Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dr. McCoy's long-ago girlfriend

Answer: Nancy Crater

Nancy Crater was a former girlfriend of Dr. McCoy. They were in a relationship 12 years before McCoy became the chief medical officer on the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk.

After they broke up, Nancy married archaeologist Professor Robert Crater. The Craters were assigned to study the ruins on planet M-113. A few years after arriving, Nancy was killed by one of the last salt vampire creatures endemic to M-113. Robert Crater buried Nancy on a hill near their camp, and came around to forgive the creature.

The creature had the ability to read minds and project images to other beings, even at the same time. It took on the form of Nancy and lived with Prof. Crater. He fed it salt tablets to keep it from feeding off him.

When the Enterprise came to M-113 to re-supply the Craters and give them medical exams, Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy, and Crewman Darnell beamed down as the landing party. Upon meeting the Craters, each of the landing party saw a different Nancy: McCoy saw Nancy as she looked when they were together 12 years prior, Kirk saw Nancy as she would've appeared had she still been alive, and Darnell saw her as a young blonde woman he'd met on Wrigley's Pleasure Planet.

The M-113 creature used its mental abilities to lure others and entrance them while it used its feeding suckers on its hands to extract salt from its victims. It killed Crewman Green, then projected his image in order to transport up with Kirk and McCoy. While aboard, it followed Yeoman Rand when it saw a salt shaker on a salad platter she was delivering to Sulu. It is unsuccessful when an animate plant sensed it was not Green and reacts. The creature left, then saw Uhura. It read her mind and took on the image of a crewman that she found attractive. It talked to Uhura in Swahili, Uhura's native language. She then became entranced and was about to become one of the creature's victims when Rand and Sulu left the botany lab, which distracted the creature and broke its hold on Uhura. It then found Crewman Barnhart, which it attacked and killed. ("Star Trek" episode "The Man Trap")

Although originally thought extinct, the M-113 salt vampire is seen in a variety of other "Star Trek" productions: a stuffed specimen was seen in Trelane's castle ("Star Trek" episode "The Squire of Gothos"), a creature appeared as Mary Anne to Jack Ransom ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Veritas"), and pictures of salt vampires were seen in "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episodes "Cupid's Errant Arrow" and "An Embarrassment Of Dooplers".

Nancy Crater (or rather, the M-113 creature) was portrayed by Jeanne Bal as the image McCoy and Kirk saw. The M-113 creature itself was portrayed by Sandra Gimpel.
2. Commandant of Starfleet Academy (32nd century)

Answer: Nahla Ake

Captain Nahla Ake was a Starfleet officer in the 32nd century. She was a Human-Lanthanite with a long life expectancy typical of Lanthanites. She was selected to be the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy when she was 418 years old.

Nahla Ake was portrayed by Academy Award-winning actress Holly Hunter. She is known for voicing Mrs. Helen Parr/Elastigirl in the movies "The Incredibles" and "The Incredibles 2".
3. Leader of genetically-enhanced humans (Augments)

Answer: Khan Noonien Singh

Khan Noonien Singh (often referred to as just "Khan") was the most prominent and leader of genetically-engineered humans (known as Augments) that arose during the Eugenics Wars on Earth. He and dozens of his fellow Augments escaped justice in the 20th century, mysteriously disappearing.

They had escaped Earth in a DY-100 class spaceship, with suspended animation units keeping the Augments alive. They apparently drifted for almost three centuries until they were discovered by the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Kirk.

After a failed takeover of the Enterprise, Kirk exiles Khan and the surviving Augments to planet Ceti Alpha V, along with the ship's historian, who had assisted Khan in his insurrection. ("Star Trek" episode "Space Seed")

Fifteen years later, Captain Terrell and Commander Chekov were investigating Ceti Alpha VI as a possible test site for the Genesis Device. Unknown to them, the planet was actually Ceti Alpha V; planet VI had exploded and caused a massive re-arrangement of the star system's planets. Khan and the surviving Augments captured Terrell and Chekov and using mind-controlling parasites caused them to lure the USS Enterprise to the system. (movie "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan")

Khan Noonien Singh was portrayed by Ricardo Montalban. Montalban is best known as the mysterious Mr. Roarke in the show "Fantasy Island".
4. First Ferengi Starfleet officer

Answer: Nog

When introduced, Nog was the mischievous nephew of Quark, who worked sporadically in his uncle's bar on Deep Space 9. He often colluded with small-time thieves on the station. But when he was caught thieving by Odo just after Commander Sisko took command of Deep Space 9, Sisko made a deal with Quark: he would release Nog, but only if Quark stayed on the station to become the core of the businesses on the Promenade. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Emissary"). Nog's father Rom later forced Nog to attend the school that was started by Mrs. O'Brien. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "A Man Alone")

Commander Sisko's son Jake became friends with Nog, since they were the only boys of mid-teen age on Deep Space 9. Jake discovered that Nog was illiterate, and he tutored him after school hours. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Nagus")

After cleaning up his act, Nog realized that he wanted more than the position that his father had, working for Quark. He wanted to become a Starfleet officer, and petitioned Captain Sisko for admission to Starfleet Academy, since Ferenginar was not a Federation member. Sisko was apprehensive about sponsoring Nog, so he set Nog with a list of menial tasks to see how committed he was. Nog performed admirably, but Sisko was still not convinced. Confronting Nog, Nog emotionally admitted that he didn't want to end up like his father in a dead-end job, and since he didn't have "the lobes" for business, he felt that being a Starfleet officer would allow him to have an impactful life. Sisko then approved Nog's application. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Heart of Stone")

Nog was portrayed by Aron Eisenberg. Though Nog was a teenage Ferengi, Eisenberg was in his mid-20s when "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" started. He had a kidney transplant when he was a teenager, which stunted his growth to just under five feet (1.52 meters). He passed away at age 50 from heart failure.
5. Communications officer under Captain Pike and Captain Kirk

Answer: Nyota Uhura

Nyota Uhura was introduced as a cadet communications officer on the USS Enterprise under Captain Pike. While aboard, she was given a commission of ensign ("Star Trek: Strange New Worlds"). Later, she became a Lieutenant under Captain James Kirk, also aboard the Enterprise ("Star Trek"). After Kirk's five-year mission, she became a commander serving at Starfleet Command ("Star Trek III: The Search for Spock"). Her final service until her retirement was command of the USS Leondegrance ("Star Trek: Picard" episode "The Star Gazer" commemorative plaque).

Nyota Uhura was portrayed by Nichelle Nichols in "Star Trek" and all the movies and shows based on it. She was portrayed by Celia Rose Gooding in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds".

Her first name, Nyota, was not given as canon in the early "Star Trek" productions. However, in the book "Star Trek II Biographies" by William Rotsler, she is given the first name Nyota, which means "star" in Swahili. It was often used in "Star Trek" novels after that. It became canon in the movie "Star Trek" (2009) when Spock called her by this name.

Whoopi Goldberg found Nichols's portrayal of Uhura inspiring as a child. Goldberg recalled that when she saw Uhura on-screen for the first time, she ran out of the room, telling everyone in her house, "I just saw a black woman on television; and she ain't no maid!"
6. First child born on USS Voyager while in the Delta Quadrant

Answer: Naomi Wildman

Naomi Wildman was the first child born on USS Voyager when it was in the Delta Quadrant. (She was one of only two children mentioned as being born on Voyager.) Her mother, Ensign Samantha Wildman, was unknowingly pregnant when Voyager was taken by the Caretaker. Naomi's father was Samantha's husband, Greskrendtregk, a Ktarian. Thus, Naomi's forehead had small horns, which complicated her birth. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episodes "Elogium" and "Deadlock")

Naomi Wildman was portrayed mainly by Scarlett Pomers in 16 episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager". She was also portrayed by Emily Leibovitch as infant Naomi ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Deadlock"), toddler Naomi ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Mortal Coil"), and alternate timeline adult Naomi by Vanessa Branch ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Shattered").

Ironically, Naomi appeared 19 times in "Star Trek: Voyager", yet her mother, Samantha (a Starfleet officer), only appeared 8 times.
7. Bajoran freedom fighter; became commander of Deep Space 9

Answer: Kira Nerys

Major (later Colonel) Nerys was the Bajoran Liaison officer aboard Deep Space 9 from the time that Cardassians abandoned it (when it was called Terok Nor) to when Captain Sisko disappeared, presumedly to be with the Prophets. She then became its commanding officer. She had been a resistance fighter during the Cardassian occupation, performing terroristic attacks on the Cardassians. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

She was well-acquainted with Shaxs, a fellow Bajoran resistance fighter. She and he caught up with their debts to each other when the USS Cerritos came to Deep Space 9 to negotiate with the Gamma Quadrant race, the Karemma. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Hear All, Trust Nothing")

In the Mirror universe, the mirror-Kira Nerys was the Intendant of the Alliance space station Terok Nor, the Alliance being between the Klingons and the Cardassians. Her second-in-command was Elim Garak. Her station was staffed with Terran slaves, whom she executed on random whims. She was sexually hedonistic, enjoying the company of both males and females. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Crossover")

Kira Nerys was portrayed/voiced by Nana Visitor.
8. Talaxian trader who joined USS Voyager's crew

Answer: Neelix

Neelix was a mostly-Talaxian (7/8 Talaxian, 1/8 Mylean) hybrid who lived in the 24th century. He had witnessed various ships being brought to the Caretaker's array, for what purpose he did not know. When the USS Voyager was brought there and most of its crew released, Captain Janeway contacted him to see if he knew anything about the planet, Ocampa, to which the Caretaker was sending energy bursts. He escorted them to Ocampa under the guise of helping them. He actually used them to help free a young Ocampa, Kes, to whom he'd become enamored. He eventually did help them find their two missing crew members - Harry Kim and B'Elanna Torres.

After Voyager made the fateful decision to destroy the Caretaker's array after he died (to keep it out of the hands of the Kazon), he and Kes volunteered to join them, realizing that they had no knowledge of what lay ahead of them on their journey back to the Alpha Quadrant. Neelix served as the ship's chef, morale officer, trade negotiator, "ambassador to the Delta Quadrant", and navigator, in addition to forming close personal friendships with many crew members and becoming a valuable member of the stranded Starfleet crew. Kes also became a crucial part of the crew, becoming a nurse-level assistant to the Doctor, the Emergency Medical Hologram.

Neelix was portrayed by Ethan Phillips. Phillips had several other appearances in "Star Trek" productions: Ferengi Dr. Ferek ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Ménage à Troi"), Nightclub maître d' (movie "Star Trek: First Contact"), and Ulis ("Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Acquisition").
9. Disgraced Starfleet cadet

Answer: Nick Locarno

Nick Locarno was a Starfleet cadet (1st class) who was the lead cadet of Nova Squadron, an elite squadron in the 2360s which included Wesley Crusher (3rd class), Sito Jaxa (2nd class), Jean Hajar (2nd class), and Cadet Joshua Albert. Locarno cajoled his fellow squadmates to attempt a Kolvoord Starburst in preparation for the upcoming graduation ceremony. The Kolvoord Starburst was a prohibited maneuver, but Locarno believed performing it would impress those watching and make them living legends. Instead, while practicing the maneuver, they crashed into each other. Four of them survived by emergency beaming out, but Cadet Albert perished. After the ensuing scandal and cover-up, the other three survivors were demoted, having their current year's credits cancelled. Locarno himself was expelled after accepting full responsibility for the mishap that killed Albert. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The First Duty")

Locarno became a civilian pilot. His resentment towards Starfleet grew over the years. He formed what he called "Nova Fleet", in reference to him being a part of Nova Squadron. He recruited lower deck personnel from various non-Federation space fleets to join him in rebelling against their commanders. He attacked these non-Federation ships with the help of their lower deckers, and transported their upper officers to Sherbal V. Nova Fleet's base of operation was the Detrion system. When Beckett Mariner became stranded on Sherbal V, Locarno "rescued" her and let her in on what he'd been doing with Nova Fleet. (When Mariner had been a first-year cadet, she hung around Nova Squadron, though not as a member.) Seeing that Locarno had a Ferengi-made Genesis device (that he was using to deter interference from alien fleets), Mariner realized that he was a bit deranged. She feigned that she was with Locarno's plans. When Locarno sent out a wide-band hail revealing his Nova Fleet, he introduced her. She then used the opportunity to let everyone listening that Locarno was a jerk, took his Genesis device, then found a Federation ship in Locarno's space dock and escaped from Locarno's base.

After chasing her down, she activated the Genesis device, so that Locarno would have to work on shutting it down and she could escape again. Locarno almost had the device deactivated until it asked for two bars of latinum (being a Ferengi device). Locarno started to curse the Ferengi who put a paywall on a bomb, but was cut short by its detonation. The Genesis effect took Locarno and the ion storm he was in and created a new planet, which the Federation named "Locarno". ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" fourth season arc)

Nicholas "Nick" Locarno was portrayed/voiced by Robert Duncan McNeill. McNeill was also known for his portrayal/voicing of Tom Paris on "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Lower Decks". Paris and Locarno had similar back stories. That was because Locarno was originally going to be a regular character on "Star Trek: Voyager". But the producers realized that using a guest character on a regular basis would mean they'd have to pay the writer of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The First Duty" royalties for every time Locarno appeared on "Star Trek: Voyager". So a new character, Tom Paris, was created, with enough differences to avoid any royalties disputes.
10. Starfleet admiral (24th century)

Answer: Alynna Nechayev

Admiral Alynna Nechayev was a Federation flag officer during the 24th century. Her main focus was on the issues arising near the Cardassian border. She had a no-nonsense attitude and clashed with notable Starfleet captains Jean-Luc Picard and Benjamin Sisko. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

Alynna Nechayev was portrayed by Natalia Nogulich.
11. Romulan Tal Shiar colonel

Answer: Narissa

Narissa was a Romulan Tal Shiar colonel in the late 24th century. Together with Commodore Oh (a Romulan spy in Starfleet), they planned the attack by synthetic beings on Mars that led the Federation to ban the creation of artificial lifeforms. ("Star Trek: Picard" episode "Broken Pieces")

Narissa was portrayed by Peyton List.
12. Non-corporeal being who experimented on USS Enterprise-D's crew

Answer: Nagilum

Nagilum was a non-corporeal immortal being that lived outside the universe and could not be detected by Federation sensors.

The USS Enterprise-D encountered Nagilum when it was on a charting mission in the Morgana Quadrant. Data had detected an area of total blackness, devoid of matter and energy. Ensign Crusher said he could detect the boundaries of this blackness and could bring the ship closer. Captain Picard agreed and ordered the Enterprise closer. Then suddenly, the blackness expanded and enveloped the ship.

After some strange encounters with a twin Enterprise found in the void, the being Nagilum made itself known. Its intelligence was described as "vast", such as that at first Deanna Troi could not discern it. It had no concept of gender or death, and demonstrated telepathic and telekinetic abilities; it was also able to kill by a mere thought.

Not knowing the concept of death, it decided to kill the on-duty conn officer, Ensign Haskell, with just a mere thought. Picard angrily protests. Nagilum says it will experiment with the crew, trying out the various ways that humans can be killed. In defiance, Picard starts the ship's self-destruct to spare the crew from torture and deny Nagilum its entertainment. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Where Silence Has Lease")

Nagilum was voiced by Earl Boen.
13. Leader of one of Bajor's resistance cells during the Cardassian Occupation

Answer: Li Nalas

Li Nalas was the leader of one of Bajor's many resistance cells during the Cardassian Occupation. He was considered by many to be the greatest Bajoran resistance fighter ever.

Li had be presumed dead after he was captured by the Cardassians. However, after the fall of the occupation, Major Kira received intelligence that Li and others were still being held at the Hutet labor camp on Cardassia IV. She and Chief O'Brien led a rescue attempt and freed Li and other Bajoran captives.

Li was a humble man. His legend grew from the fact that he killed a notorious Cardassian - Gul Zarale. He had embarrassingly stumbled down a hillside and come across Zarale as the latter was exiting a lake after bathing. Both of them went for their weapons, and Li was quicker, killing Zarale with his phaser, with Zarale's body falling on top of Li. Li's cohorts found Li and Zarale prone, and assumed that Li had fought a fierce battle with Zarale, when in reality Li had shot Zarale when he was just in his underwear.

Upon his rescue, he was greeted as the hero his legend had created. He was uncomfortable with this, and tried to leave the Alpha Quadrant via the Bajoran wormhole. But before he could get through, the crew of the ship he was stowed away on found him and returned him to Deep Space 9. There, he admitted to Commander Sisko the basis for his accidental heroism. Sisko confronted Li with the unfortunate truth that Bajor needed a symbol; someone that the people could believe in because the planet was on the verge of civil war. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Homecoming")

The government of Bajor awarded Li with the title of Navarch and also gave him Kira's position as liaison officer on Deep Space 9. He was embarrassed that he was displacing Kira, but he promised Sisko that he would do his best in the position. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Circle")

Li played a pivotal role in preventing a coup d'état orchestrated by the Alliance for Global Unity. He rescued Kira from insurgents, calmed down rioters, and helped defend Deep Space 9 from an attack by General Krim and his troops. One of Krim's underlings - Colonel Day Kannu - tried to kill Commander Sisko after Krim surrendered. But Li Nalas jumped in front of the phaser fire. His last words, said to Sisko, were, "Off the hook... after all..." ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Siege")

Li Nalas was portrayed by Richard Beymer.
14. Engineering officer on USS Voyager

Answer: Susan Nicoletti

Lieutenant Susan Nicoletti was an engineering crewmember aboard USS Voyager when it was seized by the Caretaker and taken to the Delta Quadrant.

Susan Nicoletti was a background character portrayed by Christine Delgado, uncredited. She appeared in 33 episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager".
15. Klingon-Tellarite hybrid & 32nd century pirate

Answer: Nus Braka

Nustopher "Nus" Braka was a Klingon-Tellarite hybrid who operated as a pirate in the 32nd century.

Braka was portrayed by Paul Giamatti.
