Jeff's father, was a doctor, and his mother, Shirley, was a radio broadcaster. He has three siblings, two brothers, Rick and Lee, and a sister, Pamela. Jeff's brother, Rick, was killed at the age of 23 while in Morocco.

When Jeff was 17 years old, he left Pittsburgh for New York to pursue an acting career. Shortly afterwards, Jeff landed his first film role, a small part in 1974's "Death Wish", which helped give him bit parts in numerous films.
