Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The name of which style of Japanese landscape painting could be translated as 'drop of ink'?

Answer: Haboku

Also translated as 'broken ink' or 'flung ink', it is characterized by only a few rough brush marks on an otherwise empty scroll. The empty areas of the painting suggest a misty atmosphere upon which the subject (usually plants) are juxtaposed.
2. Frequently depicted in Hindu art, he is the monkey general of the epic Ramayana.

Answer: Hanuman

Hanuman was sent by the monkey king Sugriva to assist Rama in freeing Rama's wife Sita. Hanuman's army of monkeys built a bridge across the strait to Sri Lanka where the evil king Ravana held Sita, allowing Rama to cross and defeat his rival.
3. The 'Hor Trai' is which part of a Laotian or Thai Wat (temple)?

Answer: Library

The Hor Trai, or wooden hall, is one of the key rooms of a Buddhist temple complex. It contains the Tripitaka and the various Sutras from which the Buddhist monks must read.
4. The great Korean King Sejong had his advisors develop a native alphabet for the Korean language that could rival or replace the traditional Chinese characters used for centuries in that country. What is this alphabet, now in common use in Korea, called?

Answer: Hangul

The Hangul alphabet is a simple but beautiful alphabet that is now used by all Koreans, though it is still supplemented with Chinese characters.
5. Hakeme is a beautiful Japanese (and Korean) pottery style which is decorated by a creamy slip. What color is this slip?

Answer: White

Sometimes the slip will be of a specific design, while other times its simply an abstract shape or pattern.
6. Here's a simple one. Name the Japanese poetry form that contains 17 syllables.

Answer: Haiku

The greatest Haiku master was Basho who wrote 'Oku-no-hosomichi' (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) among other works in the 17th century. Haiku consists of 3 lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables respectively.
7. Buddhist stupas in Burma (Myanmar) are often crowned with delicate umbrella shaped forms called what?

Answer: Hti

The most spectacular of the Burmese stupas is called Shwedagon and is located in the capital, Yangon. The Swedagon is known to tourists as the 'Great Gold Stupa' because it is covered with gold plating and gold leaf. At the very top of this stupa is crowned the hti which contains numerous diamonds, including a huge one at its upper point. Needless to say, this stupa is heavily guarded!
8. The traditional monastery-like academy used to train young Korean men to warriors and officials for the Silla kings was called...?

Answer: Hwarangdo

The training of these warriors, called Hwarang, included instruction in both Confucian and Buddhist philosophy, martial arts and also literature and painting. Some of the Hwarang became recognized as artists in their own right. Hwarangdo has been recently revived in Korea as a new form of martial arts training...hopefully it will produce some philosophically and aesthetically active young men as well!
9. Both 'Happi' and 'Haori' are shorter styles of what traditional Japanese garment?

Answer: Kimono

Traditionally, happi were worn by Japanese carpenters and firefighters. Haori were (and are) a garment worn originally by upper class men, but now are popular amongst the more general population.
10. Finally, a question that purveyors of Chinese calligraphy will enjoy, a 'heng' is what sort of stroke in Chinese character writing?

Answer: Horizontal

While a horizontal stroke is called a 'heng', a vertical one is called 'shu'. The diagonal strokes are 'pie' (left) and 'na' (right), while a hook is called a 'gou'. A dot is called a 'dian', the rising stroke a 'ti' and a curved stroke is known as a 'zhe'. Well...thank you to the half-dozen or so fans of Asian art who have hung in there through the first group of quizzes, next up will be the combination of letters 'I' and 'J'...please keep an eye out for them!
