Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When most people think of Sydney, they think of Sydney Harbour. What is Sydney Harbour's other name?

Answer: Port Jackson

Port Hacking is further south, Sydney Cove is a part of Port Jackson, and Port Denison doesn't exist...
2. What is the modern name for the location where Sydney was first started?

Answer: Circular Quay

Yes, I know the song goes "Bound for Botany Bay", but Sydney was founded on Circular Quay - in the middle of the modern-day CBD.
3. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a distinctive object on Sydney's skyline. What is unique about this bridge?

Answer: It is the widest long-span bridge in the world

With eight traffic lanes, two train lines and a pedestrian path, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the widest long-span bridge in the world.

It is not the longest steel-arch bridge in the world, e.g. the Bayonne Bridge between New York and New Jersey is 1,654 ft long, vs. 1,650 ft for the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
4. What is the name of the road that crosses the bridge?

Answer: Bradfield Highway

Most people think it's the Cahill Expressway - in fact, the Cahill Expressway merely approaches the Bridge. It's the Bradfield Highway which crosses it.
5. The Sydney Opera House is a large white building quite prominent in aerial photos. What is the name of the point on which it is built?

Answer: Bennelong Point

Dawes Point is the next one to the west, Mrs Maquarie's Chair is the next one to the east, and there is no Cook Point
6. What does the Sydney Opera House look like?

Answer: The sails of ships

Jorn Utzon (1918-2008), the man who designed it, never actually saw it completed with his own eyes. Construction commenced in 1959, and he left Australia in 1966 after conflicts with the NSW government; and never returned. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973.
7. Which of the following is NOT an island (or former island) in Sydney Harbour?

Answer: Norfolk Island

Norfolk Island is an Australian territory located in open ocean.
8. In the 19th century, a fort was built in Sydney Harbour to defend it from attacks by warships - an attack which never came. What was the name of the fort?

Answer: Fort Denison

Thanks to nicko222 who pointed out my error in this question - I thought the fort was built in WWII.
9. Which of these rivers does NOT pass through Sydney and its environs?

Answer: Williams River

The Williams river actually passes through Raymond Terrace.
10. Name these beaches in order from north to south: Coogee Beach, Bondi Beach, Maroubra Beach, Clovelly Beach

Answer: Bondi, Clovelly, Coogee, Maroubra

Lovely beaches if you ask me...
