Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My baby insists on having this noise maker in her crib. What is it called?

Answer: Rattle

Both a rattle and tambourine make noise. Most parents prefer the little child's rattle to a tambourine while in the crib. A pacifier and a blanket are a bit more quiet for nap time. A pacifier is a soft mouth piece that small children suck for comfort. Some children like to cuddle with soft blankets for warmth and comfort.
2. Welcome to Sweetwater TX. Since 1958, we're home to the largest US festival in our class attracting 30,000 people per year that involves prairie fauna. What is our claim to fame?

Answer: Rattlesnake Round-up

Sweetwater hosts the largest Rattlesnake Round-up in the USA. In these events, prizes are given for the heaviest, largest or most snakes captured. Some round-ups in Texas have resulted in over 125,000 snakes removed from the plains.
3. After graduation in 1930, my high school sweetheart Eddie and I went hand-in-hand to the local drugstore soda fountain to celebrate. We sat at the counter and had milk shakes to celebrate. What was our server called?

Answer: Soda jerk

Although a "jerk" is colloquial name for an obnoxious person, a "soda jerk" is actually a name for an industrious one. It comes from the physical action of pulling a handle to release a flavor from a container. The "jerker" would then add soda to make the drink. These individuals were later called on to use ice cream and flavorings in their mixers to blend wonderful milk shakes.

Just for fun - the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) suggests that the original term for "jerk" refers to the pulling of ale at a pub. Doesn't sound tasty mixed with ice cream, however.
4. I am the hit of the party. Everything I say is greeted with applause so my husband tells me "You must be on a ...."

Answer: Roll

"On a roll" is an American idiom meaning "in the midst of a series of successes." (McGraw-Hill Dictionary.) I must admit that I have often gone on a tangent (in conversation), binge (on chocolate) and been on a loose tether when faced with sales at the garden store (plants fear me!)
5. In 1952, the American band The Saddlemen was renamed Bill Haley and His Comets. In 1954, the band had a worldwide hit called "Shake, Rattle and Roll" which was a million copy seller and became the first American rock-n-roll song to break into the British singles chart. Which was NOT a hit for this band?

Answer: Sh-Boom

The band The Crew-Cuts placed fourth on the Billboard Chart in 1954 with their song "Sh-Boom." The Canadian quartet's name came from their popular hairstyle. The other foils were indeed songs by Bill Haley and his band.
6. "Roll over Beethoven" was a 1956 hit by Chuck Berry. His lyrics mentioned another famous classical composer known for his Christmas creation. Who is this?

Answer: Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky was known for the Christmas classic "The Nutcracker." He also is known for his original music for "Swan Lake" and (my favorite) "The 1812 Overture." (I like cannons!)
7. Perhaps you can touch the clouds when taking a ride on me. When I opened in 2014, I was the world's highest Ferris Wheel at 550 feet tall. What is my name?

Answer: High Roller

The High Roller in Las Vegas, USA was the highest Ferris Wheel in the world at 550 feet when built in 2014. The Singapore Flyer is a scant nine feet shorter, while the Chinese Star of Nanchung is 25 feet smaller. The London Eye comes in at a paltry 443 feet.

Given all this, you would not spot me on any of these rides. I can barely tolerate the step ladder to change a light bulb - 550 feet in the air...NOT!
8. First introduced in 1965 by General Mills, this flavored coating for chicken is now manufactured by Kraft Foods. Recipe - place the meat in a bag with the coating, close and shake then bake in the oven. By which name is this long-lived product known?

Answer: Shake 'n Bake

Shake 'n Bake was first introduced in the 1960s. It was known for its early ads featuring child actors who assisted their mothers in making a dinner and then proudly announced..."It's not fried. It's Shake 'n Bake - and I helped." (I vividly remember these commercials - no idea why.)
9. Welcome to Lincoln, Nebraska. In addition to being the home of the University of Nebraska's football team ("Go Big Red") and the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, which is another claim to fame for this Plains Princess?

Answer: The National Museum of Roller Skating

The National Museum of Roller Skating is the largest presentation of roller skates in the nation. It includes skates with keys, latch-on skates to shoes, and inline and hockey skates. Just for fun, it also has a display of photos on animals on skates. (OK, weird but still funny!)

Wilbur, Nebraska (pop 1,862) holds the title of "Czech Capital of the USA" by proclamation of Pres. Ronald Reagan. The road into town welcomes visitors with a sign saying "Vitame Vas" ("We welcome you" in Czech.) Located only 47 miles south of Lincoln, it is well worth the visit during the annual "Czech Festival" in early August. Parades, Polka bands, authentic Czech food, costumes and a beer garden or two. Trust me...it is fun!

The Arbor Day Foundation was founded in 1972 in Nebraska City, Nebraska and is now the largest non-profit organization dedicated to planting trees - over a million so far. The Earth and the critters appreciate the effort, I'm sure.

Buffalo Bill built a home on the 4,000 acre ranch he bought in North Platte, Nebraska at a cost of $3,900. Steep you say? Well, let's remember that this was in 1886 during the "heyday of his famous Wild West Show." A good investment, perhaps?
10. In Greek myth, Poseidon was known as the "earth-shaker." He is known for venting his anger in earthquakes and tsunamis. Where did the largest recorded earthquake occur in the 20th century?

Answer: Valdivia, Chile

In 1960, the Valdivia quake hit Chile with the strongest measurable earth tremor to date. Approximately 6,000 people perished. It was classified as 9.5 on the Richter scale.

The "Great Alaskan Earthquake" of 1964 ranked as 9.2 on the scale destroyed property, livestock and took at least 164 lives.

The 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake ranked between 9.1 and 9.3 but was responsible for the deaths of close to 240,000 people in 14 countries - it has been ranked as the fifth deadliest quake ever.
