The theme for the song came as Frey and Henley were eating at a restaurant. They saw a beautiful woman with a fat wealthy man. Knowing that she was "gold digging", Frey said, "Look, she can't even hide her Lyin Eyes". Thus, the song was born.

Bob and his fellow band members all had long hair, and all the truckers were using, "the same old cliches/ is that a woman or a man". Just like the later lyrics in the song.
