Detours of "The Amazing Race 38" Quiz

A Detour is a choice between two tasks, each with its own pros and cons. In "The Amazing Race 38", racers had to hop around Europe making these choices, and in this quiz you have to recall them. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team initially missed the race's first Detour task, in Prague, landing on the Pit Stop before completing one challenge or the other?

Answer: Tucker and Eric

After leaving the Road Block, Tucker and Eric crossed the Vltava River bound for a clue box waiting next to the statue of Charles IV but instead found the later clue box next to a statue of Josef Mánes, meant to be reached after the Detour. It led the two to head to the mat where Phil informed them that they would need to return to the race course, find the proper sequence of clues, and complete the Detour before checking in. Fortunately for them, it didn't affect their overall placement.

In the meantime, in Prague, teams needed to choose between a memory task called 'Remember the Chair' or a delivery task called 'Handle With Care', both on the east side of the Vltava River.
2. Racers collected their Detour clue in Budapest (in the race's fourth leg) from a museum dedicated to which famous Hungarian?

Answer: Harry Houdini

Finding their clue in the false bottom of a locked case in the House of Houdini, teams had to act out one way or the other, selecting either 'Juggling Act' or 'Balancing Act' for their Detour. In 'Juggling Act', racers joined a circus troupe, learning how to juggle rings back and forth. If they could juggle five rings for ten seconds between each other they could keep racing. 'Balancing Act' instead put racers into a dance troupe, learning the complex steps of a traditional Hungarian dance that had one racer placing a glass bottle on their head.
3. Visiting Dubrovnik, Croatia in Leg 5, both Detour options involved the local fishing industry.

Answer: True

Racers criss-crossed their way around the small, fortified city of Dubrovnik when they visited Croatia in Leg 5, and this meant completing Detour tasks in the Old Port. For one of these tasks, racers stayed put, using their knife skills to properly descale and fillet two monkfish based on a local fishmonger's demonstration.

The other task required a lot of moving around as teams needed to locate a massive fishing net, haul it across the city, collect a bucket of chum along the route, and drop it all off at the Old Port to get their clue.
4. Both teams that were U-Turned in Leg 5 ended up needing to go back to complete which Detour option in Dubrovnik's Old City?

Answer: 'Fisherman Haul'

Completing either the physically-demanding 'Fisherman Haul' task or the dexterity-minded 'Skin 'Em All' in Dubrovnik's Old Port, racers proceeded on foot to the first Double U-Turn of the race at a cliffside bar to determine if they would use the race mechanic or be forced to complete both sides of the preceding Detour. Jag and Jas and Joseph and Adam, working together, used this to force Izzy and Paige and Kristine and Rubina (respectively) back to complete the 'Fisherman Haul' task. Fortunately, neither was eliminated this leg despite this.
5. In the town of Ston, Croatia, racers who didn't complete the salt Detour instead needed to pull which of these local products out of the Bay of Mali Ston?

Answer: Oysters

Racers who took on the 'Pull It Up' Detour task in the town of Ston, Croatia hopped into rowboats and paddled out into the Bay of Mali Ston to locate marked buoys, and if they could get their hands on these, they could haul three of them out of the water and into their boats. Returning them, and the lines of oysters attached to them to the shore and delivering them to the chef of a nearby restaurant would get them their next clue. Anyone who didn't do this had to package salt from one of the bayside refineries.
6. Which was the only team to complete the 'Mask Maker' Detour task in Romania in Leg 7?

Answer: Izzy and Paige

Heading out into rural Romania in the race's seventh leg, teams drove into Comana Natural Park to partake in one of two Detour options. Anyone choosing 'Brick Builder' joined locals in combining clay, manure, straw, and water to make traditional mudbricks, or 'chirpici'. If they could get their hands dirty and make ten perfect bricks, the locals would approve their work and reward them with a clue. 'Mask Maker' teams instead crafted traditional masks known for warding off evil spirits. Making two to match provided examples would result in a crew if they could get the details down. Only Izzy and Paige made the mask; everyone made bricks.
7. Which team used an Express Pass to skip the Detour in Bucharest (in Leg 8)?

Answer: Kyland and Taylor

While Jas and Jag used their Express Pass on the Road Block, Kyland and Taylor used theirs on the Detour, skipping one of the two options that had teams either singing or dancing for their clues in Bucharest. Those completing 'Find the Beat' learned a complex, choreographed dance from the Transylvanian Region while those who had to 'Hold the Note' built and played pan flutes for a local expert. Three teams headed to each task, as it happened, though Kyland and Taylor didn't need to complete 'Find the Beat'.
8. In an "Amazing Race" first, how many different teams were U-Turned when they arrived in Athens in Leg 9?

Answer: Three

Arriving at Pnyka Hill underneath Athens' Acropolis in Leg 9, racers were met by a Live Double U-Turn Vote that put multiple teams in the line of fire, forcing not only Tucker and Eric to complete both sides of the Detour, but also Jas and Jag and Kyland and Taylor due to a tied revote. All three U-Turned teams were able to pass through at least one side of the Detour relatively quickly, and all three of them completed the same choice first.
9. The Detour option in Leg 9, specifically in Athens, Greece, had most teams tasting which of these local products?

Answer: Olives

Choices that teams encountered during this critical Detour involved either 'Music in the Air', which had racers locating and carrying a crank-operated piano known as a laterna to be able to play it, for money, in an Athens square, or 'Olives Everywhere', which had them matching olives to their names by taste. Because three teams were U-Turned, they had to complete both, but with that in mind, Jospeh and Adam only completed the music Detour while Izzy and Paige and Jack and Chelsie only finished the olive task.

It was the Road Block that changed everything though.
10. How many legs of the twelve presented in "The Amazing Race 38" did not feature a Detour?

Answer: Five

While every leg of this race appeared to contain a Road Block or two, Detours were not quite as plentiful this season with Legs 1, 3, 10, 11, and 12 omitting this classic race mechanic. The catch is that in a number of legs that left out the choice between two tasks, racers were instead presented with a unique alternative task type. Leg 1, for instance, had a competition for the Express Pass and the return of the Hazard; Leg 3 saw the return of the Driver's Seat; Leg 10 had a Double Road Block, and Leg 11 featured a Scramble.

Of the seven legs containing Detours, two of them had U-Turns. Two of them involved traditional folk dances and two involved playing unique instruments.
