Interestingly, Joyce is the only child of Anne and Gilbert not to be named for a family member or friend.

James Matthew Blythe is named for 'the two finest gentleman I ever knew', Captain Jim, who Anne and Gilbert befriend while making their first marital home together, and Matthew who adopted Anne.

Jem is the only surviving child of Anne and Gilbert to have been born in the 'House of Dreams'. Later on, this is used as an insult against him by his siblings.

Bertha Marilla Blythe was the only child of Anne and Gilbert who appeared as a main character in their own right in 'Rilla of Ingleside', where she lives through the experience of World War 1.
