Question 1 of 10
1. Jimmy Rodgers sang the song that is #10 on the ISLA Top 10 Tribute Song list. The song chronicles a relationship from the time the songwriter was "a young man and never been kissed" to the twilight of his life when he is "old and ready to go". The song celebrates the thing that made his courtship and marriage so profoundly satisfying. What is it that makes the songwriter proclaim, "had a lot of kids, a lot of trouble and pain, but then, whoops oh lordy, well I'd do it all again"? (The phrase is also the title of the song.) Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The composer and singer of #9 on the ISLA Top 10 tribute songs achieved instant stardom in 1957 with his plea to an older teenage girl. The song includes the following lines:

"You and I will be as free
As the birds up in the trees."

To whom is the song addressed? (The name is also the title of the song.)
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. In our #8 song, "You Send Me", Sam Cooke not only paid eloquent homage to his girl in that satin voice of his, but he also mentioned a word that once worked a special sort of magic on many women. Sam croons:

"At first I though it was infatuation
"But, ooh, it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting..."

What is it that Sam Cooke finds himself wanting to do?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. A consummate musician performed Number 7 on the ISLA list of tribute songs. In 1950 Nat King Cole described a woman "so like the lady with the mystic smile". He plaintively asks , "Are you warm are you real _________ or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?" Which name belongs in the blank? (It is also the name of this song.) Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The #6 place on the ISLA tribute song lists belongs to a 1962 Johnny Mathis song. Johnny paid homage to his new love by saying:

"Look at you, look at you.
So warm, so sweet so shy.
Look at you, oh look at you
I can't believe that I'm such a lucky guy."

What was the name of the girl to whom Johnny sang this song? (The name of the girl is also the name of the song.)
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. An Elvis Presley recording has nabbed 5th place on the ISLA all time tribute song list. In 1957, Elvis Presley recorded a song that accurately and expressively conveyed the effects of the mouth-drying hormonal surge that a male adolescent may experience on actual physical contact with the opposite sex. The young King asks:

"A well I bless my soul
What's wrong with me?
I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree
My friends say I'm actin' wild as a bug
I'm in love
I'm ________."

What three words belong in the blank, which are also the title of the song?

Answer: (Three words)
Question 7 of 10
7. Were you a well-groomed teenage boy in the early 1960s, the kind given to wearing pullover sweaters with turtleneck t-shirts underneath and neatly pressed slacks? Then ISLA's #4 top tribute song, "The Way You Look Tonight", was your type of long song. Performed in three-part harmony by the Lettermen in a 1961 release, "The Way You Look Tonight" describes the laugh that "wrinkles her nose". The object of desire is described as being lovely, with a warm smile. What variety of physical contact is described in the song? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The Insipid Song Lovers Association is proud to award the third position in its all time list of tribute songs to a courageous song that Lloyd Price performed in 1959. Lloyd Price does not tell us whether the love of his life had a winsome or mysterious smile, whether her appearance was stunning, whether she kissed like a volcano, whether her motion was poetic or even whether she had pretty blues, wore blue jeans or lived next door. Eschewing the superficial, with what did Lloyd Price say his girl walked, talked, smiled, charmed and loved? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. The second place on ISLA's top tributes list goes to a song that Neil Sedaka wrote and Jimmy Clanton performed. In ISLA's opinion, this tune is the consummate leader in one of the most important genres of the pre-Beatle rock era: the girl-next-door song. Keywords such as "seventeen", "next door" or "ponytail" often signal inclusion in this subcategory. Use of several rock and roll clichés is also mandatory. In this song our "Mona Lisa with a ponytail" is a "walking talking work of art". The songwriter informs us, "she's the girl who stole my heart". What important article of clothing does this "teenage goddess from above" wear? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. When it came to picking ISLA's number one tribute song, we were "as helpless as a kitten up a tree." Every time we play the record "a thousand violins begin to play" and our vision hazes over. Yes, I'm "leading you on" a bit, but I'll bet "its just what you want me to do". So, unless you're "hopelessly lost", select the name of the winning song. Hint

What is it that makes the songwriter proclaim, "had a lot of kids, a lot of trouble and pain, but then, whoops oh lordy, well I'd do it all again"? (The phrase is also the title of the song.)

Answer: Kisses Sweeter Than Wine

"Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" is suitable for a husband to sing to his wife on their 50th wedding anniversary. I am unaware of any other Top 40 love song that treasures an enduring marriage while celebrating hard work and child rearing. Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore wrote "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine." The two men were prolific songwriters and capable of writing novelty songs and dance songs in addition to love songs. ISLA feels that songwriters can benefit from applying T. S. Elliot's famous quote regarding poets, to their songwriting. (Elliot quipped, "Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal.").

The Insipid Song Lovers Association is appreciative of Peretti's and Creatore's willingness to build on the achievements of others. Peretti and Creatore wrote "Twisting the Night Away" for Sam Cooke, demonstrating their willingness to benefit from the "Twist" craze. Working with David Weiss, Peretti and Creatore composed "Can't Help Falling in Love" for Elvis Presly and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" for the Tokens. "Can't Help Falling in Love" begins with a delightful combination of two clichés : "Wise men say, 'only fools rush in.'" "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was adapted from an African folk tune.
2. The composer and singer of #9 on the ISLA Top 10 tribute songs achieved instant stardom in 1957 with his plea to an older teenage girl. The song includes the following lines: "You and I will be as free As the birds up in the trees." To whom is the song addressed? (The name is also the title of the song.)

Answer: Diana

At age 15, Paul Anka wrote "Diana" to a former babysitter. In an interview given to CBS radio in 1957, the real Diana, Diana Ayoub, indicated that she was two years older than Paul (rather than the four or five years often reported). She also maintained that there was no romantic involvement between the two.
3. In our #8 song, "You Send Me", Sam Cooke not only paid eloquent homage to his girl in that satin voice of his, but he also mentioned a word that once worked a special sort of magic on many women. Sam croons: "At first I though it was infatuation "But, ooh, it's lasted so long Now I find myself wanting..." What is it that Sam Cooke finds himself wanting to do?

Answer: To marry her and take her home

Ah yes. This was a wonderful song to whisper into your girl's ear as you slow-danced... until you reached the dreaded phrase "to marry you and take you home". If the song did not contain this implicit proposal, this smooth-as-silk lyrical masterpiece would have a higher place on the all time list.
(It is also the name of this song.)

Answer: Mona Lisa

Nat King Cole was a prodigiously talented musician. He first achieved success, not as a singer, but as a Jazz pianist in the 1940's. In this author's opinion, his phrasing in the 1950 song "Mona Lisa" compares favorably with any of Frank Sinatra's recorded performances. Ray Evans penned the song "Mona Lisa" and also wrote "Que Sera Sera", which was recorded by Doris Day.
5. The #6 place on the ISLA tribute song lists belongs to a 1962 Johnny Mathis song. Johnny paid homage to his new love by saying: "Look at you, look at you. So warm, so sweet so shy. Look at you, oh look at you I can't believe that I'm such a lucky guy." What was the name of the girl to whom Johnny sang this song? (The name of the girl is also the name of the song.)

Answer: Gina

A quintessential slow dance song, Gina was a flawless "whisper-in-her-ear-while-you-slow-dance" song. In 1958, a "Greatest Hits" album of Johnny Mathis' songs was released that was apparently the first such album of its kind. The 490 continuous weeks that this album remained on Billboard's top albums charts is duly recorded in the Guinness book of records.
The young King asks: "A well I bless my soul What's wrong with me? I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree My friends say I'm actin' wild as a bug I'm in love I'm ________." What three words belong in the blank, which are also the title of the song?

Answer: All Shook Up

In 1957, "All Shook Up" spent 30 weeks on Billboard's top 100 chart and reached #1. In 1957, eight Presley songs reached the Billboard top 20; five songs reached #1!

Answer: None

The singing of the Lettermen's tenor, Chuck Blasko, at times presaged that of Brian Wilson or Frankie Valli. Some claim that actual teenagers did not listen to the Lettermen in the 60s, but that the teenager's parents bought the records. I can testify to that not being the case in at least one instance. (I also wore the aforementioned sweaters and turtlenecks in junior high school.)

Answer: Personality

Adolescents in the 1950s and early 1960s often recognized personality as an important virtue in the opposite sex, only if there were no other recognizable positive qualities. In her song "At Seventeen", Janis Ian lamented:

To those of us who know the pain

Of valentines that never came,

And those whose names were never called

When choosing sides for basketball.

It was long ago and far away

The world was younger than today

And dreams were all they gave for free

To ugly duckling girls like me.

Because of the sad truth contained in the verses of Janis Ian, ISLA is proud to honor Lloyd Price's "(You've Got) Personality."

Answer: Blue Jeans

"Venus in Blue Jeans" epitomized the ideal girl for many. Such girls were "perky" and always smiling. They often skipped rather than walked. Their fathers wore a coat and tie while eating dinner and you called him "sir" when you picked her up for a date.

Unfortunately, these winsome lasses always seemed to be dying in train accidents, running off with the leader of the pack or simply breaking your heart.

Answer: Misty

Misty is the perfect love song for a variety of reasons. Misty centers on the feelings of the songwriter. This has a number of advantages. There is no name to distract you. If your "girl" is Barbara but the song is "Donna", it makes it a little harder identify the song with your girl. Second, nothing is said about the object of the songwriter's affections. If the songwriter waxes eloquent about characteristics not shared by your lady love it, again, makes it difficult to apply the song. Misty is a universal love song because it says nothing at all about the object of the songwriters desire and everything about his emotional state of mind.
