Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which 1990 movie does Edward rescue Vivian, only for her to rescue him right back?

Answer: Pretty Woman

On a fateful night, prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) gets into a car with ruthless businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere). After Lewis hires Vivian to be at his "beck and call" for one week, they both find that their priorities in life are changing.

Richard Gere actually composed and performed the piano piece seen in the movie when Vivian goes to the lobby searching for him at night.
2. Which 1994 Quentin Tarantino movie is often credited with reviving John Travolta's acting career?

Answer: Pulp Fiction

Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) is a boxer who has been paid to take a dive by Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). Vincent Vega (Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are retrieving a briefcase that was stolen from Wallace. Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer) and Pumpkin (Tim Roth) have decided to rob the wrong diner on the wrong day, and Wallace's wife Mia (Uma Thurman) is just out for a fun night. All their lives are about to intersect in a violent fashion.

The movie John Travolta made prior to "Pulp Fiction" was "Look Who's Talking Now" ... which is best not talked about really.
3. Andrew Beckett is fired from his job at a conservative law firm after they discover that he has AIDS. He then hires homophobic lawyer Joe Miller to represent him in a lawsuit against the company in which 1993 movie?

Answer: Philadelphia

After the partners of his law firm discover that Andy (Tom Hanks) has AIDS, a brief that Andy has been working on is conveniently 'lost'. Andy rightly assumes that the firm has orchestrated this situation as an excuse to fire him. When Andy decides to sue the firm, he realises that there are few people willing to take on his previous employers, or indeed, to take on a gay client suffering from AIDS. After initially refusing to take the case, Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) finally agrees to help Andy who eventually gets his day in court.

Bruce Springsteen wrote and performed the film's moving theme song "Streets of Philadelphia".
4. Which 2003 movie features a character with a wooden eye that refuses to stay in place?

Answer: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) not only has to come to terms with the fact that his father was a pirate, but he needs to co-operate with one of the most bizarre pirates on the face of the earth to rescue the love of his life Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) from the cursed Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).

The ever gorgeous Johnny Depp and the handsome Orlando Bloom in the same movie - genius!
5. "They're here" is a famous quote from which 1982 movie?

Answer: Poltergeist

Building houses on an old graveyard may have seemed like a good idea to the developers, but this decision turns out to be a disaster for the Freeling family after their home is haunted by malevolent poltergeists. The poltergeists have a connection with the Freeling's youngest daughter Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke) and terrorise the family before abducting Carol Anne through a 'portal' in her bedroom closet.

Heather O'Rourke who played Carol Anne Freeling in "Poltergeist" sadly died from cardiopulmonary arrest and intestinal stenosis aged only 12.
6. In which 1998 movie are a brother and sister transported into a 1950s' black and white sitcom?

Answer: Pleasantville

Twins David (Toby Maguire) and Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) have little in common. When they are transported into the black and white world of the TV series "Pleasantville" their presence begins to affect the previously monotone lives of all its residents. Both David and Jennifer are forced to take a look at how they have been living their lives, and decide whether or not to face their own fears.

"Pleasantville" uses a clever blend of black and white with colour film, and also uses this to reference racism in the 1950s and 1960s in the United States.
7. Keira Knightley stars in which 2005 film set in rural England in the 19th century?

Answer: Pride and Prejudice

When Elizabeth Bennet (Knightley) meets Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), it is definitely not love at first sight. However, as they learn more about each other, their feelings grow and they are able to overcome their initial beliefs and find themselves falling in love.

Jane Austin's novel "Pride and Prejudice" was first published on 28 January 1813 and has since been adapted into numerous film and stage productions.
8. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play extra-ordinary sisters in which 1998 movie?

Answer: Practical Magic

For 200 years the Owens women have been cursed. Any man who falls in love with them faces an untimely death. The young Sally (Bullock) casts a spell to prevent her ever falling in love and thus cursing a man to death. Carefree Gillian (Kidman) ignores the curse, but when her abusive boyfriend Jimmy (Goran Visnjic) dies, the handsome officer Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) enters the sisters' lives and Sally's attempts to avoid love seem doomed.

A television pilot based on the movie "Practical Magic" was produced by Sandra Bullock, but was not picked up.
9. Andie Walsh has a crush on the popular and rich Blane McDonnagh in which 1986 John Hughes movie?

Answer: Pretty in Pink

Duckie (Jon Cryer) has a long time crush on the off-beat Andie (Molly Ringwald). When she catches the eye of "richie" Blane McDonnagh (Andrew McCarthy) it seems that Duckie is never to get the girl of his dreams. However, the difference in Andie and Blane's lifestyles may yet mean that Duckie will get a second chance with Andie.

The blond girl who dances with Duckie at the end of this movie is played by, at the time unknown, Kristy Swanson.
10. Which 1986 movie by Oliver Stone takes a gritty look at the experience of a young soldier in Vietnam?

Answer: Platoon

Naive Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) has no idea exactly what he has signed up for when he volunteers for combat duty in Vietnam. Death becomes a part of life and he faces moral dilemmas and out of control company mates. After an illegal and brutal murder of villagers, things only get darker for Taylor.

"Platoon" is loosely based on Oliver Stone's own tour of duty in Vietnam.
