Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Decorative metal discs called 'tsuba' can be found attached to what martial item related to the Japanese samurai knights?

Answer: Swords

Beautifully crafted tsuba were a must for any samurai warrior with wealth. The tsuba served as a handguard on samurai swords, to be found between the blade and the tang (the part of the sword that inserts into the handle).
2. Extremely colorful and decorative Buddhist paintings called 'thangka' are a part of the art tradition of what Asian region?

Answer: Tibet

Thangka paintings are part of the sacred artistic repertoire of Tibetan Buddhist monks. Typically painted on scrolls, they normally depict the Buddha in meditation, often surrounded by dozens (or hundreds) of other Buddha figures. The paintings are framed in mandalas, which are disc-shape figures that are supposed to represent the universe.
3. In Japanese sculpture and painting could occasionally be found figures called 'tenbu', figures of gods drawn from the Hindu tradition.

Answer: True

Though Hinduism never developed as a regular faith in Japan, gods were recruited from the Hindu pantheon (via Buddhist influence) as guardian figures in Japanese art. Thus, one may surprisingly see appearances from Shiva and Vishnu, for example, in ancient Japanese art.
4. The 'trimurti', or 'threefold form', is a statue or other artwork that depicts the three chief gods of the Hindu pantheon. Which of these is not one of the three gods found in the 'trimurti'?

Answer: Indra

In the Hindu religion, some people see all gods as aspects of each other. In the case of the 'trimurti', Brahma 'the creator', Vishnu 'the preserver' and Shiva 'the destroyer' are combined into one figure.
5. In Chinese art, this 'T' animal is considered a symbol of the moon. To which creature am I referring?

Answer: Toad

There is a tale in Chinese myth about a three-legged toad that existed on the moon. Eclipses are explained by this toad 'swallowing' the moon. The tiger is considered to be a symbol of courage and military strength, while the tortoise is a symbol of long life.
6. What is the 'T' term referring to the beautifully crafted entrance gates to Japanese Shinto shrines?

Answer: Torii

A torii gate has a wonderfully simple design, consisting of two columns that hold up a single rafter whose ends extend beyond the column. They can be found throughout Japan, coming in various shapes, colors and sizes.
7. Depicted occasionally in art, the 'Tirthankaras' were ancient saints associated with of the following religions in Asia?

Answer: Jainism

Typically, figures of the Tirthankaras in Jainist art display jewels in their chests. These jewels symbolize their purity of spirit. Tirthankaras are much like bodhisattvas in that they have achieved enlightenment, but have returned to earth to lead their fellow humans 'across the shore'.
8. The word 'that' is not only a pronoun in the English language, but also the term (prounounced 'tut') for a type of Buddhist stupa to be found in which country of Asia?

Answer: Laos

A that is simply another form of the stupa, a dome-shaped Buddhist shrine, to be found in Laos and northern Thailand. A wonderful example of a that is the 'melon temple', aka That Makmo, to be found in Luang Prabang in Laos. It was built by Queen Visounalat in the early 16th century.
9. You will most likely find the stylized animal masks of Chinese art called 'taotie' on which of these items of the Chinese aesthetic tradition?

Answer: Shang bronzes

The taotie was an often quite frightening looking animal face, complete with horns, fierce snout and prominent eyes. They were engraved on Shang bronzes for aesthetic and protective purposes. The taotie were seen as guardians against evil spirits.
10. These are tightly weaved straw mats that are used on the floors or for beds in Japanese homes. What are they called?

Answer: Tatami

Tatami mats are made of straw, and typically have a celadon green color. Often, room-sizes are measured out in terms of how many tatami they might contain. Thank you for having tried this quiz, I hope you enjoyed it, learned a thing or two, and will be willing to try my other art terms quizzes.
