Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many former U.S. Presidents died on July 4?

Answer: Three

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As he lay dying, John Adams is reported as having said of his former rival, "Thomas Jefferson survives," unaware that Jefferson had died a few hours earlier. James Monroe, the last of the presidents considered a Founding Father, died just five years later on July 4, 1831.
2. How many former U.S. presidents were alive during the inauguration of John Quincy Adams?

Answer: Four

J.Q. Adams was the sixth U.S. President (1825-1829). In order of presidencies, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe were all alive at the time of J.Q.'s inauguration. Three, of course, died on July 4. Adams and Jefferson in 1826 and Monroe in 1831. Madison didn't quite make it to Independence Day of 1836, he died on June 28 of that year.

George Washington died on December 14, 1799.
3. The chances of rolling a five in one roll on a standard die are one in __.

Answer: Six

No matter how many times you roll a die, you have a one in six chance of rolling a five in any individual roll. For odds on consecutive rolls, there is a formula: "The general formula for rolling at least one six in "n" rolls is
1 - (5/6)^n," according to Doctor TWE, [of] The Math Forum, http://mathforum.org/dr.math/
4. In this Disney film from 2000, starring Glenn Close as Cruella De Vil, there are "One Hundred and __ Dalmatians".

Answer: Two

Yep, it's "102 Dalmatians". This was sequel to the live-action 1996 remake of the 1961 classic animated film, "One Hundred and One Dalmatians." In this film, Cruella (now "Ella") has spent three years in jail and been "cured" by Dr. Pavlov. Unfortunately the "cure" wears off (thanks to the chiming of Big Ben), and Ella reverts to her evil ways.

In the end, naturally, all things work out for the good. The spelling of the villain's last name in 1961 was "DeVille," but was changed for this remake.
5. This song, from a Broadway Musical which won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, originally starred Raul Julia on Broadway.

Answer: "Nine"

"Nine," the musical is based on Frederico Fellini's "semi-autobiographical" film "8 1/2," which focuses on the mid-life crisis of fellow director, Guido Contini. The show opened in 1982 and ran for 729 performances. The revival in 2003 ran for 283 performance and garnered two more Tony Awards. "One" is the great finale from "A Chorus Line". "76 Trombones" is from "The Music Man", which won five Tony Awards in 1957 and one in 1958, but not for Best Musical, and the star was, of course, the inimitable Robert Preston.
6. According the the King James version of The Holy Bible, "Thou Shalt Not Kill" is commandment number ___.

Answer: Six

The first commandment in this case is, "Thou shalt have none other gods before me". The third is "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." and the seventh is "Neither shalt thou commit adultery".
7. Ruled by the sun, Leo is fiercely independent and positive. Leo is the _____ sign of the zodiac.

Answer: Fifth

Leo, whose motto is "I will," is the fifth house. The first house is Aries, ruled by the planet Mars, and its motto is "I am." The fourth house is Cancer. Ruled by the moon, Cancer's motto is "I feel." (The mottoes were supplied by Olivia at astrologybyolivia.com) There is, of course, no fifteenth house.
8. According to The Fifth Dimension, "When the moon is in the _____ house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars, then Peace will guide the planets, and love will steer the stars."

Answer: Seventh

This is from the song "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in," a killer tune from the quintessential Hippie musical, "Hair." I could write 50 quizzes on this show alone. The original cast album won a Grammy in 1968, but a Tony would not come until "Best Revival of a Musical" in 2009.

Libra, "the scales" is the seventh house of the zodiac. Its ruling planet is Venus, and its motto is, naturally, "I balance." The first house is Aries, ruled by the planet Mars, and its motto is "I am." The sixth house is Virgo, traditionally ruled by the planet Mercury and its motto is "I analyze."

9. Quite a few sports fans will know that the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA), which includes the Oklahoma Sooners, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and Kansas Jayhawks, changed its name in 1964 to "The Big ___."

Answer: Eight

The Big Eight also included: Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, and Oklahoma State. In 1996, Texas got into the act, adding four teams to the roster: Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M, and the conference became The Big Twelve.

The Big Ten, ironically, also has 12 members: Michigan, Illinois, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Purdue, Penn State, and Nebraska.

Great schools and teams, all. I'm a huge football fan, but I'm an SEC guy.
10. In this multiple Tony Award-winning musical, how many "short days" did Elphaba and Galinda spend sight-seeing in this re-imagining of a classic tale by L. Frank Baum?

Answer: One

Here is the "one." "One Short Day," is a great song from "Wicked," the story of the witches from Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Elphaba and Galinda would go on to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North in "Wicked." In 2004 the musical only won 3 Tony Awards including Best Actress (Idina Menzel as Elphaba).

It was nominated for Best Musical, but did not win -- that award went to "Avenue Q." If you have not seen "Wicked," JUST DO IT!
