The attack started on the night of the 9th and continued during the next day.

Nazi Stormtroopers terrorized Jewish men, women and children.
4. The violence and rage was started by an assassination by a 17 year old Jewish man who walked into the German Embassy in Paris and shot staff member in retaliation for the inhuman treatment his father and family had received from the Nazis. Who was the man?

Answer: Herschel Grynszpan

This assassination gave the Nazis what they thought was a reason to start a brutal and destructive pogrom against the Jews. Grynszpan's parents were Poles who had lived in Germany since about 1910. The Nazis had rounded up all Polish Jews and tried to deport them to Poland, but the Polish government (who was also anti-Semitic) refused to accept them, and so these Jews were forced to live in a kind of 'no-man's land' on the German-Polish border, without adequate food, water or medical attention.

Answer: 91

91 people were murdered, 7,500 Jewish businesses were destroyed, 267 synogogues burned, and probably hundreds of people injured.
8. What was the attack of Kristallnacht for?

Answer: To warn the Jews that their fate was coming

Ever since the Nazis came to power in 1933 they had persecuted the Jews. Their initial policy was to bully the German Jews into emigrating. In view of the economic conditions of the 1930s it was not easy for them to find other countries willing to take them in. Those who emigrated nearly always needed a *job* (or finiancial guarantees) as well as a residence permit in the country they went to.

This was particularly hard for older Jews.
9. What happened after Kristallnacht, when massive insurance claims came in?

Answer: Jews were billed for the damage done

Hermann Goering made this speech about the billing of Kristallnacht: "I shall close the meeting with these words," Goring stated, "German Jewry shall, as punishment for their abominable crimes, etcetera, have to make a contribution of one billion marks. That will work. The swine won't commit another murder. Incidentally, I would like to say that I would not like to be a Jew in Germany."
10. How much money were the Jewish people fined for Kristallnacht?

Answer: 1 billion marks

In addition to this fine, everyone leaving Germany - whether Jewish or not - had to pay a special tax (amounting to 20% of their assets) called the 'Reichsfluchtsteuer' - the 'tax for fleeing the Reich'.
