Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the two members of Dollar?

Answer: David Van Day and Thereza Bazar

David Van Day was born in Brighton, England on 28th November 1956. Thereza Bazar is a British-Canadian, born in Toronto on 23rd May 1957. Both were romantically linked when Dollar was formed, however, they went their separate ways in 1981, after being engaged, while rumours of marriage were squashed.
2. Which music group act were the two members previously a part of?

Answer: Guys n' Dolls

Guys n' Dolls was a six member group that formed in 1974, and had two UK Top Ten hits, which were "There's A Whole Lot Of Loving" and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". After Van Day and Bazar left, the group carried on well into the mid-80s. The entire original group reunited for a Dutch TV show in March 2008.
3. What was the name of Dollar's first hit single in 1978?

Answer: Shooting Star

"Shooting Star" reached No.14 in the UK singles chart. Their debut album was "Shooting Stars". Their third single, "Love's Gotta Hold On Me", in 1979 did even better with a peak of No. 4 in the same charts. "Mirror Mirror" was a hit later, in 1981.
4. Which early Dollar hit was the first to reach the Top Ten in the UK Singles Chart?

Answer: Love's Gotta Hold On Me

"Love's Gotta Hold On Me" was a hit in 1979. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was a Beatles cover by Dollar. "Who Were You With In The Moonlight?" was their second single in 1979, which did as well as "Shooting Star", reaching No.14 in the UK Singles Chart.
5. In 1981, who did Dollar collaborate with to produce "The Dollar Album" yielding one of their biggest hits, "Mirror Mirror (Mon Amor)"?

Answer: Trevor Horn

Trever Horn was one of the brains (and singer) behind The Buggles' big hit "Video Killed the Radio Star". Between 1981-82, Horn helped create what was to become Dollar at their peak, with the singles "Mirror Mirror" and "Give Me Back My Heart", which both became Top Ten hits in the UK. Horn moved on to become a very successful music producer.

Stock Aitken & Waterman was a hugely successful record label in the 80s, but didn't form until 1984.

Phil Spector was a revolutionary music producer for the likes of The Righteous Brothers, John Lennon & The Ramones. He never worked with Dollar.

Arif Mardin was a Turkish-American music producer who only collaborated with Thereza Bazar, not Dollar.
6. In the "Mirror, Mirror" music video, what are Dollar displayed as in the beginning?

Answer: Toy dolls coming to life

The most memorable part of the music video were the two stars crashing through the toy shop windows as they are no longer dolls, and grow in size. It is rumoured that Bazar badly cut her leg while crashing through the window despite being made of sugar glass.
7. By 1983, Dollar had split up, their latest single was never released in the UK, and the two embarked on solo music careers. What was the name of the female member's only solo album in 1985 and the male member's first solo single in 1983?

Answer: The Big Kiss & Young Americans Talking

Thereza Bazar co-wrote in the album "The Big Kiss", produced by Arif Mardin in 1985. Bazar claims it flopped despite media attention, because the release of the album was delayed, and because it was advertised much too early.

David Van Day released the single "Young Americans Talking" in 1983. It failed to reach the Top 40. The song was written and produced by the people behind UK pop group Bucks Fizz.

The other songs mentioned were other tracks on "The Big Kiss", and future singles by David Van Day.
8. What was Dollar's last major hit, reaching No. 7 in the UK Singles Chart in 1988?

Answer: Oh L'amour

"Oh L'amour" was originally sung by Erasure in 1986, and unlike Dollar's version, it bombed in the charts, however it became a club hit. Personally, this was my favourite Dollar song and version of this song. For me it worked better with the mix of female and male vocals, and the synth instruments used in it.

The other three songs were released in Dollar's second stint, with "It's Nature's Way", being the last single they have made to date in 1988.
9. In the 1990's after a more pronounced split-up in 1988, which member joined which famous group after their solo career flopped?

Answer: Male Member of Dollar & Bucks Fizz

David Van Day also teamed up with other female singers for Dollar tours in the 90s. He sang with Bucks Fizz from 1996-1997, but matters became more confused when he and original Bucks Fizz member Mike Nolan formed a new Bucks Fizz but renamed it "Bucks Fizz starring Mike Nolan".

When Nolan split up with Van Day, Van Day carried on singing under "Bucks Fizz" with no original members involved, and this led to a case at the High Court, but in the end Van Day never got charged, and matters were resolved in 2002 as Van Day changed his band name to "David Van Day's Bucks Fizz Show". Phew!
10. Dollar reunited again in 2002, touring with other acts from the 1980s. In 2003, the duo took part in the TV reality show "Reborn in the USA", a show whose aim was to resurrect pop star careers in the USA, as well as living together. In the most explosive part of the show, which other famous 1980s act called the male member of Dollar a "nasty piece of work"?

Answer: Sonia

In the competition, Dollar were the first eliminated from the show, by order of phone votes. Sonia's outburst was sourced from what was displayed on the Dollar website, which she saw as derogatory to herself.

Dollar have also appeared together in the odd nostalgic music TV chart shows such as "Top Ten Duets" on Channel 4, in 2001.

This was not the last time any half of Dollar featured in a TV reality show. Dollar appeared in 2009, on a another programme to ressurect their pop careers through the means of plastic surgery in "Pop Goes The Band" on LivingTV.

David Van Day also appeared in "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" which resulted in him releasing a song alongside 80s childhood icon Timmy Mallett. Although very controversial on the show, i thought Van Day was great in entertainment value, whether it was an act or not!
