Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In May 1991 a routine space mission launched from Earth. However, when the flight engineer returned, 10 months later, he could not go back to the country he had left. Why not?

Answer: It no longer existed

The flight engineer for the mission to the Mir Space Station was Sergei Krikalev (or Krikalyev), and the country was of course the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which no longer existed when he returned on March 25 1992.

['Europe - A History' by Norman Davies]
2. Geniophobia really does mean "the fear of your own country".

Answer: False

It means the fear of chins. (Now I'm just possibly stretching the definition of 'Interesting Information' here.)
3. The 1999 FA Cup semi-final replay between Manchester United and Arsenal was decided by a 'golden goal' scored by United's Ryan Giggs, with an incredible run. Which unlucky Arsenal player gave him the ball?

Answer: Patrick Vieira

Now immortalised in song form at Old Trafford; the lyrics of which, however, we shan't go into here, as some people disapprove of that kind of language.
4. Which was the largest nation in Europe in the year 1600 AD?

Answer: Poland-Lithuania

Until 1760 when the dual nation of Poland-Lithuania transferred control of Ukraine to the Muscovites/Russians (supposedly for 20 years - in the event the Russians appeared to think there was no great hurry). 'Germany' as such did not exist in 1600. I know a shockingly small amount about Luxembourg.
5. One of the two main female characters in Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot' is usually referred to as 'Nastasya Filipovna' in line with Russian custom. What is her rarely-mentioned last name?

Answer: Barashkov

Aglaya Yepanchin is the other main female character.
6. Which country is the most ecologically diverse on earth, having 28 of the world's 32 different climate-types (e.g. high-altitude, tropical-moist, etc.)?

Answer: Peru

Peru, due to the different climates, also has a correspondingly high level of diversity in feathered and furry things.
7. The erstwhile Formula One and Indycar driver Nigel Mansell has a connection with Luke Skywalker. Well, he may have thousands for all I know, but the one I'm referring to can be written as a word and a number.

Answer: red 5

Mansell's trademark was driving under a red 5, and Luke's callsign was 'Red Five' in the finale of 'Star Wars' or 'Star Wars: A New Hope' as we probably need to call it these days.
8. Name the philosopher who wrote: "Whatever is done from love always occurs beyond good and evil."

Answer: Friedrich Nietzsche

In, not surprisingly, 'Beyond Good and Evil'. He also wrote "In revenge and in love woman is more barbarous than man." Erm. Perhaps we should move swiftly on at this point...
9. What is the name of Asterix's postman?

Answer: Postaldistrix

Appearing in 'Asterix and the Normans', along with the Norman warriors Nescaf, Psychopaf, Epitaf, Cenotaf, Transportcaf, Chiffchaff, Riffraff, Fotograf, Caraf, Toocleverbyhaf and their fearless chief, Olaf Timandahaf.
10. Obscure 'The Simpsons' question, with hopefully a real emphasis on 'obscure' this time: In the episode 'Lisa's Wedding' Lisa is shown a vision of the future by a medium. What is the name of the dorm she is living in at college?

Answer: Dr & Mrs Dre Hall

"I specialize in foretelling the relationships where you get jerked around."
