Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What 1968 film features a group of people trapped in a farmhouse while a group of zombies (called ghouls) attempt to break in and eat them?

Answer: Night of the Living Dead

"Night of the Living Dead" was a black and white film released in 1968. It is part of George A. Romero's "Dead" series. Interestingly, it was released shortly before the advent of the then new MPAA ratings system.
2. What was the 1931 film where a particularly famous vampire, played by Bela Lugosi, tries to drink the blood of unsuspecting Londoners?

Answer: Dracula

Bela Lugosi, of Hungarian origin, had actually played the vampire on Broadway and was chosen to play the role in film. Originally, they were going to try to cast Lon Chaney Sr., but he died before filming. Lugosi is now the classic Dracula. Often, when people think of Dracula, they will think of the Dracula portrayed in this film, even if they have never seen it!
3. Name the 1978 film where a group of people get trapped in a shopping mall and once again zombies try to eat them.

Answer: Dawn of the Dead

This was Part 2 of George Romero's "Dead" series. This film is consistently regarded as the best of the "Dead" series by critics and was the most successful of the "Dead" films. The film was a notable satire on the consumerism of society which was why it was set at a mall.
4. In what 1987 film does a man in the Midwest gets entangled with a roaming band of vampires?

Answer: Near Dark

This film, the directorial debut of Kathryn Bigelow, was released in 1987 and was notable for several reasons including Lance Henrikson. The film performed poorly at the box office, but received favorable reviews and has since garnered a cult following.
5. What 1980 Fulci classic is notable for a shark scene and an eye scene? It follows the characters' mission to try to stop a zombie infestation.

Answer: Zombi 2

Lucio Fulci, a noted Italian horror movie director, is known for his gore and non-traditional plots. This film is generally considered Fulci's most famous work. The title, "Zombie 2", by the way, is a reference to "Night of the Living Dead's" foreign title: "Zombie". Strangely, however, this film has nothing to do with that film other than the fact that both have zombies, of course.
6. Name the 1998 film where we see the title character, from the Marvel comics, battling vampires who feed on unsuspecting humans.

Answer: Blade

"Blade" was a box office hit in 1998. It centered on the title character of Blade who was half human, half vampire, known among vampires as the Daywalker. "The Dark Knight" is actually not even Marvel, it is DC, by the way, and Daywalker is what they call Blade in the films; it is not the name of him or the film. "Doctor Strange" did not hunt vampires, though did face mystical threats and did not receive a film until 2016.
7. What 2004 spoof of zombie films features a British drunk battles zombies?

Answer: Shaun of the Dead

"Shaun of the Dead" was a solid success and is reviewed as generally positive by the critics. "Fido" and "Return of the Living Dead" are zombie films, but they were not released in 2004. "Zombie" is the international title of "Night of the Living Dead" and also an alternate title for "Zombi 2".
8. Name the 1958 Hammer classic, one of the first hits of their classic monster films, that was a portrayal of the classic Dracula story.

Answer: Horror of Dracula

In the 1950s, Hammer Studios became an important studio for their remakes of classic Universal monsters including "The Mummy", "Frankenstein", and "Dracula". Hammer films of the 1950s and 1960s especially tended to be characterized by blood, color, and more sexual suggestion and the like. This film was their second major hit after the "Curse of Frankenstein", which was released in 1957.
9. What is the name of a 1985 spoof of zombie films where the characters accidentally trigger a zombie invasion?

Answer: Return of the Living Dead

This film was the directorial debut of Dan O'Bannon who was the principal screenwriter of the film "Alien" (1979) and who was a friend to John Carpenter. The film was a moderate box office success in 1985 and has garnered a sort of cult status since. The film is notable for the "braaaainnnns!" line.
10. In which 2000 film is it revealed that Dracula is actually Judas, which is why he hates the Cross so much?

Answer: Dracula 2000

The film was made several million dollars in profit and spawned two direct-to-video sequels, but was generally considered a commercial and critical failure. The film has, however, gained cult status since. "End of Days" and "Prince of Darkness" are actually not zombie or vampire movies and "Fright Night" was released in 1985, not 2000.
