Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where have these lyrics come from: "Think it's time we stop, children What's that sound Everybody look what's going down"?

Answer: Buffalo Springfield - "For What It's Worth"

This 1967 folk rock gem was written by Stephen Stills and recorded by Buffalo Springfield, the group that also introduced Neil Young to the world. The song title does not appear anywhere in the lyrics. According to Stills, he brought the untitled demo to the record label and said "I have a song here, for what it's worth, if you want it," and that somehow ended up as the name.
2. Who came up with this delightful lyric: "She's a PhD in 'I told you so' You've a knighthood in 'I'm not listening'"?

Answer: The Beautiful South - "Don't Marry Her"

This is one of those notorious pop songs with a swear word in the chorus (and sung so casually as well)! The censored version became a UK hit for the Hull based pop-rock group reaching number eight in the charts, and remains popular due to Paul Heaton's cynical lyrics and vocalist Jacqui Abbot's convincing delivery.
3. Do you know who this one is: "Marconi plays the mamba Listen to the radio Don't you remember"?

Answer: Starship - "We Built This City"

This song was cited as the "#1 Worst Song Ever" by "Blender" magazine. If you ask me, that sort of achievement really requires something special. Enough said.
4. Who is this: "Hide it in a hiding place where no-one ever goes Put it in your pantry with your cupcakes"?

Answer: Simon & Garfunkel - "Mrs. Robinson"

This was a number one single by the duo, written by Paul Simon. It was originally about Mrs Roosevelt until Mike Nichols, director of the film "The Graduate," asked if he could re-name it after one of the characters called Mrs Robinson so the song could be included in the soundtrack.
5. How about this one: "Thunder only happens when it's raining. Players only love you when they're playing."

Answer: Fleetwood Mac - "Dreams"

From "Rumours," this Stevie Nicks number helped propel the album to classic status; it has sold over 40 million copies. Supposedly, the track was written in ten minutes.
6. Who is this: "When you've made your mind up forever to be mine I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind"?

Answer: Donovan - "Sunshine Superman"

Donovan Leitch was originally dismissed as a Scottish Bob Dylan, but soon developed his own unique style of psychedelic folk with the occasional Indian raga thrown in. And this song features Jimmy Page on guitar!
7. Where are these lyrics from: "I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word"?

Answer: Coldplay - "Viva La Vida"

Coldplay's album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" reached number number one in 36 countries. This track also became worldwide hit, complete with a distinct orchestrated riff, anthem-like chorus and plagiarism allegations from Joe Satriani.
8. Who do these lyrics belong to: "You can't start a fire You can't start a fire without a spark This gun's for hire"?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen - "Dancing In The Dark"

This one is from his 1984 album "Born In The USA," the peak of his commercial success, and it was the last song written for it.
9. What song is this: "Helter skelter in a summer swelter The birds flew off with a fallout shelter Eight miles high and falling fast"?

Answer: Don McLean - "American Pie"

Don McLean is dismissed by many as a one-hit-wonder; those who remember 'Vincent' might stretch to calling him a two-hit-wonder. But American Pie's legacy speaks for itself. A lyrical masterpiece, it spoke of the death of Buddy Holly whilst giving an autobiographical account of McLean's life at the time.

It also references, the Beatles, the Byrds, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Elvis and James Dean, all in the space of eight minutes.
10. Which song is this lyric from: "Now I lay me down to sleep Pray the lord my soul to keep If I die before I wake Pray the lord my soul to take"?

Answer: Metallica - "Enter Sandman"

This is the prayer heard from the little boy midway through the song. By the time they got to the "Black Album", thrash metal kings Metallica had watered down everything thrash about their sound, but the album sold 15 million in the process. As the opening track on the album, "Enter Sandman" plays a big part in the band's selling out, whether you think this is a good or bad thing.
