Answer: New York lawyer who moved to Hooterville to become a farmer
Douglas was the main character in the sit-com, "Green Acres". It aired from 1965 to 1971 on CBS. The role of the big city lawyer turned farmer was played by Eddie Albert. The versatile actor was known for his work in both comedic and dramatic roles, but his most popular role was co-starring with Eva Gabor in "Green Acres".
Although Douglas thinks of himself as the normal one in Hooterville, but he is also known for his quirks, such as riding his tractor in the field while wearing his three-piece suit.
2. Eustace Haney
Answer: Salesman and con man
Eustace Haney was a character in "Green Acres" played by Pat Buttram. Born in Alabama, Buttram used his southern accent and rural roots to carve out a successful career as a character actor. He is best known for playing Gene Autry's sidekick on "The Gene Autry Show" and the grifter who sold city-slicker Oliver Douglas the farm on "Green Acres".
He was also a famous voice actor heard in animated movies like Disney's "Robin Hood", "The Aristocats," and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". He was known for his squeaky voice, which he joked developed because he didn't make it through puberty.
3. Kate Bradley
Answer: Proprietor of the Shady Rest Hotel
"Petticoat Junction" was an American sit-com that aired on CBS from 1963 to 1970. Set in Hooterville, its storyline revolved around the "Shady Rest Hotel", owned by Kate Bradley. Bradley was played by actress and comedienne Bea Benaderet. She garnered two Emmy Award nominations for her earlier role in "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show".
She also was a voice actor, portraying many female voices on several "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Toons" cartoons. She was the voice of Betty Rubble in the prime-time cartoon "The Flintstones".
Born in New York City and raised in San Francisco, she died from lung cancer in 1968 during "Petticoat Junction"'s sixth season.
4. Eb Dawson
Answer: A kind-hearted local farmhand
Eb Dawson was played by Tom Lester. Lester was born in Mississippi and graduated from college with degrees in chemistry and biology. However, his love for acting compelled him to leave graduate school and go to Hollywood. A devout Christian, he believed God was calling him to California to act.
While there, he met Paul Henning, the creator of "Green Acres" and "Petticoat Junction". Henning encouraged Lester to try out for the part of the Douglas' farmhand on "Green Acres".
The Mississippi country boy reportedly joked that the only reason he got the part was because he was the only actor there who could milk a cow.
When not filming, he would hold Christian revivals across America. After "Green Acres", Lester returned to the south and was married at the age of sixty-eight.
He died thirteen years later from complications caused by Parkinson's Disease.
5. Arnold Ziffel
Answer: A pet pig
Arnold is a Chester White pig who appears in "Green Acres". He is treated as the son of Fred and Doris Ziffel, a childless couple who live in Hooterville. Everyone, except Oliver Douglas, the New York lawyer turned farmer, accepts that Arnold is the couple's son. Arnold is known to change the TV channel, attend town hall meetings, and play checkers with the other citizens of Hooterville and win.
The pig, who was trained by Frank Inn, won three PATSY (Performing Animal Television Star of the Year) Awards in the 1960s.
6. Sam Drucker
Answer: A local shopkeeper, justice of the peace, and newspaper editor
Sam Drucker appeared in all three shows, "Green Acres", "Petticoat Junction" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" during the 1960s. He was the proprietor of Drucker's General Store. He also served as the town's notary, constable, justice of the peace, and postmaster. Sam was the editor of the "Hooterville World Guardian", the valley's only newspaper.
The level-headed Sam often played the mediator between many of the characters on the show. Drucker was played by Frank Cady. He appeared over three hundred times in one of the three shows that had a connection to Hooterville.
7. Hank Kimball
Answer: County agricultural agent
Hank Kimball, played by Alvy Moore, was the bumbling but lovable county agricultural agent on "Green Acres". Moore was born in Indiana and, after serving in US Marines in WWII, returned to the states and began an acting career. Fittingly, he made his screen debut as a quartermaster in the 1952 movie "Okinawa".
After guest-starring in several sitcoms, he made his mark as Mr. Kimball, appearing in over 140 episodes of "Green Acres". He was known for his kindness off the screen, umpiring Little League Baseball games, and being involved in church and charity events.
He loved playing Hank Kimball and proudly drove his car with a license plate that said GRNACRS.
8. Floyd Smoot
Answer: Conductor and firemen for the Hooterville train, the Cannonball
Rufe Davis played the train conductor of the Hooterville Cannonball. He played the role on "Petticoat Junction" (1963 to 1968) and made a few appearances on "Green Acres". The Oklahoma native got his start in vaudeville, traveling across America in the 30s and 40s.
He famously used train and animal sounds in his comedy routines. He also had a successful comedy radio show before becoming the overly optimistic, naive conductor on "Green Acres".
9. Joe Carson
Answer: The lazy uncle of the proprietor of the Shady Rest Hotel
Uncle Joe was the uncle of Kate, the owner of the Shady Rest Hotel. Although he considered himself an astute businessman, his get-rich-quick schemes and marketing ideas for the hotel would often lead to some sort of comedic crisis. He worked hard to get out of work. In season six, following Bea Benaderet's death, he became the sole proprietor of the Shady Rest Hotel.
Uncle Joe was played by dentist turned actor Edgar Buchanan. The character actor appeared in over one hundred films and scores of television shows. His most memorable character was Uncle Joe. He was the only cast member to appear in all 222 episodes of "Petticoat Junction". He appeared in several episodes of "Green Acres" and "The Beverly Hillbillies".
10. Ralph Monroe
Answer: A female carpenter, who is the "brother" of Alf
Alf and Ralph are siblings who work as incompetent carpenters on "Green Acres". They call themselves brothers, although Ralph is actually Alf's sister. Alf explains that he calls his sister Ralph his brother because no one would hire them if they knew she was a woman.
The carpenters very seldom completed their jobs, and when they did, they were usually done wrong. Alf was played by Sid Melton and Ralph was played by Mary Grace Canfield. Melton left the show after four seasons to star on "Make Room for Granddaddy".
After he left, Canfield occasionally appeared on the show, usually seeking a romantic relationship with one of the show's bachelor characters.
11. Sarah Hotchkiss Trendell
Answer: Operator for the Hooterville Phone Company
Sarah Hotchkiss Trendell, played by actress Maude Earle, appeared in "Green Acres" as the town's phone operator. She also made guest appearances on "Petticoat Junction" and "The Beverly Hillbillies". She was known for her role as Maude Gormely on "The Waltons" (1972 to 1979).
Her acting career began later in life when she was discovered by a talent agent while performing a play at her church. Born in 1889, she made her film debut in 1967 in the movie "Fitzwilly," starring Dick Van Dyke. She was scheduled to make her Broadway debut at the age of eighty-eight, but a fall led to a broken hip and kept her from performing.
She died at the age of ninety-five.
12. Steve Elliott
Answer: A local crop duster who married Betty Jo
Eliott was played by Mike Minor. Born in 1940, he began his career as a teenage singer before breaking into acting in 1961, when he got a role in the TV show "My Three Sons". He made his first appearance on "Petticoat Junction" in season two as the son of Selma Plout, who was a rival of Kate Bradley.
In season four, he returned to the show in the role of Steve Elliot, a pilot who crashed his plane near Hooterville. While convalescing at the Shady Rest Hotel, the pilot and Betty Jo fall in love and are married. Ironically, in real life, Minor and Linda Kay Henning, who played Betty Jo, were married. Sadly, it ended in divorce.
