"The Amazing Race 38" [1] Trivia Quiz

For this season of "The Amazing Race", things were done a little differently. Instead of racing around the world, this race course hearkened back to the creators' original inspiration for the show-- a trip for two around Europe using the complex rail system and an adventure to parts unknown. This time around, thirteen teams of two, all containing "Big Brother" cast members, would take the trip of a lifetime.

To start, teams were let off their first train in the Dutch town of Hoorn where they were tasked with hopping into a waiting cab and locating their first task at IJsbaan De Westfries. Here, racers were met with a round of bowling, only here, they needed to play like the locals by becoming the ball. With one team member shooting and the other riding a sled, racers needed to attempt to get a strike, knocking down all ten pins down the rink. The first team to do so would win an Express Pass for themselves (to use before the end of the eighth leg) and one to give to another team. The last team to do so would be burdened, further in the leg, with a Hazard-- a penalty task.

Ultimately, Kyland & Taylor won the Express Pass, giving their second to Jas and Jag shortly after. Jack and Enzo were last to finish the task, receiving the Hazard.

Answer: Soused herring

Leaving the Express Pass task, racers opened clues directing them to the official starting line at Grote Kerk in Hoorn's city center where Phil welcomed them all to the competition, gave them some words of encouragement, and sent them off on their adventure with a formal go. And with that, the teams had to locate waiting vehicles and drive themselves to the port town of Volendam. Here, while most teams located their clues and tandem bikes near the water's edge, Jack and Enzo encountered their Hazard.

For this additional penalty task, the Jersey boys needed to locate a marked food stall on the boardwalk, right next to the bikes, and eat one soused herring each. Then, they could rejoin the other teams, but only while navigating the route in a cumbersome clog bike instead of a traditional tandem bike.

Answer: Cheese

Teams found tandem bikes on the waterfront in Volendam and, riding these, they had to pedal all the way to the Edam Cheese Market. There, racers had to help the locals prepare the market for morning sales. To do this, teams went to the waterfront and caught edam cheese balls as they were thrown off the sides of boats. Once they tossed and caught thirty of these, two at a time, they could assemble them onto a traditional carrier and haul them through the market to their destination.

A completed delivery would allow them to receive their next clue and bike back to their starting point (and vehicles) in Volendam.

Answer: Greenhouse

Teams who returned their bicycles in Volendam were able to drive themselves to a clue box waiting for them a lengthy drive south in the town of Mijdrecht. Here, at Van der Wilt Gerbera's, racers would hit their first Road Block task of the competition. For this task, the selected teammate needed to be 'fresh as a daisy', and this involved heading into an extensive greenhouse the size of six football fields. Inside, they would need to hunt through forty-two varieties of flowers to pick nine of them. If racers could pay close attention to colouration and petals to match the needed flowers to their examples, they could arrange them in a display box to trade for their clue.

Jas, Eric, Izzy, Kristine, Stephanie, Joseph, Chelsie, Taylor, Simone, Lexi, Matt, Kat, and Jack completed this task.

Answer: Jack and Enzo

If teams could get their flowers in their proper spots, they could get one more clue sending them onward, by taxi, to the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. There, they could navigate their way to Phil and the mat waiting in Museumplein, right between the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, in an effort to avoid being the first team eliminated from the race.

Jas and Jag reached the Pit Stop first, moments before Tucker and Jack, winning $2,500 USD each for taking the win. Jack and Enzo, who struggled with navigation and the added Hazard, checked into the mat well after sunset and were eliminated from the race in thirteenth position.

Answer: Train

Teams left Amsterdam on their second day of the race with the instruction to head to the train station because they needed to get themselves from Amsterdam Centraal to the Czech capital city of Prague (via Germany). Getting to their next destination was the true task here as, just as with flights, racers had to navigate severe issues with delays, wrong stops, and cancelled routes. Upon arriving at Praha Station, teams had to travel via the city metro and locate their next task at Zizkov Television Tower.

Answer: Zizkov Television Tower

Reaching the Zizkov Television Tower, racers took numbers and opened clues for their Road Block for this leg, and this time, one racer needed 'a breath of fresh air'. For this task, Jas, Adam, Stephanie, Tucker, Jack, Paige, Kristine, Hannah, Kyland, Kat, Matt, and Lexi had to ascend to the top of the tallest structure in the city.

There, the selected racer had to walk out onto a narrow plank suspended two hundred fifty-five feet off the ground to collect their next clue dangling underneath. Once this was collected, they could reunite with their partner.

Answer: Goblets

Leaving the Road Block, racers had to make their way by metro and on foot to the statue of Charles IV waiting on the east side of the Vltava River next to his namesake bridge at Krizovnické Námestí. This was where teams found their first Detour of the race.

In the 'Handle With Care' Detour option, racers needed to locate Staroceská Kavárna to handle Bohemian glassware. Together, they had to transport forty-eight of these glasses, in specific colours, to three different vendors to trade for stamps. Three stamps could be handed in for a clue.

Answer: Eight

The 'Remember the Chair' task required less maneuvering and more memory as teams who elected to complete this one had to proceed to the five hundred year old pub named U Fleku. There, teams had to use the eleven village crests on a wall tapestry to identify eleven seats in Knight's Hall. With these, they could identify the names of the associated villages which they would then need to recite to a historian elsewhere in the building.

Izzy and Paige, Kristine and Rubina, Jack and Chelsie, Tucker and Eric, Hannah and Simone, Kat and Alex, Megan and Matt, and Angela and Lexi all completed this task.

Once either Detour was completed racers had to find a statue of Josef Mánes outside of the Rudolfinum to find one more clue.

Finding their last clue on the edge of the Vltava, racers had to locate Phil and the Pit Stop mat further down the river in Zofín Palace in the middle of Prague. Jas and Jag managed a second win in a row this leg, this time claiming a trip for two to Sri Lanka courtesy of Expedia as their reward.

Interestingly, while Tucker and Eric managed to accidentally skip the Detour and need to return to the race course to find and complete it, they did not manage to sink from their fourth place standing and fall to the back of the pack. Instead, the last team to arrive at the mat in this leg was Angela and Lexi who, overtaken by Megan and Matt after the last task, were eliminated in twelfth place.
