, an automated drone was launched from the planet. It attempted to link with the Yamato's computer systems. When it couldn't, it started to rewrite the Yamato computer's software. In doing so, it created an error that allowed its antimatter stores to release, which destroyed the Yamato in front of the Enterprise.

The Enterprise had downloaded the logs from the Yamato prior to its destruction. The Haakona had done so as well. Unfortunately for both ships, the downloaded data had a watered-down version of the Iconian probe's program, which started to rewrite their software, leading to the ships having similar system failures similar to the Yamato's before it exploded. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Contagion")
12. Toreth

Answer: Carolyn Seymour

Toreth was a Romulan commander in the 24th century. She was in command of the warbird Khazara. She was contemptuous of the Tal Shiar, which had had her father assassinated for speaking out against the Romula government.

The Khazara had been tasked to deliver some unidentified cargo to a freighter in the Kaleb sector. The cargo actually contained a Romulan vice-proconsul, M'ret, and his aides, who were defecting to the Federation. A Tal Shiar operative, Major Rakal, who had been assigned to accompany the cargo, was replaced by a disguised Deanna Troi, to ensure that the defectors would arrive safely into Federation hands. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Face of The Enemy")
13. Mrs. Templeton

Answer: Carolyn Seymour

Mrs. Templeton was a character from one of Captain Janeway's holodeck novels, saved under the filename "Janeway Lambda One". Mrs. Templeton was the housekeeper of Lord Burleigh's estate, and she guarded the secrets of the late Lady Burleigh. She made life at the estate difficult for Lucille Davenport (the role that Janeway played), the governess of the Burleigh children. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Cathexis")

When a species called the Bothans attacked the crew of Voyager telepathically, an image of Mrs. Templeton attacked Janeway in her quarters. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Persistence of Vision")

Carolyn Seymour enjoyed filming the scene in which her character attacks Janeway. Shortly after working on the episode, the actress said, "Recently, we actually shot a scene where we had a cat fight. One of the directors wanted to take it out but we are hoping we can keep it in, and I think we will get to. It was really good and we enjoyed shooting it."
14. Dahj Asha

Answer: Isa Briones

Dahj Asha was a Coppelius android, one of two created by Bruce Maddox and Altan Soong on Coppelius in the late 24th century. Both Dahj and her sister Soji were designed to go undercover amongst humans to investigate the truth behind why synthetics conducted an attack on Mars in the Earth year 2385. Both were given false identities, along with evidence that they'd both grown up as human girls. Their memories were modified so that they believed they were human and not synthetic beings.

Dahj was living in Boston, Earth. She had been accepted to the Daystrom Institute as a research fellow in artificial intelligence and Quantum consciousness. As she was celebrating with her boyfriend, Caler, at her apartment, they were attacked by Romulan assassins. Caler was killed almost immediately, but Dahj began fighting off the assassins with combat skills that she didn't know she had. She killed the attackers, then began having visions, one of which was of Jean-Luc Picard.

She headed to Château Picard in France. Upon her arrival, she explained what had happened to her and her feeling that she would be safe with him.

She was later killed when Romulan assassins found both her and Picard in San Francisco. She protected Picard with her combat skills. However, one of the assassins had spat a corrosive liquid on her and the phaser rifle she had taken from them. The liquid managed to compromise the rifle's mechanism, making it explode and destroyed Dahj. ("Star Trek: Picard" episode "Remembrance")
15. Soji Asha

Answer: Isa Briones

Soji Asha was a Coppelius android, one of two created by Bruce Maddox and Altan Soong on Coppelius in the late 24th century. Both Soji and her sister Dahj were designed to go undercover amongst humans to investigate the truth behind why synthetics conducted an attack on Mars in the Earth year 2385. Both were given false identities, along with evidence that they'd both grown up as human girls. Their memories were modified so that they believed they were human and not synthetic beings.

Soji was placed at the Borg Reclamation Project, a derelict Borg cube where the staff was working on awakening the drones one by one and helping them to regain their biological identities. ("Star Trek: Picard" episodes "Maps and Legends" and "The End is the Beginning")
16. Irina

Answer: Cyia Batten

Irina was a Terrellian pilot in the Delta Quadrant who was involved in the Antarian Transstellar Rally, an impulse-drive-only race that was held as the first peaceful cooperative activity between four formerly warring factions. She became friendly with Tom Paris and Harry Kim when the Delta Flyer rescued her ship after an impromptu drag race. During the race, her co-pilot Joxom was electrocuted, and Ensign Kim became her new co-pilot.

The two then begin to develop a relationship. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Drive")
17. Navaar

Answer: Cyia Batten

Navaar was a female Orion, supposedly a slave, but in actuality was the one in charge of a mission to infiltrate the crew of the USS Enterprise (NX-01). She and her sisters were gifted to Captain Archer by an Orion privateer, Harrad-Sar. Once aboard the Enterprise, they plied the male members of its crew, using pheromones to weaken the men's will. Only Commander Tucker was immune, since he was in a committed relationship with T'Pol. ("Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Bound")
18. Mea 3

Answer: Barbara Babcock

Mea 3 was a delegate for the High Council of Eminiar VII. She had greeted a landing party from the USS Enterprise that had transported down to the planet. She said that they were in grave danger, which is why the Enterprise was warned to stay away from their planet. (The Enterprise had been ordered by Ambassador Fox to establish diplomatic relations, no matter what.) Shortly thereafter, an attack had been received from the third planet of their star system, Vendikar (Eminiar III). Not feeling any explosions or detecting any radiation, Kirk is mystified about this attack. Spock then deduces that Eminiar VII's war with Vendikar is conducted by computer. Wherever a computer attack is recorded, the people who were in that area are required to report to disintegration stations where their deaths are recorded. In this particular attack, the Enterprise, in orbit of Eminiar VII, has also been flagged as a casualty. The Eminians demand that the crew of the Enterprise report to disintegration stations in accordance with their method of warfare.

Mea 3 was also a declared casualty and was bravely on her way to being disintegrated. Kirk and his landing party "rescued" her, then destroyed the disintegration station. They further destroyed the war computers on Eminiar VII. Kirk theorized that this disconnect of the planets' computers would break their war treaty with Vendikar, and that their enemy would be just as horrified by the prospect of a real war. He is correct. The Eminians contact Vendikar with a long-unused communications link, and with the aid of Ambassador Fox, begin peace negotiations. ("Star Trek" episode "A Taste of Armageddon")
19. Philana

Answer: Barbara Babcock

Philana was one of the Platonians, a group of long-lived aliens who had once lived on Earth and had adopted their civilization to resemble ancient Greece. They later returned to the stars and settled on a planet which had an environment where the natural foods had a substance called kironide. The kironide gave all but one of the Platonians powerful mental powers, which they used to force their only non-powerful member - Alexander - to do menial tasks.

The Platonians wanted to keep Dr. McCoy on the planet permanently, since their physical immunity had atrophied after they developed and relied on their mental powers. It was because of this that they had made a distress call. Their leader and husband to Philana - Parmen - was dying of a simple infection that his body could no longer fight. Because of Kirk's opposition to leaving McCoy, the Platonians employed their mental powers to disable the Enterprise's means of contacting Starfleet or to even leave. They also used their powers to make Kirk and Spock perform humiliating acts to their amusement. ("Star Trek" episode "Plato's Stepchildren")
20. Beta 5 Computer

Answer: Barbara Babcock

The Beta 5 Computer was the powerful computer employed by a secret agent: Gary Seven. Though Seven was a human, he was the descendant of humans taken by aliens from Earth millennia ago. Their purpose was to train a series of human agents who could be infiltrated into Earth culture in order to save Earth from its own mistakes.

The Beta 5 could do more than compute. It was a vast database of knowledge. It could intercept and decode government messages. It could create identification that would let agents infiltrate into top secret government installations. It also had a transporter chamber.

The Beta 5 had a personality that was probably a characteristic of all Beta 5 computers, one which Gary Seven would complain that he had "little love for Beta 5 snobbery".
